Ultimate Mortal Kombat heads to DS
Mr. Boon has confirmed tht Midway are to bring Ultimate Mortal Kombat to the DS. Despite MK being available on lots of platforms, Ed Boon thinks the DS version can be a total success. Boon believes the WiFi multiplayer and puzzle mode should add some differentiation over the MK versions for home consoles.
Quote:
IGN: So Mortal Kombat 3 can be obtained for cheap on the Xbox 360, and as one of many games on the PlayStation Portable for a bargain price. What are you doing on the Nintendo DS to make the game a worthwhile purchase?
Ed Boon: You're right. What we like to do is offer Mortal Kombat on different platforms so that we can take advantage of what those platforms have to offer. In the case of the DS, you can now take Ultimate MK with you and play against friends or strangers where you could not before….basically anywhere there is WiFi access. We also added Puzzle Kombat as an added bonus and included online play with that as well. Neither of the previous releases let you play these games portable and online. That's one of the features the DS offers over the home consoles.

Ult. MK3 for DS?! Awesome news!
I still feel that the 2d MK games, ending with Ultimate MK3, were the best MK's had to offer, overall, trumping their latter 3d offerings in quality...
Being able to play MK WiFi should make the game as fun as it used to be walking up to random people in the arcades & challenging them, and maybe making new friends and new opponents in the process;

Better have Raiden in it. I hope it has all the characters and not just the ones from UMK3.

UMK3 had a shitload of characters tho. There are like 5 or 6 characters in Trilogy that arent in Ultimate Mk3 and thats the bosses, Johnny Cage, Raiden and Baraka

Bringing a 10 year old game back for the same price if not more then it was 10 years ago....makes sense!

But to argue the point, and justify the cost, you've got the added value of:
1. Portability... The game's not ever been portable...
2. Wi-Fi... The game's not been Wi-Fi anywhere...
3. Puzzle Kombat Wi-Fi (Yes, it's a minor thing, but still there, nonetheless)
Do these add-up to justify the price of a current DS release? Perhaps not, but considering there's many people who haven't ever played it, and also those who would like it for a *current* portable system, I think that it's going to find a market;

Wi-Fi games always pick up a pretty big user base. And it's not really going to cost them all that much money to develop it since it's pretty much a done game already. Just needed to throw in a few extras, which, at most, took 3 weeks of dev time.

Walkingtiger, I agree with you, the 2D MK's were the best especially MK3/UMK3. Liu Kang was the best
