Accessing MC

In order to access Memory Card via USB, is certain modchip required or it can be done simply by plugging it in?

I have modchip that runs cd/dvd backup copies directly and my PS2 version is SCPH30004 but I don't know it's name and if it supports homebrew.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
