Rumor: Circuit City employee says PS3 will be cut to $499.99
We received an e-mail from a supposed employee of retail chain Circuit City who claims he wishes to remain anonymous. The employee claims that the store receives its ads 2 weeks in advance and he has seen the ad for July 15th to the 21st, which has the PS3 advertised for $100 less than normal at a retail price of $499.99. Sony will still allow for the five Blu-ray movies offer to be used in conunjction with the price cut, and the new price may be announced during E3.

An anonymous guy who MIGHT work at a big-box electronics store saw an advertisement slated to run more than a week in the future?

It is not unusual for retail ads to be sent one or two weeks in advance. In fact, most stores do receive their ads at least 1 week before hand. This price cut is most likely just a Circuit City thing though and not something from Sony. Circuit City probably has too much PS3 stock in their warehouse and wants to get rid of it.

Still too much money.
If it was five free games instead of movies then they would have a sale. That is if there are five PS3 games worth owning.

if the PS3 could sell at $500 the 20gb model wouldn't have been cut for lack of sales. people that were willing to spend $500 would have done so. the price cut needs to be $200 minimum which won't happen.
also the problem with PS3 being so much more expensive is the fact that it gives ms and nintendo tons of room to drop the price of there consoles if sony does indeed drop there price of the PS3.

Nintendo won't lower the price of the wii, Nintendo always sell consoles at a profit so they really can't go much lower, and they don't need to as the wii is selling well anyway

nintendo likes profit but they have always been one of the most willing to drop console prices, they also usually end up dropping the price of there consoles lower than anyone else.
it wouldn't be a PS3 price drop that would make nintendo need to drop the price, it would be a reaction to an ms price drop that ms did because of a PS3 drop. nintendo wants to be the cheapest console, thats been part of there marketing, if the 360 was the same price as the wii or cheaper nintendo would drop the price.

Again I disagree with this statement. Alot of people believed the 20GB version to be crippled. If the only difference between the 20GB & the 60GB was the harddrive 60GB would have sold less. I mean why not when you could buy an 100GB upgrade drive for $40 and have $540 invested in the same as a $600 60GB.
Also $100 this early will still show significant sales increase. That they are able to do that now mid-summer means that another price drop in November is highly likely if sales don't pick up but they should with all the new titles coming out now.
And over at cheapassgamer they have adds for CC, Target, & BB sometimes 2~3 weeks ahead of time so don't brush this aside as rumor purely because of that.

Well that would be nice I guess, but still no sale for me. Price is not my issue, games are. Show me a few good games that I personally like and I'll reconsider. I mean sure I wanna play Ninja Gaiden, but just 1 game isn't worth me getting any console. A hardware revision would also help, but I'm guessing they're waiting to have ps2/1 compatibility on the PAL spec machines equal to the NTSC machines before they do it.
Oh and russcarr ninty is probably making in excess of $120+ on each wii, so they can afford to go much, much, much lower; though, I could be wrong about the exact amount. Anywho $499 isn't so bad, but they better be ready to match ms when they drop the price on their machine. All that said I think this is only a circuit city thing, but I hope it isn't (that I don't mind paying $600 doesn't mean that I want to)

with the PS3 losing exclusives and the 360 already cheaper even if the PS3 gets a price cut and a couple exclusives it can't just be marginally better to justify the price. gametrailers did a thing on the bonus round about what sony needs to do at E3, it was actually unbiased and right on i thought. its worth a watch you can dl it, its about 20 minutes long. they thought the PS3 needs some killer apps and needs enough of them to justify the PS3 price over the 360. i would agree. right now there isn't a game that justifies $600 or even $500. and i don't see mgs4 or FF XIII justifying that price either. those are good games and they can't come soon enough for the PS3, but two games don't justify the cost of even a $500 priced console.
also the reason i think the PS3 20gb version didn't sell was because people that wanted the PS3 badly enough didn't care about price and if they where going to spend $500 then why not get the $600 version. but i don't think sony dropping the price of the PS3 to $500 is going to open up a whole new demographic.
another thing i liked about the PS3 thing on gametrailers was they mentioned something alot of people don't talk about. most original xbox owners bought the xbox at $199 when halo 1 came out, and then most everybody else bought it when it went down to $150 around the time halo 2 came out.
the same thing applied tomost PS2 owners, who purchased the PS2 after it dropped to $199, in fact over 80 million of the owners of PS2's did. and alot of them bought it after the price drops that followed. i was kinda surprised they didn't mention this compared to xbox owners.
there have been studies that show video game consoles start really selling well once they hit the price point of $199. its the price point ms wants to get to. sony is a long ways from getting to that point. and unless they change there business attitude i don't see them ever doing that because it would mean the dropped the price more than they have with any other console. percentage wise the cheapest a PS3 will ever get is $287.
this can all be debated but its guidlines that show how the gaming industry works. also the most powerful console hasn't won a console war. and sony this time pushed to be the most powerful and became the most expensive in the process. i don't think the PS3 will fail but in a way its a failure because it won't win and sony is giving up alot of the demographic that made them so sucessful. the demographic that buys consoles once they get to $199 and cheaper.
