really bad rrod help!!!!!!!!

hi i have tried to do the clamp fix and it just wont work i have spent 2 days on it now and its killing me, i have done the clamp fix before on a different 360 over a year ago and that is still going strong,

i have tried all different things from reflowing to baking it and nothing but for the first 2 attemps yesterday it went from 3 red lights to 1 and the e71 error shown on the screen, after that i tried again and 3 green lights where on but it only lasted a minute.

i didnt use artic silver compound thou as i found some gold compound which i was told is better (already used 2 lots) but i have also used some white thermal grease which is said to be for xbox's

any advice?????

Take the heatsinks off, clean the chips off and the heatsinks, put them back on without any thermal grease/paste. Turn on the 360 with the fan on to get it warmed up, then unplug the fan and leave it running for 20 minutes or until it auto shut's off from overheating, whichever comes first. Then remove the heatsinks after it cooled off some and reapply the thermal paste. Then let it cool down completely, it should work; if it doesn't don't take the heatsinks off. Just overheat it again as I described above.

That's what I did to fix my "Unfixable" RROD. I have been keeping this thing alive for so long and have tricks up my sleeves. I found something that will keep it going longer too. Some people cover the top of the heatsink with tape so it pulls air though instead of around. Don't do that, but alluminum tape. Regular tape holds in heat, alluminum tape dissperses it.

Hope that helped. (That is all stuff I have personally done myself. I have also done the 12v fan mod. You may have to run your 360 without the bottom white shell on, as some people such as myself do; just put on the top part that blocks the top of the metal shield)

What error codes do you get? cuz on mine I have 0020 and I can't seem to find good help to fix it.

I have fixed loads of 360's but one I did a year ago, no matter what I tried I could not get it to work. Slung it in a box and got it out last week to sell on ebay as spare parts.

I had a variety of errors inc 0002 and 0024 0020 and was getting pretty peeved.

Removed the whole lot and started just with the CPU to ensure I got that right.

I always use arctic silver, I attached the heatsink for the cpu only and just tighten enough to see the slack threads taken up and that bolts were still quite loose.

The GpU will over heat quickly, so you take a break in between each tightening of the cpu bolts. Each time you adjust the bolts cool it reboot and check the secondary error code.

You need to asses which side is at fault as no point overheating a GPU if the fault lies on the CPU side.

Once you get a code that relates to the GPU side. Tighten the CPU, check the code to see if it changed when you tightened it if not leave that one alone.

You will find a lot of codes have no meaning, only a guess. If you randomly adjust both at the same time you are pissing in the wind :O))

In the end it turned out the washers I was using for spacing were not good quality, the thickness varied and was causing the heatsinks to sit at an angle.
