Playstation 2 Mobile

Most of you will probably be familiar with the work of the man Ben Heckendorn (www.benheck.com)

His work with console mods has really intrested me recently and as such I setting out on my own mission to make the PS2 into a portable console. (yes i know he already did it but i'm designing mine a different way)

The basic idea is going to be a laptop clamshell design, top half screen bottom, bottom half tech bit.

I was originally considering useing a fat PS2 v1-v11 however I've been looking around and found the automan hack to enable the use of an IDE HD on the slim ps2 v12+ this would make the project so much easier as I wouldnt need the disc as I can backup all the games i have onto a HD. Currently I'm trying to find a screen suitable for the project, preferably around the 12" mark, obviosly LCD.

Current Checklist:
- Research Adding IDE HD without a modchip (using MCFreeboot)
- Find a suitable monitor.
- How to connect a monitor and PS2 Slim to one power supply.
- How to add in a battery.

As you can see the checklist is quite a lot of research at this stage, but i'm intending to keep this thread updated on what I've managed with the project.

Any suggestions for features or methods will definatly be considered

Or if anyone knows something thats on the checklist and can explain it that would be super!

Just on a side note I actually have no experience with the insides of electronics. (most i've ever done was rescue a 360 from RROD) So expect some amusing screw-ups!

If I had more time, I'd love to do something along those lines
with a dreamcast console I've got laying around.

If you have no experience with electronics on an engineering
level, you're in for some hard times. You're definetely going
to want a Slim's motherboard - the fat consoles, even as
small as they are, is just too large. To further complicate
things, you're going to want a smaller LCD screen if you've any
hope of keeping the thing running off of an enclosed battery.
I'd recommend something out of a portable DVD player; they
are seven inches on average, but the battery provided with
those things are still fairly prodigious.

He's wanting a pure portable experience, i.e. connection to
120V not required, or trying to lug around a phatty PS2 case.

thats pretty bulky. just get a psp. along side the mediocre psp library of games you also get the entire psx library and if you get custom firmware youll then have access to all the nes, genesis, snes, gba, neogeo, cps1, cps2 and atari2600 games. that would keep any gamer busy on the go. plus you can use for headphones for the bus, church or where ever you decide to game. you cant use headphones with the ps2.

Actually, you can use headphones with the ps2. Just requires
an adapter.

In any case, going with a PSP defeats the purpose for a couple
of reasons. A) You can't play straight-up PS2 titles. B) It's gay.

You can, obviously, play NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. on a PS2 as
well.

In any case, my problem with the with any portable has always
been the lack of being able to play games from the console it
was based off of, in native format (in other words, you can't
shove an NES cartridge into a Game Boy.) It's why I've never
actually owned a portable game system, aside from the fact that
I was too old by the time portable game systems came around.

Having a portable system based off of native architecture would
make for a superior product, just for the fact that you wouldn't
have to purchase product aside from what you already own. A
portable true-PS2 unit would be able to play DVDs, CDs, real PS2
games, and whatever else my home PS2 can do without the need
of custom-made software.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't do any of those for too overly long.
A true PS2 is going to pull some power, and any lightweight
battery solution is not going to last very long. Couple that with
the requisite large-sized LCD, and the OP has some serious things
to work out.

Add all that to the problem of condensing a phat PS2, a hard
drive, adequate power supply, and display unit into a workable
portable package, and he's got quite a project on his hands.
