This Tutorial is for any PSP users with Iriver2 H320(20gb) or H340(40gb) multi codec jukebox.
If you do not have one and want similar results you can buy usb mini hard drive and link it with PSP threw device like this
http://www.macally.com/new/new_phr250otg.html with this theirs no limit to size of drive you can install.
I recently purchased a Iriver2 H320 from a buddy of mine. I was a little depressed to see it didn't play video. doing some research threw
http://www.misticriver.net. I fixed video issue with different regions firmware. Looking into foreign firmware i realized on the US models they removed USBOTG Function. I came across several articles on mods to enable Host Function. Most using external power source. Host function would allow me to transfer file back and forth from psp to iriver without pc
First off i give credit austinv at
http://www.dapreview.net/comment.php?comment.news.1573 for his insight on the iAudio X5.
If you have a choice get a X5 far easier and no mod needed
If you happen to have an Iriver this is for you
Things Needed: Soldiering Iron, Wrapping wire, jewelers screwdriver,2 USB - mini usb type B, Male USB - Female USB Extension cable. If you have host cable you wont need extension cable and one on usb-mini type b.
Power Source:
Their are two ways to do this mod one way wire usb to external power to power up psp usb or you can do it the clean way an internal mod. The power has been removed from usb host port on us models international don't worry about internal mod or power source.
if you choose to use external power source here is a link for it
http://www.misticriver.net/boards/showthread.php?t=7700
that link assumes you have or are going to order a cable i haven't found host cable any way that's why i made it
internal power mod can be done by running +5v to pin one of host plug. I used 15watt soldiering iron and wrapping wire for this its very thin and insulated. I will provide pictures later
Host Cable:
host plugs call for mini usb type A to female USB type A (like the back of your computer) but I couldn't find it anywhere so i made one using a type b which fits and is the same except for one thing. two pins on type A are bridged to let unit its plug into know that its a host.
If you don't have soldiering skills and you don't want to take mini b end apart use SIMPLE Mini B Host Mod in Picture and skip to joining mini and female cable together. I wouldn't do that to my Iriver though. So first off you need to take one of you usb - mini cable cut and peel back mini sides plastic to expose actual wires soldiered to pads find pin 5 and soldier to pin 4. This can be done without ruining integrity of the cable i cut down the middle with a razor blade and was able to put back together and keep original form. once this is done you now can cut male USB end off. I cut it close to mini end since other usb-mini cable being used is long enough. On your USB Extension cable cut female end off leaving about 3-5 inches match both colors from moded usb mini b plug to female USB plug. when done tape up and you now have a grade A host plug.
With this and power mod of choice you know can hook up most usb mass storage devices to your iriver such as digital cameras, card readers, other mp3 players and of course Playstation Portable.
The transfer rate is tolerable it runs at usb 1 speeds even though both devices are 2. I've tested speeds with transferring back and forth and speeds are as follow
Copying from PSP to Iriver
16mb file 1 minute
93mb file 6 minutes
134mb file 8 minutes
Copying to PSP from Iriver
93mb file 8 minutes
241mb file 18 minutes
This is only good for large files the Iriver is only capable at copying one file at a time. This is great for Game ISO backups, and Video
I hope this helps someone. Thanks for great people in the psp scene for Their hard work.
Humma your the man.
Also Team Executer is suppose to being coming out with some exploit/driver to allow the PSP to host so that it may be able to take devices like these and use them as memory. That would save time copying and allow iso to run from Iriver, X5 and other usb hard drives. That would truly make my PSP PIMPED
