Wiiconnect24 channels saying its off, but its on
I did a wiikey install for a friend and didn't think to turn off wiiconnect24 before doing the install. After the install he tried messing with the news and weather channels and noticed the weather channel wouldn't work. We tried the steps on the forum (take out battery, format memory, etc), but now all the channels say is that wiiconnect24 is turned off, but he turned it on. No matter how many times we turn off wiiconnect24 and turn it back on it won't see that it's on. Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix it? The date and time are correct, we tried everything with and without the battery in, and we tried to download the everybody votes channel, nothing works. The non-wiiconnect24 channels (shop and browser) work fine, so I know its not an internet problem. Even after downloading everybody votes it still says its off even tho it's on. Any ideas?

Try to reconfirm wiiconnect24 usage. Which is in the "internet" configuration, "the third" button. Can't recall the title of that button.
Edit: it should be wii usage agreement, not wiiconnect24 usage.

Alot of people have been experiencing this problem. Following these steps fixed my problem. I tried alot of other re-formatting techniques but i can assure you this may work.
1- Backup any game saves on SD card and any Miis on a controller
2- Reformat Wii Internal memory ( Found on third page of Wii options)
3- Turn Wii back on and go through initial setup to completion (do not need to setup internet yet)
4- Turn Wii off and remove lithium battery panel along with battery (silver screw on bottom side of wii)
5- Turn Wii back on (with battery still removed) and again reformat internal memory
6- When Wii turns off after reformat, unplug power for fifteen minutes ( with battery still removed)
7- Plug Wii in, Turn Wii back on and again go through initial setup to completion (Battery still removed)
8- Enter your internet settings now, and run internet connection test
9- Go to WiiConnect 24 and make sure you have it set to ON, with Stand By also ON
10- Make sure you go to Internet USER Agreement and select ACCEPT
11- Now go to NEWS channel and hit start ( if all has gone well you should now be able to download update)
12- Go to weather channel, select start and go through setup. ( You should now get your weather update)
13- Re-install your game saves back onto Wii(you have to insert each game disc to re-install saves to wii)
14- Save your Mii's back to Wii from controller (you will have to create 1 new Mii first on Mii channel)
15- Turn Wii power off, then reinstall battery and battery panel ( make sure battery faces correct way)

In my experience, no need to reformat wii.
Just make sure things below.
1. date and time are correct.
2. reconfirm user agreement.

acemilo, as I mentioned in some of the other similar threads, I am in the same situation. I've tried all of the suggested steps to fix, but none have worked for me.

To all those people who had trouble with WiiConnect24, did you have Standby On or Off? I just want to know if it's incorrect for my chipped system to need Standby ON to use those services? When Standby is Off with Connect24 On, Weather, News, etc don't work, but with Standby On, everything seems to be ok. Is that normal?
capsela - When you say News is "broke," do you mean the updates won't download properly because that is what currently happens for me so that might be "normal." Or do you mean that Connect24 still tells you to turn it On in the Wii Options?

so should you turn internet off before you install a chip? I ask because I am going to be chipping my system in the very near future.

This is perfectly normal behaviour of the respective channels, they require Standby on. As for the reasons why you would have to consult with Nintendo.
Think! It's not illegal yet.

That is a smart thing to do, I also did and after modding turned it back on.
Never had any problems.

Surely its just a 'bug'? I reported some months back that the Wii used 10x as much power when the LED is Orange than when its Red (due to it being permenantly on-line)
The solution was to turn "Standby Connect = OFF".. This makes the Wii shut down to it 'low power' mode when you turn it off... But in this mode, the Weather and News don't work.. They simply say that the Internet connection is off.
I am sure that this is simply a bug, but try as I might, I can't find anyway to report this to Nintendo.. I tried sending a report to Nintendo USA and UK.. USA told me to use my local contact (UK), and the UK didn't even reply!

It most certainly is not. It is intended behaviour. To quote Nintendo's Forecast Channel Tech Support page:

In order to receive downloads for the Forecast Channel, you must have your Wii console set to allow both "WiiConnect24" and "Standby Mode."
|
Thus you can safely assume they are aware of that behaviour. I recall Nintendo giving a half-baked reason for this at some point, but I cannot remember when and where anymore.
Think! It's not illegal yet.
