EA's Warren Jensen recently pointed out that despite EA's skate launching on three fewer platforms, Skate actually managed to outsell Tony Hawk by 2 to 1.

Impressively, according to EA, EA Black Box's newcomer franchise Skate (PS3, X360) bested established competitor Tony Hawk's Proving Ground (PS2, PS3, X360, Wii, NDS) by a considerable margin. "Despite the fact we launched on three fewer platforms," CFO Warren Jensen pointed out, "Skate outsold Tony Hawk 2 to 1."

i had such high hopes for skate but i was let down. the control scheme is enough to make me not wanna play anymore. the right analog technique looks good on paper but when your playing its a headache. pushing down, half circle to the right then diagonally up for a trick is not only a dumb idea its almost impossible to pull of when your in a string of tricks. They should have atleast given you an option to make left and right foot pushes on the l and r trigger or bumpers. i understand the control scheme is what they were using as a new concept for skating games but to flat out give you no other choice leaves the best looking skating game ever as a missed hit for me

I personally loved skate and I'm glad to see a new franchise be as successful as it was against a stale Tony Hawk brand. I still think the Tony Hawk franchise can put out a good game and hopefully this competition will bring out the best in Neversoft.

...if not, there's always Skate 2! the vicious cycle begins again.

To bad it only outsold TH 2:1, cuz it was about 10 times better.

All you guys complaining about the controls are nuts...or 11.

Skate controls forced the game to be more realistic, sorry you couldn't do twist back-flips between rails during your 2 mile grind.

Oh well, both franchises can co-exist. TH is the arcade style, Skate is the sim style. I just hope TH starts doing it's style better, as it's formula is getting stale to me...

Personally I thought they where both rubbish.

Proving Ground is easily the worst in the Hawks series & Skate took me about half an hour to master an ollie.

27 bro, been playing games since intellivision controllers had plastic inserts. I didnt like the controllers and that doesn't mean everyone doesnt but it wouldnt have hurt to have different control options, any sort of customization could have helped but there was no flexibility what so ever

One of the comments above mentioned taking an hour and a half to learn to do an ollie...it didnt take me quite that long but thats exactly the reason I liked skate. I generally cant stand skating games but was given Skate so I tried out now I play it fairly regularly. Its rewarding in Skate to learn a new trick it feels like you actually acomplished something. In Tony Hawk there isnt that feeling, you can do some pretty insane stuff within minutes. The challenges of Tony Hawk are more based on where to skate than how to skate. I guess for those that want to feel like superman on wheels Tony Hawk is good choice but for me Skate actually felt like...learning to Skate.

totally agree. skate is about timing and control and if you aren't willing to sit down and learn those controls, then you shouldn't have video games as a hobby imo. furthermore, the level of difficulty created by the controls is what makes the game so good. it takes practice to nail a difficult trick, just like in real life. it does take a few tries to nail a trick, and this is true to life to any real skateboarder. it's the dedication to practice that makes a good skater in real life, and this game clearly sends that message.

on the other end of the spectrum is th, which is about button pushing and unrealistic bullshit. any noob can pick up the controls and can grind telephone cables within 10 minutes (if that) and that's what makes tony hawk a waste of time to me now. ok...i do have to give thps some props, because that's all there was at one time and there was nothing to compare it to. but now that we have a comparison, skate is 100x better in my eyes and is a breath of fresh air to those who skate in real life.

i skated for over 10 years and i know what it means to be persistant and how it feels to finally land a trick. i play games to escape reality and have a good time. i'm all about a good game and what not but that doesn't mean the difficult control is what should make the game difficult. the game should in itself be difficult. everybody has there own opinion and i am fine with who likes or hates it, i'm just saying that when you make a game that is pumped as a tony hawk killer then they should have a little more leniancy with the scheme especially if they are going after the hawk mans market
