Review: ICEDcube GC Case From Team Xecuter

Team Xecuter are renowned for their famous Xecuter series of Xbox chips, however it came as a pleasant surprise to hear of their intent to diversify into the GC case mod market and become the first company to successfuly manufacture a WHOLE GC case to accommodate full size DVD-R discs. At times it seemed as if Team Xecuter were trying to tease us all with the long lead time, but I can happily say that they put their time to good use and as per usual have come up with a product that ranks incredibly high on the criterion of quality.

Contents Of ICEDCube Package

- 1 Upper case part
- 1 Lower case part
- 1 Back case part
- 1 Virgin Jewel
- A set of ICEDcube stickers, consisting of 1 Jewel sticker, 2 rectangular stickers (small and big), 1 open lid warning sticker

The above covers everything you will get should you purchase the ICEDcube kit for your GC. As for packaging, the product comes professionaly packaged in a standard cardboard box with an inscription, indicating the colour of your case. Upon opening the box, you will see your ICEDcube is fully protected from shipping damages via the use of bubble wrap.

Now for the good stuff, the first thing that caught my eye was the distinct high quality of the plastic used to create this case. With all due respect, I know it's just plastic and you're thinking how on Earth can one piece be better than another but it truly is very high quality and will even leave a few other case manufacturers giving credit to Team Xecuter as it certainly is due here. The two tone plastic build is simply robust and once again just screams quality out at you.

Here is a focus on the quality of the case, as you can see it looks very solid.

So you're in awe of the look and feel of this case, but next comes the fitting of it, an elemet which has let down competing cases and proved to be a real nuisance. This is another area the ICEDcube certainly does not disappoint in, the fit is true and clean there is no need at all to cut or flex the product in order to get it to function properly. The assembly of this case was not only frustration free due to the parts being perfectly tuned for the GC architecture, but the whole process was a joy to undertake which for me, is a first when it comes to any sort of D.I.Y. When assembling this case, there will not be any late night Frankenstein scenes of panic, nor will you be likely to utter endless expletives under your breath thanks to the fact that this is one greatly designed case.

Here is one I made earlier...

It wouldn't be like Team Xecuter just to leave it at this though, they have added a couple of unique touches to these cases that truly make this case stand head and shoulders above the rest, which I will explain in the following paragraphs. First of all they have managed to incorporate room for the LPT flasher at the back of the case so that should you wish to use this method of flashing, there is absolutely no need to go dis-assemble the case instead you can just flash with from the LPT with the utmost in convienance. I used a Viper GC and the fit was as close to perfect as you are likely to get, the fitting of the module was crisp and the 2 screws ensure that it is secure. You will also notice that Team Xecuter have made space for both the analog and digital ouputs as some GC's only have analog, but the majority have both options, they also provide more high quality stickers to cover up spaces that you do not wish to use!

Related Pics: AV Stickers and Viper Module.

Next up is the top of the case, there is no point in having this really cool looking and fitting case if it can not fulfill it's purpose...well guess what this case fulfils its purpose and goes the extra mile. Full sized DVD-R will fit perfectly, the offset added by Team Xecuter in the front of the case is pure class - this not only looks like a great futuristic design but it will allow you to comfortably place and take out your discs. Previous lids have gone for the classic flat shape, which has left people annoyed when it comes to taking out your discs, but we have seen for ourselves that with this case there will be no such annoyance.

Don't try opening the case while the laser is in use, however we have made an exception for the purpose of this review.

Other nice touches which truly show how Xecuter have really done their homework for this product are the smooth lid motion and the warning sticker on the lid that reminds you that the GC has a potentially damaging laser and not to open the lid whilst the laser is in action. Another quality touch is the preservation of the led lighting visibility, thanks to the translucent design. Sure, these may seem like little things but people say it's the little things that count and this design certainly has lots of them which will leave you more than satisifed.

Postitives

+ High quality plastic
+ Fair price, considering you get a whole GC case
+ Futuristic design
+ LPT flasher design integration
+ Wealth of different colours available
+ Cool stickers to place as you wish

Negatives

- err...hmm...oooh I know being the super safety technician I am, I don't like that lid warning sticker so I'm going to take it off!
- Too many positives!

Well what can I say, Team Xecuter's risk to diversify into the GC case market has paid off big time. Not only have they produced a case of solid quality but it also adds lots of carefully thought out touches which will leave you feeling that your money was well spent, you may never have to dig into your wallet again should another GC case be around the corner. This case deserves such a kick ass review as it it's as close to perfection as you will get for a GC case, it would take a very brave or should that be foolish modder to say otherwise.

Screw issues?

Were you able to screw the lid all of the way down and then remove the screws to take the top half back off? It's seems to be a common issue with the transparent blue Xecuter cases, but was wondering if this flaw was in the black ones too?

Hi guys, I ordered the transparent green icedcube case from divineo and a gamebit.

The good:

- Like everyone says: the quality of the plastic is truly excellent!!!
- Great design! Very stylish.
- Perfect accessibility of full-sized discs!

The bad:
I broke TWO (!) of the normal screws' heads off inside the cube while certainly applying adequate force. I mean the plastic's just too damn hard! But who cares, everything is still tight as hell.

The ugly:
I ordered a gamebit from the "exclusive distributor", right? So I foolishly expected it to work with their cases...
Guess what: The four lid screws on my case are now about 3/4 way in, but the Gamebit is screwed (lol). I mean, I didn't even use it to open the freakin' original case (used a BIC pen then)!!!!!
I don't think I did anything wrong; I put the case upsidedown on a hard surface and applied enough pressure while screwing to NOT let the Gamebit slip. Suddenly I hear a faint "klack, klack klack" while screwing. That's it, the gamebit's worn out. EXCUSE ME, ARE THESE THINGS MADE OUT OF ALUMINIUM??? What ever happened to chrome-vanadium?? Oh, it cost only 11 EUROS.

So, what shall I do? Send this piece of... uhm... shoddy quality to divineo or what? If they replace it, it'll be the same with the new one I guess...

So does anyone know a shop or anything that sells usable gamebits (preferably in Germany)?

Hi Dionysius.. we've had a debate about gamebits on another thread here. Initially i had the same problem as you with the cheap gamebit drivers. I then got what i thought looked like a proper chrome-vanadium driver off Ebay. It worked great for me but another guy bought the same one and had problems... anyway this was the link

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

The picture isnt at all like the driver we got but like i say it worked really well for me although the screws in mine dont sound to be as tight as some of these cases..

Well thanks, Kaseryn! But I think I found one in Germany. On Ebay, too. Will post an update as soon as I have the new Gamebit.

Uhm, there has to be some sort af pattern or logic to the too inflexible plastic of some cases. I think Brakken had a transparent blue one and his screws were too tight as well? Mine's transparent green. Too hard plastic. Which makes me wonder if anyone got the metallic blue special edition? I guess someone should create a poll or something. Why, oh why did my xbox dvd drive have to die a sudden death a few days ago..... only adds to the pain...

"IT'S THE GAMECUBE REPLACEMENT CASE PLOT. ALL THE CASE MANUFACTURERS HAVE CONSPIRED TO ENDLESSLY SELL US EVER SO SLIGHTLY IMPROVED; YET SOMEWHAT ALWAYS - IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER - FAULTY CASES! EVERYBODY RUN!"

j/k

Am I the only one having a console bad luck streak lately?

O.K., did anyone actually replace the darn nintendo screws with some from the hardware store; with philips heads?
