Ver. 4 PS2 WONT RUN PSX BACKUPS!

so here's my problem:

I've been following the method where you swap the ps1 disk out with the burnt game when the playstation logo is up.

It works perfectly for his ps2 (not sure what version), but I just got a hold of a "broken" ps2 yesterday. It wouldn't read any discs.

I opened up the ps2 and adjusted the laser by 2 click and it will play all games now perfectly. the only problem is when I try to do what this guy does in the video to get the back ups running, My ps2 freezes on the playstation logo EVERYTIME!

I know Im doing the procedure correctly cause ive done it 100 times on my friends ps2.

if anyone could please help me, it would be beyond appreciated.

thanks in advance,
Legacy.

You should set the cd trimmer below laser but it's not easy on a v.4 (you have to disassemly completely the console, board included).

There's an other possibility (but not effective for me): you could try to set the height of lens by setting the original position of torx screw (as shown on the attachment) by a water-proof felt pen and rotating in clockwise direction of ¼ rotation every time (maximum a whole turn) using a torx screw driver for mobile phone.

My advice is to use only ps2 dvd and don't care about psx cd

correction

on his version 4 you do not disassemble all the way to the motherboard!
go to www(dot)cyber-mag(dot)com at the top menu is laser help/ps2
this article has excellent help for fixing ps2 lasers

the guide shown on cyber-mag.com/station is really good.

What I meant is the "Adjusting the pots" I don't know if you're a magician but, to get these settings below laser is necessary to disassembly it from below part of reader and so, you have to open the whole console (steel plates on board included to take-out from board the optical flat).

I've tried to get to the lens trimmer directly from reader: impossible for me without getting the optical flats damaged (I'm not a magician however

no in fact

READ THRU THIS BEFORE YOU BEGIN, AS THERE ARE TWO TYPE OF LASER TRAY FOR THE VERSION FOUR BOARDS.
no you dont even have to separate the bottom part out at all.

Using information from that site, double-check to verify your version #.

before you open the case hit eject, then clickoff the power or remove the plug, and push the tray slowly back in, but not all the way, so the tray sits partially out. open th cse lid up and angled out, careful for the ribbon if its attached to the lid.(depends on your version).
Now what you should have in front of you is the PS2 topless with the tray partially open.

if you take the either 4 or 2(another depends on your version) very small phillips screws off the lid to the dvd player, then there are two rods the laser rides on.
notice that there are either one or two one-inch white plastic cogs on the back end of the player.(depends on your version)

For the one with one cog, there are two small phillips screws that hold the rod down. on the rod that has the laser going thru its body twice undo both phillips, and carefully slide the rod out. turn the laser over carefully and remove the ribbon from the laser. CAUTION you cant go too far with the laser and if you yank the ribbon from the other side you wiil have to totally disassemble the unit, SO TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CAREFUL!!
(skip next paragraph)

for the one with two cogs the bars are pinched in by the metal clips that hold the cog in place, so mark the cogs so you know where they were before you began as the adjust on these is usually not as critical. on the rod where the laser passes thru the body twice, with a flat-edge screwdriver press in and slde out the clip this should release the rod and slide the rod out. carefully turn the laser over and remove the ribbon from the laser. CAUTION you cant go too far with the laser and if you yank the otherside of ribbon out you will have to totally disassemble the unit, SO TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CAREFUL!!

Now you should have the laser in front of you the laser and you should be able to tell which is the dvd pot and the cd potand which version category your laser falls into according to the chart on website.
This is what I do before I do anything: I write the value of each pot, model# of laser and the serial # of the laser into a book, for each of the stations i've worked on, just to build a database.
Ususally i only have to adjust the dvd pot but there have been a couple of cd pots that have been done too.
Make only small adjustments within the guidelines of the chart and you should be fine, here is where knowing the corrct version of your station comes into play. there are many versions of lasers in the same version station, some have green boards some have orange, even had a 400b with a 400c pc board in it, use the pics and the chart to make your educated decision.

Assembly is typically a revese order like: place lasr ribbon in, press clip, flip laser, slide in rod, slide laser with rod into other rod, either screw down rod or place the clip with cog on rod and slide into place, adjust the cog to your previously marked settings.
Here's a time-saving trick: on the lid to the dvdplayer is a white disc hold down, you can carefully slide it out to test a disc, just make sure the disc is in the tray, with the white-disc on top and correctly(if you put it up-sidedown it might pull the metal disc from the center, if it does be careful and it might be stuck to the top of the dvd discspin motor, snap it back in place)
now you can kind of see what is going on, and if the adjust you made is working or not.
if everything is fine, you can shut it off again and replace the white disc correctly into the dvd lid and then scre the lid back in place, reassemble your unit's lid, careful for the power switch ribbon if it applies to you, and then recheck your handi-work, if happy send me a check for $40 thats usually what i charge for laser adjust you just performed. (just kidding) but no, yeah really, sony's mistake has been a cash cow for me.

Hope this helps you that web site really came in handy for info that worked and if you still need help you can ask here or shadowyknight over there. He's a tech in Austrailia, I'm in San Diego, if you are close by... ha everybodys close by on the web it seems!!
