Play Backup PS2 Game
Okay I have my modded Xbox, but there is a game I wanna play that's only for PS2. I googled to see if there was a way to play PS2 games on the XBox (doubtfully, cuz if there was a way I probably would know about it). There were stupid answers like "Take a PS2 and put it on top of your XBox and you will be playing PS2 on Xbox." One person said they could do it but they had to upgrade, which is kinda believable since the Xbox is a "crippled computer with a Pentium III Processsor" and if it's possible to play PS2 games on PC, then a Xbox with higher specs should be fine. However, the best answer I found for people who have Xbox and not PS2, is to have both.
This is where I need help. A while ago I made a thread, but things have changed. I have a credit card and can buy things online now, so that would help.
I have access to two PS2's which I could buy. One slimline and the older one. I was told you need a network adapter to play games off a hard drive for the older one. I can buy one, but I am thinking I could just use the slim one my friend has.
I also hear a PS2 can be softmodded using action replay. My friend says he has a PS2 action replay.
What should I do?

hey whats up dude, if i was you i would buy the older/bigger ps2. you plop a hd right in the bay and hook it with the network adapter. the hardrive must be an ata/133 3.5". i have a maxtor diamondmax plus9 160gb. after you get the hardware you must install free mcboot with the help of your buddies ar max (just follow the readme that comes with free mcboot). once you get that going you will need hdloader. now you must get the iso to your harddrive. the easiest way is to put the hd in an enclosure (dont forget to remove the jumper) and use winhiip to reformat your drive. then use the same app to install your iso. this is easier than it sounds. try it out. heres more info on installing free mcboot.

Wouldn't it be better to use the Slimline PS2 since it has an ethernet port built in, you wouldn't need a network adapter.
Also, is there a certain type of action replay you need, or does any action replay work?

well, hdloader reads the isos from the harddrive. the network adapter connects the hd to the ps2. the slim ps2 does not had a bay for the hd. the action replay you need says "max" on it and it came with a 16mb usb stick (at the time).

Can't I just leave the HD outside or on top?
My friend also has a "Maxdrive" whatever that is

It think it's called USB Extreme, I made a thread about it a long time ago and was told to use a mod:
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=86202
Back then I didnt have a credit card so i couldn't buy the network adaptor.
What I meant was could I use the normal hard drive, but instead of having it in an expansion bay, just have it on top of the PS2 or something.

well, i was looking around and it seems that hdloader has better compatibility than hd advance or usb extreme. if you wanted to use a normal harddrive on top the ps2 you would need an external usb enclosure. for better compatibility and less problems i advise you to get the network adapter (bba) and a harddrive for the bay, but you dont have to listen to me. here is a list of compatible hds.

2005-12-06: If you have a slimline PStwo and want to connect a hard drive but don't want the hard drive to lay unprotected ontop of the console, there's a new producted called HD Combo that helps exactly that. HD Combo is essentially a whole new bottom replacement case that let you slip in a hard drive with the IDE connector and power internally connected (external power adaptor) and protected from external abuse. It's also compatible with the modified HDLoader / HD Advance so you don't have to move the hard drive to the computer anymore and there's two fans keeping the HD cool. The installation is a bit tidious and currently only PStwo v12 and v13 is supported, not the new v14.

What would that be? I dont get how you plug in an IDE Hard Drive to a Network port, how is that possible.
Also, do you need a working DVD-Drive. The drive on the FAT PS2 my brother has if iffy.. The reason why I wanna do this is cuz he bought a game 6 times and we thought it was the disk, but I think it's the drive (his PS3 reads it fine). Do I only have to use the Action Replay disk once to install HD loader and form there on I can just run everything off the hard drive?

ive never hread that method before. then again, ive only had a fatty ps2. after the installation and setup of free mcboot everything would be done through usb sticks of ftp to the memory card, instead of disc.

The adapter has both ethernet and ide connections. This method has been around quite awhile...
No just because you put a HDD and a network adapter on you fat ps2 doesnt mean that it is modded. You will need the HD loader .elf and a method to boot it. Free McBoot is pretty useful if you are trying to set this up. There are several other methods, do some research and see what works for you.

Why did Sony put an IDE thing on the ethernet adaptor? To play music?
but then once they realised people were using it to pirate games (it should be used to backup, but there are people that do, and Sony assumes letting people backup games means that they will pirate, they put DRM cuz they dont trust us and they violate our rights to try and protect theirs) they just put a built in ethernet port in the slim and no IDE?

I have a slim PS2, model number SCPH-77001. I also want to play back up games off a hard drive because I have no solder skills and really am uncomfortable with messing wiht the console.
The SlimPS2 already has a network adapter jack on teh back and I have an external Network-capbale/USB Hard drive in its own enclosure...Buffalo 250GB drive.
Can I just connect a network cable to the drive and the and use HDLoader to play ISO backups of games from the HD? Is that all that is required? What if I connect the drive via USB instead of network?
Sorry for the noob questions, I just really want to get this working. Where do I find the loader software and is that all I need?
Thanks for whoever can help.

No for the network.
Ok for the USB.
But USB advance which loads iso from usb hdd is real slow, long long loading time and game compatibility is about 50%.
