The best way to make it alltime good is to install an modchip like matrix infinity,dms4 pro se and the crystal chip.
The chips has all the function to boot homebrew from your memory card.
Also you can alternate install an exploit, but this way i never used, because i´m not interessted on softmoded machines, but you can also start homebrew with this method!

You are here to become questions for your answers,so it isn´t a shame to ask for things you don´t know !
I have installed a Modchip in my Ps2 (Matrix Infinity and the other one with DMS4 Pro) i think this is the best method tp play backups and homebrewsoftware.
I can use via DEV 1 or DEV 2( this mode let you start homebrewapps from the memcard (DEV1) or from the harddrive (DEV2)) some programms with my Modchips.
With an FTP Client you can boot the first time from CD/DVD and after booting it you can install the apps to your harddrive or memcard (dev1 or dev2 boot compatible ).
Its the simplest way, because you have alltime a disc (the ftp client) as an backup on cd.
So,you install or let it install a modchip with dev1 mode and install the apps via disc (installscript for the chips, its at the beginning a little bit complicated) ,via FTP or you boot it only from disc!

This is MaxConsole and no other site, this means MaximumSupport for the maximum questions.
Ask everything you want,i´m sure everybody is here to help each other!
An ps2 modchip is hard to install when you don´t have made any solderjobs.
I´m from germany,so i dont know the chip_prices in your country, but i think an matrix infinity installation coast 80-100 dollar (i think it,but i´m not sure)!
Homebrew also works without an modchip, when you must modded with an exploit, but i´m not interessted in it,so i dont can give you any support about softmods/exploits!
