New PS2 - What to do?

With the price of the PS2 going down I was thinking of picking one up just for the heck of it but only on the assumption that I'd mod it. With the current generation of PS2s what are the options? I've read a lot of threads here but not sure what works with what as there's been numerious hardware and BIOS revisions which have rendered some of the methods unworkable. So it's looking like modchips are about the only sure way but I'm having trouble determining which one and finding any in the US as every place I saw that was selling them had a big disclaimer that they don't ship to the US. If anyone has some advice please post it. I'm sure there will probably be a few new PS2 owners with the same sort of question.

Funny I actually finally just bought a PS2 the other day. I decided to go the Swap Magic route for now and install Free McBoot. I read up on the Memento thing but it seemed overpriced. And as, apparently, abandonware, I wasn't comfortable spending the money on it.
