ps2 v12 mod not working all the time

I modded a slim ps2 for a friend of mine a v12 I think and am having problems with it reading discs. I checked over all the points and everything is on good and tight and with enough solder I read somewhere that adding another ground cable could remedy the problem and was wondering if anyone knew whether or not it could work or had any other suggestions to try?

How thick are your ground and power wires?
