View Full Version : No UT3 mods on 360 because MS fear losing control of Live

Mark Rein Co-founder of Epic games has said it is possible to get user created mods for Unreal Torunament, but MS haven't said if they will or won't let them yet. He agreed that a reason for this was that Microsoft fears losing control of Xbox Live. An example mod that the 360 was capable of is being able to play your own music while you play the game. He went on to say that if it doesn't work out, we may find a few of the best mods become available on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Are you any closer to resolving the problem of getting user-gen content into the Xbox 360 version?
Not yet but we're hopeful. Microsoft hasn't said "no" yet, but then they haven't said "yes" either. We need them to say "yes," and we need them to do it soon.

So it's technically possible?
Sure. I mean, you can go onto the console and copy your songs on to it and play movies off a memory card - the machine's capable of allowing you to transfer your content around, and even letting you play your music while playing many games.

So why wouldn't Microsoft say yes? Is there a fear of losing control of Xbox Live?
Well, yeah and we don't fault them for that. They've got a closed system where everything's checked, users know the quality of everything they download, and you know it won't crash your machine. User generated content - well, it can be dangerous, you could theoretically download a mod that uses too much memory and crashes your machine.

I think Sony are real pioneers in this - I think they deserve a lot of credit for letting us do this. They're really doing something different, and it hints at what they want to do with the PlayStation Network in the future. They're definitely on the right track!

If it doesn't work out with Xbox 360, depending on sales of the game on that platform, I imagine we'll find a few of the best mods and get them on Xbox Live Marketplace. I don't think 360 users are going to suffer drastically - they're just going to miss out on a lot of crazy, cool fun stuff and the ability to exchange it among themselves. They may also end up paying for content that is free on other systems because Microsoft now has to host it and certify it. But I'm confident Microsoft will look at what's happened with UT3 on the PS3 so far and think, 'Well, we'll take that baby step with you,' because what we've done so far really is just a baby step if you think about it. You've got to go online, you gotta download the mod, and you're responsible for putting it on your machine yourself. There are some exceptions - there are mutators, which modify how gameplay works, that are pretty small - and we let those auto download, but most of the other stuff you've got to go and say 'I'm going to install this on my machine.' We hope to change that in the future.

LOL pay for mod's and the money probably won't even go near the mod maker, unless MS is going to make their own mods.

This game just became a failure on the 360 to me. The only reason why i still have UT3 is for the cool mods someone will make.

Well, atleast you get to pay for the free maps!:D

Its already been a failure on the PS3 and PC with mods so how is adding mods to the 360 version going to make it a success?

apparently the game is pretty much done:

"The game is up and running on Xbox 360 - it has been for a long time, and its running wonderfully - it just doesn't have any Xbox Live written into it yet so that's the work that remains.

-Mark Rein"

i think microsoft just needs to allow this and go about business, this will not cause the downfall of xbox live and there are ways for them to control things, to an extent.

user created content is the only thing holding the title back, so microsoft should just 'jump in'.

This game is a flop. UT has always been a pc based game and the pc die hards blame the ps3 for why ut3 got dubbed down. Many fps don't have user made content and are great games. If the game is great it doesn't need it to justify the purchase. See COD4! Ill bet money ut3 doesnt outsell cod4. Why because cod4 is a great game and ut3 is decent at best.

PC gamers dont even like this game and they are the die hard ut fans. Even without user made content the xbox 360 version will still outsell the ps3 version. :p

It's not, he just doesn't wanna tell you the real reason, it's becuase for once MS won't be making as much money if they did this, Epic should just stop making games for 360, they themselves love the free to play concept, they can charge $15 a month for people to play UT3 online and those people would but they aren't for charging people to play online. This is the reason I got my UT3 for PS3 and not for 360.

Mark Rein seems to have nothing to do but QQ over this issue every day. This is like the 10th time this has been posted. Stop whining and release the damn game already.

I don't see how this is going to be done unless MS allows user servers for the game, because to run the mod you need to host the server that has the mod running, I would like to see Epic getting this done... not private matches but public user games... hehe, just hope that they bring out the third person view cam, it's just awesome :) like Gears of War but in better quality and custom maps :D

figures... ms likes to maintain control of everything. Thats y they made the xbox instead of just publishing games like normal software companies. But thats what monopizing companies do.

control is reason # 7 of why Microsoft is evil

but it still saddens me as a fan of ut3
Microsoft bite the bullet really
but it will all mean nothing if there is no cross platform play and i meen 360=ps3=pc i dream of that day mabey after both consols are hacked to hell multi platform lan games would be nice at the verry least

Haha!! I just got this on PC though I won't be able to play it until April when a New PC is in my posession.

Also have the PS3 version too! Its a shame and I think a reason like this is why the PSN is going to take off very soon!

Even without user made content the xbox 360 version will still outsell the ps3 version.

Unfortunetly, just like the same scenario of everyone buying the shitter PS3 version of Pro Evolution Soccer, the 360 version is much cleaner. I don'y know why the hell you have to blame Sony for dubbing down UTIII on Xbox 360 for? Blame Xbox Live! lol

Well this is why Microsoft should never ever bring out a handheld to the market because it won't be exploitable and everything thats on it, you will have to pay for it AKA going online will cost you 50 bucks on a handheld and LIVE and DLC will cost us money.

