View Full Version : Lost Odyssey review declares it is the Xbox 360's best RPG to date

UK's 360 Magazine (published by Imagine) has conducted the first ever UK review on Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360 and declare that it is the Xbox 360's best RPG so far. They indicate that each of the four discs hold around ten hours worth of play and many instances of voice dialogue and cut scenes so therefore Lost Osyssey can be viewed as an epic. Final score - 4/5.

"The four dics each hold around ten hours' worth of play, and many minutes of voiced dialogue and cut-scenes, so Lost Odyssey can be regarded as an epic. And there's also the surreptitious delivery of 'A Thousand Years of Dreams', which can be viewed as a digital book in it's own right. In terms of play for pound (or dollars if you're American), Lost Odyssey is more generous than most."

"Definitely a story well told and a reasonably well produced RPG, Lost Odyssey is rooted in the genre's traditions but ultimately succeeds thanks to the strength of it's fantastic storytelling. Battles are satisfyingly difficult and there's four discs' worth of game to play through. It can be a bit heavy, a bit like 'War and Peace', but Lost Odyssey is well worth a look if you're after a Japanese RPG with staying power."

Final Score Given: 4 stars out of 5

But then you wouldn't get all the best games, sorry but out of the 100's of 360 games how many require you to swap disc's? let's face it it's not really that big an issue.

Well said, lets get the product with the worst game lineup because of the 100's of titles on the 360 2 of them make you swap discs. That point of view is so far askew I can't believe that he even bothered posting that drivel.

and if you pull your head out of your assess you will see swapping discs in not the only issue(think about that and answer)

Hm...

I was kind of hoping for a dark/mature japanese RPG for once, without all this anime cliche'd bullcrap only weaboos enjoy for the hundredth time (look: nearly all PS2 jRPG's).

You know, being a fan of old Squaresoft, back from their SNES/PSX era. Chrono Trigger/Cross, FF4-FF9, Xenogears and all...

But it seems from most of the newer trailers they have changed the overall overtone of the game to more colorful with that horrible pop-anime feeling.

Haven't played it yet, so this is just a prejudice.
It could actually turn out quite the opposite.

exactly. it kind of amazes me how Oblivion also looks better than this other garbage as well as Blue Dragon and it requires more than 2 discs. The movie are not even TRUE HD as well. i don't know but if this all what 360 has to offer, i'll never get it. Banjo is still nowhere to be announced, and NG II cannot be my only reason to get a 360. I was looking forward to this one but as of now, with all the clips, there's really nothing new. White Night Story is doing it better.

Or Eternal Sonata I'm going to hold fire on this game I've got Eternal Sonata to get through and I really should do the last few levels of SMG, other than that I really can't be bothered to play games anymore I was hyped about GTA: IV, but I just have a feeling it's going to suck like most GTA games, excluding GTA: SA I quite liked that!

Other than the SSB Brawl is on my list and FF13, and when my mate give back my copy of Mass Affect that I have yet to even play I might have a go at that.

Hey! Try adding him to the ignore list! I did, but apparently that doesn't stop idiots like you from quoting him. As a result I have to read his crap anyway. But if you add him to the ignore list, you don't have to read all the crap, and you won't quote him. Even I would feel better if you added him to your ignore list!

PS. Don't take the idiot-part to serious, you are not supposed to, but I guess you understand that ;)

.. I saw the gameplay. It's a throw back to FF VII/ VIII... as much as I respect Sakaguchi, after FF X there's no turning back. The pace of the battles have to be fast and Lost Odyssey went back two FF generations to bring back the very boring "attack/ wait for attack/ animation that repeats a hundred times plays, next character now gets ready, next character attacks, blah blah" 10-45 minute battles.

I hate to say I am skipping this game, I have no time for that. A pity because I am sure the art and music will be amazing.

I think there is definately a divide between FF fans, I know a couple who agree with you, but I know many who found FFX to be pure crap, I havent touched a FF game since X (I have FFXII collectors edition sitting on the shelf still in shrinkwrap, got it two christmases ago and just cant get enthused enough to even look at it). If this is going back to old school FF style jrpg, its moving from my cautiously maybe list to must buy.

I'm a great fan of RPG's and in my opinion from what I've seen so far it's only looking average but at least something else besides a shooter genre game is being anticipated. My current rating is 3/5.

My thoughts exactly.
Final Fantasy X was indeed pure crap.

So are all the other Square-Enix games (except maybe Kingdom Hearts, for that warm and fuzzy Disney nostalgia).

I can understand if someone didn't like FFX, but the pacing of the combat is WAY superior to the other FF's. It's this what Lost Oddysey should have gone for and from all videos I have seen so far, they didn't.

I don't know about you but rather than to watch 30 second summons, I rather play the game!

oblivion? there's freedom and there's too much freedom. that's what spoils it. i say take it back to the days of the original baldurs gate and fallout-style rpg's. the only rpg's that match that kind of standard now are made by bioware.

i have seen no actual RPG's on either the ps3, 360 or wii that make me think: "wow. i have to get that" (apart from mass effect possibly) and the reason for that is that i'd rather get on the computer and play fallout. that's all console rpg's are now, mostly crap.

Your actually pretty accurate on that one...Oblivion is the first RPG I have ever played where I got so sidetracked just wondering around and finding stuff that I completely managed to forget what I was supposed to be looking for in the first place, I eventually had to resort to finding a walkthru just to figure out exactly where in the game I was. :) I still enjoyed it though.

Does seem a little off, doesn't it. And that, with the PS3 becoming more and more shooter-heavy.

It does prove my theory sort of that a lower install bas e and lower attach rate (the latter likley to be more important) means less variation and more low risk games. That usually means FPS and Sports games like with the Xbox1. Larger install base and high attach rate means more variation and more risky games relaesed as the high install/attach rate makes it so that even if these games ell in smaller numbers that still make a profit like the PS2.

At present the 360 has a library more comparbale with the PS2 and the PS3 has more in common with the xbox, Nintendo stays the same one gen to the next, thank god for nintendo reliability :D

Anyway, I will wait and see on this one. i am still waiting on a japanese RPG that can recapture the magic of the PS1 era. If this can do it I will certainly add it to my collection.

got to agree with you there, same for morrowind. While I say in hind sight dagerfall was not beter as such, it offered everything more or less the later games have. It was just down to the later games to build on that, which sadly has only been possible with some very good mods and the official addon's (the original games always seem to sparse and empty for me)

Well, I guess I am the complete opposite of you guys.. I just loved FFX and even enjoyed playing FF-VIII very much.

And I sure can't see where is the offense in pointing out to "blu-ray does it all" fanatics how their superior format lacks matching superior games. Promises of promises just don't cut it against a finished and proven product.

Don't blame the xbots for pointing out the obvious.. Instead start demanding Sony to put their act together and make their recent gaming hardware worthy of the "PlayStation" brand!

Though your memory doesn't fail you, most of the time they used the in-game engine to tell the story.

Yet for the forseeable future it has far more RPG's than the console that has traditionally been the brand to own for RPG's. RPG's are what I bought my PS3 for and so far all I have to show for it is...well nothing. Folklore is more of a pokemon type action game than an rpg and I already had Oblivion and Enchanted Arms. The rest is all vaporware until it ships IMHO.

I agree. The majority of gamers must like Final Fantasy, otherwise how else would it have reached it's thirteenth installment.

I also agree that they are delaying next-gen RPG gaming and they better reveal some launch dates or new info in this year's E3, mainly for me Kingdom Hearts and Valkyrie Profile 3.

The only games I'm anticipating soon are Disgaea 3 and FF7: Crisis Core.
