Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 for PS3 On Launch!
It looks as if you'll be able to run Linux on the PS3 from launch as Yellow Dog Linux confirmed that their nex build will indeed be compatible with Sony's next generation machine.
Quote:
YDL v5.0 is slated for release mid-November with support for the Sony PS3 first, and support for the former Apple PowerPC product line to follow. Any updates required to support the Apple PowerPC systems following the release for PS3 will be made available via a free download.
Which systems will be supported?
Terra Soft will initially launch YDL v5.0 with support for the Sony PS3. By the close of 2006, support for the former Apple PowerPC product line will be made available, with intent to provide both DVD and CD install images via YDL.net Enhanced and the public mirrors, while the shipping product will be available on DVD only.

That's a good question. The version of Linux for the PS2 was severaly limited, working through an interface that prevented direct access to the hardware and kernel - exactly to prevent the "emulator" crowd and other pirate based systems (like PS2 booting hacks) to work through this Linux interface.
I'm going to bet the Linux on PS3 has similiar controls, with Sony terrified that people will spend more time playing SNES/Genesis emulators than playing PS3 games (which is pretty much what I'd be doing. SNES on the PSP is fine, but not fast enough).
Or I could play them on my Wii too. (Here's hoping for a "true" port of "Star Ocean 1" for the Wii....)

Note the "ps3 compatible". Just means it's compatible. Never said integrated or anything. I feel this is just a "possibility" that it may be integrated but not a strong feeling for the reasons you mention above +1 million more.

Its kind funny that 5 years ago Sony fanboys were hatin on Microsoft because they all thought that they were going to turn the video game console market into a computer with the introduction of the XBOX.
And now...Its seems that its not MS, But Sony who is turning gamming consoles into computers.
Who-da-thunk-it.
