Online retailers ditch Royal Mail for Modern Warfare 2 launch

Timely delivery is key when you're an online retailer, especially when one of the biggest game launches is about to happen in Modern Warfare 2. So news has come forward that one of the biggest online retailers in the UK have ditched strike-it-lucky Royal Mail and have found a suitable courier service.

This retailer just so happens to be Play.com, probably one of the most popular sources for online game sales. We’ve bought from them in the past and can definitely remember them sticking with Royal Mail with previous orders.

One strike too many though it seems, we can’t blame them. November 10th shall be forever known as ‘Modern Warfare 2 day’, nothing shall get in the way!

Below is a portion of the email we received:

”To ensure we get your order to you by the release date of Tuesday 10th November we will be dispatching this with a courier and not Royal Mail”

Good. I hope more retailers ditch Royal Snail. They have really shot themselves in the foot with the strike. Totally unnecessary and now instead of a pay rise they will be made unemployed.

Stores been doing this since the strike started play.com has been selling pretty early while GAME hides behind a pre-order scheme.

Personally i am sick of the royal mail striking every year if the staff can't understand that the RM is being forced to downsize and has no choice due to the government then im sure they don't understand that this loss of profit is simply choosing who goes first, 50,000 must go by 2012 for the company to survive.

this is only a one off as COD MW2 is maybe biggest release of 2009 & due to recent strikes(which are now called off),Although this is nothing new lots of online companies offer different shipping options when going to the checkout,If this is going to be a regular thing by play.com Then I guess if you want it deliveed regular 1st class then shipping may still be free,or if posted by another company like DHL or TNT expect to pay a extra price for postage & packages either left on Doorstep or a long haul to pick your item up from the despatch depot, good thing about royal mail is if you are out you usually have to go far to pickup the Item,in the last month I got 2 items shipped by TNT one was a pair of tritton axpro 5.1 headset cost about £140 & these where to be delivered tracked on day of del I saw TNT van pull up about 50 yards from my house & take a parcel 2 a house 3 doors away,I thought he must have my parcel so I went out to see the driver on his way back to the van I said you got a delivery for 94 (my house number) & he looked a bit bemused he said " Oh ive just del to that house there sorry " it was number 104 & even though the parcel was tracked he left it in a outhouse & left a card in the porch telling house holders a parcel in outhouse & signed the sheet himself,I was a bit pissed off I could of easily lost these if I didnt go outto see the driver & waited for him to delivery my packet which wouldnt of happened..another about 2 weeks later I ordered a item from hong kong being del by DHL when Packet arrived I was at work but my wife was at home but infortunatly during the 10min gap she takes my daughter to school the driver turned up to deliver my goods & left a slip & taken back to his depot, when I got back I read the slip it basically said I cn phone for another del date but I only get one more chance & thats it if im out they will send it back to the depot for me to collect which they will hold for a few days before returning to sender,so not taking the risk I decided to collect my self which ended up a 40mile round trip, even though theres a DHL del office in my local town they taken back to the HUB at the airport as that where it was delivered from,I may have had a few bad experiances too with royal mail but considering over the years how many deliveries I have had from them 99% of the items get delivered in the allocated time

Well i work as a postman for Royal mail (wish we was still on strike how we have been treated) but any of you thats ordered MW2 i wouldnt go thinking that its not going to come due to the strike (as its off now).
Ive got to admit RM is the cheapest when ordering online. May not the best, but ive known couriers not get items posted on time. MW2 will get through dont worry about it!!

am not fashist, if i said to my corporal the same thing he would have laughed and made me run 5 miles in the marines. The way i have been brought up is if you get told to do something you just fing do it or leave the force.

i don't pretend to understand but as a customer of royal mail i get a bit peed off when my stuff doesn't come and having strikes is only gonna make people go else where and i cant see how that's gonna help with your wages.

fair play to you for standing up about it but your just kicking me in the balls not the people who are actually making your life hell.

oh and i am another total twat for saying my opinion. says a lot about you :P thats basically the responce of someone who is uneducated in my experience

I think the bigger picture here is that Royal Mail like the US Postal Service are beginning to show their age and cannot compete on an equal level with other services. Here in the states the price of mailing goes up nearly every year yet its still a money pit staying afloat only through government subsidy. Strikes arent going to change that, since it does nothing but increase peoples animosity towards the service. You cant strike your way to respect and success...only better efficiency and reliability can do that. I predict that within the next decade the postal service in most countries will be completely privatized its the only way it can continue effectively.

Got to agree with you there grapeape. But then again ya cant just let anyone walk all over you. Job cuts and less pay, and the your pension goin down the drain, you've got to make a stand sometime. Your right i think it will get privatized in the end, and the your service will get worse (than it probs is now).

Just hate it when people dis posties. We do enjoy our jobs and believe it or not want to give our customers the best quality of service we can. Its a bit hard tho when the top dogs are tryin to cut jobs just to give them selfs bigger bonuses.
Today we got all the MW 2 out. If you ordered from play.com you maybe still waiting as they moved to using Parcel Force. I got mine from Morrison's in the end for £26....bargin.
