View Full Version : Microsoft game limit size causing problems for Street Fighter
Developer Backbone has said that the 150MB Xbox Live download limit is giving them problems with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix. They are struggling to fit HD graphics and remixed music as well as the original music into the 150MB limit calling it "difficult or impossible". This has led to concerns that there may be differences between PS3 and 360 versions.

When asked whether the 360 download limit was causing any problems, Sirlin said: "Yes, it's difficult to store so many 1080p graphics in such a small download size. A lot depends on the specific shading that the final art will have, and how well that shading compresses. It also makes it difficult or impossible to include all the original game's music AND all remixed set of music. We're still doing our best to fit within the limit we've been given."
Sirlin said: "In my opinion, one of the worst ideas inflicted on the Shoryukening gaming public was Sony's idea to turn the d-pad into four buttons with no diagonal piece. I hated it on the PlayStation. I hated it on the PlayStation 2. I hate it on the PlayStation 3. Microsoft's d-pad has a much better shape (including the diagonals) and yet somehow, it isn't any better in practice. There's something amiss about the mechanism underneath the Xbox 360's d-pad that makes it mysteriously imprecise. My final tally is that both d-pads tie for badness.
"This is at least part of the reason why some special moves are more forgiving in SSF2T:HD Remix. You should have an easier time using a d-pad in this game than in other Street Fighters such as SF2: Hyper Fighting, but if you really want to be a pro, my best advice is to get an arcade-style stick. I've been using the Hori DOA and VF5 Xbox 360 sticks throughout the development of the game."

I dont understand the size limits, I mean demo's for normal games are about 1gig + and nobody complains about them. Nobody is on 56k anymore so why cap the file size at 150?
I guess they dont want to isolate the arcade users, but I cant see many not buying seperate HDD's anyway...

If they can't fit the entire game into the 150meg limit maybe they should deliver the game without the old school music and include the old school music in a seperate download pack.

Wasnt the original idea to fit an entire XBLA game on a memory card before they had the big one?
Uh, MS you better not let Sony get the upper hand in this game.

I dont really understand the limit either...I thought MS had said it was going to be flexable with that when they announced that Silver Support server platform last year? Maybe its limited to XNA 2.0? Either way its rather silly concidering I can download an entire Xbox game now that is several gigs...

This just proves that XBLA, and Xbox 360 in general, are crappy rubbish :(

I'm not sure how it was Sony's idea to "turn the d-pad" into only 4 buttons. Last I checked, the original NES had a 4-way d-pad with no diagonals. As did the SNES. Sega had the diagonals, but I don't remember those being all that much "better"...probably much like how the 360 controller isn't any better than the PS3 one (for diagonal d-pad controllling) now.
I think in any case, for fighting games, if you don't pick up a control stick, what's the point?

I don't see the big deal. This isn't the first time the size limit of XBLA games have come into question. Last time, M$ just bumped the size limit up. Do you all not expect them to do this again? It's either bump it up or give your competition something to gloat about. You know that M$ will most likely just bump the limit up to whatever they need for the game or just give them the right to bypass the limit for this release. I hope they go with just letting them release the game the way they want to release it.

I'm sure MS will bump the size limit. I still don't get why they try to put a limit on the amount of memory. I mean wtf? even with the lowest dsl and cable you can download it in 30 minutes.

I thought it was so the games could fit on one memory card. But even that doesn't make any sense. Like you said, it is very odd.

Good **** MS... Go ahead and release it on the PSN so we can get to playing. Stupid downloading rules because of no Standard HD shouldn't stop others from playing a game the way its meant to be played.

i've been extremely unhappy with xbox Live the past few weeks. i bought a 360 strictly to play 2d fighters on live and all i've gotten is massive lag and terrible service from microsoft. all they do to make it up is give us some gay ass undertow game that i dont give a **** about. if they are now going to do this to people i'm for sure moving to the ps3 network, which imo has a better set up anyways.

the idea behind the limit is to allow people without hard drives to still able to fit an xbox live arcade title (not demos or other stuff) onto a memory card if they want to purchase an xbla title. once the demo limit was 50mb, then microsoft released the larger memory cards and raised the limits to 150mb.
this only applies to xbla only and is microsofts way of supporting those without hard drives.
eventually microsoft will lift the limit once all the skus come with hard drives, or microsoft will release much larger memory cards and increase the limits to 256mb.
sony doesn't do this cause all their skus come with hard drives.

Sirlin is a buffoon. The PS d-pad is not 4 buttons, it is only one piece.
If you've disassembled it before, you'll see that it is one piece. As you press down the left direction, you'll see the right direction lift up, meaning you are tipping the one piece.
And in practice, it works far better than the piece of crap Xbox 360 d-pad. That thing is very imprecise.

You put no more limit and then you are pretty much making memory cards useless and forcing your customers to buy HDD's.
I doubt the public would take that very well.
How much is a 20GB HDD for the 360? I heard the Arcade + Used 20GB HDD is the cheapest and best way to go. Might have to give in eventually as my girlfriends laptop won't play Viva Pinata.
Either way though, I will still post about how it is made like ****. ;)

It pays the choice of the double layer, and not Hd-Dvd.

The fact remains that there is no diagonals on playstation D-pads. It can make performing some moves, like the Hadoken, and the Shoryuken especially, more difficult.

I'm getting the PS3 version but the limit is stupid! I see why developers are liking the PSN. I believe Eidos or someone relating to creating Tomb Raider said they like the fact the PSN file rescrictions are non existant and its good for user created content.
Microsoft are going to have to increase the limit. If you can think they can fit 1080p Graphics, Arranged and Original Soundtracks and the game itself into a 150MB file.....good luck!

you are 100% correct, the d-pad on the 360 controller is horrible and very inaccurate, to me this is the only downfall of the 360 controller.

the size limit is only on arcade titles only, not game addons. there are some very good arcade titles that are just under 50mb already, alot can be done with 150mb with the proper coding and a good programmer.....so this leaves all the windows development team out ;)

i've got both xbox 360 and ps3 right now i'm going to get the ps3 version. the only thing i am scared of is that more pros will be on the xbox Live version as I've seen tons of good players on sf2 hyper fighting on there. If we will see a stripped down 360 version i hope everyone runs to the ps3 for online. also after everyone's 1 year of Live is up it'll be questionable of who will renew.
