Mario Kart Bricking DS

Ive just invested in a DS and plan to run Roms etc on it, but i've heard a few stories of them being bricked by the Mario Kart Rom. What exactly is the deal with this and how can i avoid bricking my DS. I dont plan on re-flashing the firmware just yet, i'll use the passkey. Can someone explain how the DS gets bricked from a Rom or do i have the wrong end of the stick? If the DS does get bricked, is it possible to re-flash?

Mario Kart would brick a DS with an earlier Flashme on it.
The latest Flashme does not have this problem. So if you're going ot use flashme, get the latest.

So there's no danger of this happening just using a passkey type adaptor?

in order to fix it you have to flash the new flashme into a gba cart and hold the START+SELECT+A+B buttons down on startup
