PSP Slim/2000 and hardware modding....

.....may not be possible. At least I think not with with our existing methods and tools.

Sorry guys. It does appear the nand could be embedded together with one of the sony bgas.

I do not have an SLR cam, so my shots are not that zoomed.
I'll post some pics later in this thread.

Anyway, I'm no expert at all these reverse-engineering stuff...so need more heads into this.
So till more of you guys get your slims, that we can figure things out better.

Hey AccessDenied,

Looking forward to your close up pics.

What's the new NAND model number on the 2000? Would be interesting if any of the Dev's (3.3v or 1.8v) will work with it.

Until they make some progress on the "classic" PSPs regarding firmware 3.60 I dont think we'll see anything drastic on the 2000. Although it would be interesting to see how/what changes have been made to ID Storage.

I'm guessing Sony would have attached hardware specific settings to keys which are needed to boot into firmware 3.60 as a base, and if we change the keys to allow the fw1.5 IPL we'd find parts of the PSP not functioning. ala Dark LCD, battery charging problems etc.

Its definately exciting times ahead

A interesting thread

Macro photography does not need a SLR camera. Try with some good lighting with what ever camera you have. Sunlight does good most the time. Also a flat bed scanner gets good results on motherboard.
Before Pandora there where skilled unbrickers

So what are those 2 chips located at the back(opposite side of cpu) near the usb? Suppose it would be sensible from Sony's point of view to merge them though anyway.

I am waiting for your pic. I look at to the pic from tgbus. There are 2 big chips below the screen. I guest, it is GPU and CPU.Inside the CPU chip may contain the flash+RAM(This look like embeded micro-controller chip.). Or the NAND-flash is 8 pin chip with serial interface platform.

Regards,
SPUED

P.S. I got 1 of PSP2006.

Hi guys,

Firstly, sorry for the delays.
I've been busy the this week at the office.

Secondly, I just found out that I left the sd card out of the cam so it captured the images at low res onto the cam's internal ram.

I've already put it all back after taking the shots and don't want to take the console apart again.

But the good news is, I got all the numbers and makes down.

1. This is with the board facing up.
The silver/grey stuff on the top bga wasn't difficult to remove and reveal
the prints on it. Doesn't look like Sony was trying to hide anything.
Probably just some insulation

a) The chip with the silvery/grey sticker is:
Sony Computer
Entertainment Inc
CXD2975BGG

b) The bottom chip with the semi-transparent stuff is:
Sony Computer
Entertainment Inc
CXD5029

c) The chip with the word 'Sony' and the right of the UMD clip is:

Sony
M4025GG

2.The back of the board

a) The top 2 chips with the silver/grey stuff

i) 902169
20AK2L
0728

ii) A known chip in silver/gold:

27-000

b) Circled in red at the bottom is a new chip by Sharp:

0730 3y
Sharp
LR388A1

Perhaps for the video output?

c) There is a fourth Sony chip on the back which is not on the pic

2007
SCEI
727kV63

Hi AccessDenied,

Your right.. the Sharp LR388A1 is for video out. The Video iPods use another model of this "System on a Chip" the Sharp LH7A400 SOC.

It looks like Sony's gone and made their own NAND
The Sony BGAs there dont seem to be return results in google.

Thanks AccessDenied you had saved my PSP Slim from opening it.......NAAAH!!!
(I just have to see it my self! lol)

BTW if all of you would have a request sections/portions which more macro Pics... (If i just get crazy enough maybe i'll lift up the NAND/RAM so we can see the Trace.... )
just post it here and i'll be opening up my Slim tom...(wish me luck)

Yes, I think so too they created their own nand.
One thing about Sony, they learn from their mistakes.

Suspicions are that they integrated it together with the CPU.
And it seems true so far. I tried tracing the tracers from the CPU and it doesn't lead to anything that looks like a nand.
But then again, we are dealing with a multi-layered board.

Either they intentionally did it to block us out or to cut down power consumption of the slims....
I don't know....

The fourth Sony chip looks pretty suspicious but seems too small to be a nand.

Waiting for the rest of guys to get your slims so we can get better input

I just noticed that the CPU on the newer PSP SLim according to AcCeSsDeNiEd

a) The chip with the silvery/grey sticker is:
Sony Computer
Entertainment Inc
CXD2975BGG

The past CPU from TA-079 anf TA-081 is CXD2962BGG

and from TA-082 and TA-086 is CXD2967BGG

Isn't it possible that it has the same Pinout for it's NAND/RAM IC....

Just my guess...

Copy the Pinout from where $am$ung NAND is connected... connect external NAND then test if it boots....( Very tempting but i have bad experience in removing PSP CPU...... 2 out of 10 only works.... with its tiny points/balls it's very hard to Rework! huhuhuhu

The silver/Grey stuff is a kind of heat sink, I seen red'ish rubber pads, Grey paste, and so on. When removing it was the other side next to metal? If so, I wander why the need to cool down the NAND?

It's not really cooling per se, more like - let's call it- "potential hotspot dissipation"... as anyone should know heat is the main electronics killer (things like cigarette residue compounds the issue as it coats everything it comes in contact with and decreases heat dissipation).

As far as I can tell, none of the chips/components in the PSP actually gets very hot (esp. at those voltage/current levels, though the LCD's LED's do tend to heat quite a bit), but it is better to distribute any heat than it is to leave it focused, also, those pads may serve a dual purpose in that they'd give some soft pressure onto a BGA (physical shock prevention like shocks on a car dampen sway and such).

Just checked the CPU ..it's a little thicker and the IC below it seems to be the RAM/NAND...by looking beneath it it looks like it has different pinout..(just my guess) so piggybacking will not be possible...(huhuhu)

Just a comparison of CPU and NANDs

Comparing the Mobos TA-081 , TA-085 and TA-086

Closer look at the traces

Already tested by our fellow mates..Pandora's battery has effect it turns the Slim on (MAYBE Service Mode)...but no response on memstik and wifi bulb...
When Pandora's memstick is inserted LCD backlight turns on...

The location of these 2 chips makes me suspect something. They're directly behind the cpu, hiding the traces.

The psp slim does have 66MB of nand (inclueding spare data).
Still regarding nand, it seems that the idstorage area is fully encrypted now.
May the scene be with you

Cheers to Dark_Alex/Moonlight, Adrahil, Fanjita, Ryoko_no_usagi, Groepaz, Booster, Cswindle, Joek2100, Tyranid, Nem, MrBrown, psppet, xorloser, tmbinc, every devs from Prometheus, emu_kidid and Shadowsan from GCOS, gcmods operators, every one who supported us, and every devs who I forgot to mention on this signature

Thanks to the pspway.ch staff and users to have come to see me from so far away and give me a psp slim to toy with !
