Hi. This is my first post in this forum.
I already modded my cube in order to fit a dvd-r inside.
It's not hard to do, since all you have to do is cut anything that is in the path of the regular sized dvd
Trully sorry is the fact that your "OPEN" button will go to history, since you wil break the mechanism, and the ON light lens will also disappear.
To start, I dissasambled my cube and took the cover apart. Then, I removed the top, and put the cover back on. Looking from the top, I aligned the full size DVD with the rotor and sketched the cutting lines. Then, with the help of a dremel, did the job.
Then , I rebuilt the interior of the cube using the case of a set of blank dvd's.
I chose this because the size is already perfect, made the hole for the drive and glued it to the original case. Last, I drilled and 1/8" hole in the front of the controllers port, rigth infront of the ON led. Some paint here and there, and voila. A perfectly working gamecube with full sized dvd capacity.
I have noy yet tried to read beyond the 1.4 Gb, and dont' think I will. Don't want to risk damaging my laser.
About media issues, my cube prefers the big ones over the mini-dvd's. All my regular sized dvd are DRE free, while the minis always fail the read test at any point. Also, I can find DVD-r half the price of the mini.
At the negative side, the motor takes a little longer to spin up the disk, for the added weight. Same happens when you open the cover and the cube tries to stop it. Will someone tell me if this will burn the motor???
If you are confident in this type of work, do it. It was fun to me.
If you dont want to do it, you can buy a modded case.
And finally, the easiest way to play dvd-r madia, is to play without the top cover. Just leave it without the screws and take it apart just when you are reading a full sized dvd. However, you'll have to push the lid switch down with a elastic band or something so the cube will think the lid is closed.
AND FINALLY!!!! Very important: ALWAYS HAVE THE LID OPEN WHEN REASSEMBLING YOUR CUBE, or you might break the lid switch.