This is why Microsoft should not bring out a handheld or else it will destroy handheld games as we know it like the 360 destroying consoles in the pay to play online crap.

I mean the PS3 and wii, you can go online for FREE and you can do it with the DS AND PSP aswell but we will never be able to have free online on a microsoft handheld because they want your money.

I loved Microsoft but now everything is a cash cow. I mean pay for new extra characters in such and such game like paying 3 dollars for 2 extra characters to play as.

Xbox 360, you cant hack it unless you wanna be banned. Same things gonna happen to there handheld, if they truly bring it out.

I think its possible for mods on PS3 cause its more like a computer, I mean it has linux and such already on it.

As crap as this game is.. and i very much do blame the ps3 version for the pc version being royally sh** ms do have a point.
They have seen first hand of a retail disc de-constructed one text file altered and access gained to live with an advantage in said game.
They have seen what happens when you stick action replay max or codebreaker in machines then go online.
Despite the kernel downgrade there are still less exploits on the 360 than the ps3 and thats how they want it to stay.

Ms don't want to release firmwares every month or patch holes like the rsx access exploit, They don't want more games like king-kong and resistance to open up more doors.
Caring about the integrity of your network is better than leaving everyone to glitch in warhawk for weeks then just patching it instead of removing users.

I had it for pc also. I was a die hard ut pc fan. But There is bareky anyone playing this game. The mod community is mute at best compared to what it was in ut2k4. If you go back, you would see i was a big supporter of ut3 also. I thought it was gonna be ps3`s equal to halo 3. Then the pc beta came out. Like a train wreck that never stopped crashing. The final release came and was met with by the same complaints. If user made content was the complaint then i can see blaming live and microsoft. But the game itself is the complaint. The controls where better in ut2k4 and where dubbed down for the ps3. The sp is a freaking bot match (no one makes fps with that anymore). I was very disappointed to see ut3 flop the way it did on pc and on ps3 (mainly on pc). I like epic studios and think they deserve a big payday.
But its clear when you look at stats the pc gamers are playing cod4 and not ut3.
I do think the xbox 360 version will outsell the ps3 version based off xbox 360 usually does really good sells on fps`ers. If that trend cont. then it should do decent. It wont do gears numbers in any case. But expect to see xbox 360 owners complaining as well when this game comes out (unless they are new to the ut series.)

Gears of war is now epics main franchise title. So the hope begins gears 2 will live up to the standard 1 set.

They are blaming the PS3 because it cant handle many of the mods that modders initially intended. The few PC mod that were released resulted in a flood of PS3 fans harassing the modders to the point of many being rude about it when in reality there wasnt much that could be done on the modders side short of cutting things down on the PC side to get it to fit. As a result most of the expected reliable modders dropped the game like a hot potato and moved on to Crysis and other PC only games. At this point there are few mods coming out and the ones that are come mostly from PS3 users first attempts at modding on the PC.

As far as the 360 thing goes, there is probably a bit more to this than MS not wanting to loose control. MS announced their silver support platform last year which allows a developer to host and maintain their own infrastructure and when announced modding for UT3 was specifically mentioned as the intention of what could be done with it. Most likely its money thing and Epic either doesnt want cost and responsibility of maintaining it themselves. If Epic knows they can sell close to the same amount without the added work of maintaining it themselves why would they bother with the added expense for little return? I dont like it, but I cant blame them for thinking that way.

Can sombody in detail explain how the PC version was "dumbed" down because of PS3, Ect.?

Sombody mentioned controlls. I have the PC demo, the controls are the same, I think there is just a dodge missing or something.

Sombody mentioned controlls. I have the PC demo, the controls are the same, I think there is just a dodge missing or something.

The reason is the 360 owners don't get to have the user-created content like the PS3 ones do, so they claim to own the PC version and rant off on the PS3 version for what the PC has or doesn't have. The PS3 version does nothing to the PC version, the PS3 one just got turned down 20% of the speed but the PC version is still at 100%, the user mods are different than the PC mods, some mods can't come to the PS3 but can for the PC, so the PS3 hasn't done anything, and are probably mad that Epic chose not to make it a "Games for Windows" title and have it run off of Live to pay to play... The 360 has good online but stuff like this just makes PSN better, MS is a greedy company, they are american. They try to get as much as they can out of you, Mark Rein said himself that MS chooses the price, meaning that none of this money goes toward Epic, it's all MS. And MS runs off Live, one crash in Live all the servers go down, meaning that all the money got from those games playing online GO TOWARDS MS not the developers or the publishers, PSN is ran by Sony, CoD4 is ran off of Infinity Wards servers, Insomaniac off of Insomaniac servers, no games that aren't developed or published by Sony run off of one server like Live is.

But Yami, you're wrong on one thing, all consoles are like computers, Sony just took the chance to allow Linux to be installed for users to run it, 360 can run it and nintendo can run it, it's just the their choice to let you run it or not, I don't see how the PS3 hasn't been hacked already with them allowing Linux to be ran but they did the right choice and actually help YDL make a PS3 friendly Linux, so they made sure that it's secure.
