I have a wiikey and its worked fine for a few weeks. I did the 1.9 upgrade for SMG and it worked fine for about a week. Now my wii will only read one of the four originals I own - Excite Truck. My backups for these same games don't work either. None of the setup or update discs for the wiikey read.

When Installing the wiikey, the clip that holds the ribbon cable broke, so I figured the ribbon had come loose. That wasnt the case the ribbon was ok, and since Excite Truck original loads, i figure that can't be the problem.

Should I remove the wiikey to see if all my originals start working, and if they do just get a new wiikey? Its an original - got it from foundmy.com.

From what I know this is most likely due to a fake chip. I assume you upgraded to 1.9g ? Replacing the chip has been known to work fine.

Yeah, I did upgrade to 1.9g. I'll contact foundmy and see if they will ship me a new chip. It looks just like the originals and came with the hologram sticker thing.

if it was fake it wouldn't have worked at all. most likely the chip broke or the soldering has come off. reinstall it or install a new one (properly)

It would certainly work fine, they just dont upgrade, thats the problems with them.

Giving the guy advice of reinstalling it properly is ludicruous. If it wasnt installed properly it wouldnt have worked at all in the few weeks when he was playing his games.

So I took off the chip and now it wont read anything at all. I guess the drive is fried. Looks like I will be shopping ebay for a replacement drive.:(

i am pretty sure that your drive is not dead.

As you were explaning the problem, the chips are disabled, so all your backups should work.

I think the problem is that the lens in the wii is covered with dirt. If you could clean it off then it might work. Also if you are unsure about it just search the forums. But if it turns on then it is not dead, it is just a lens problem.

what i'm saying here is that the chip might have broken down or the soldering has gone downhill. so reinstalling another chip is not a ridiculous idea.
A fake chip will not cause a breakdown on its own. Like you said, the crappy clones cannot be upgraded. But they do not break down when you try to update at all. They just stay where they were before. Therefore, something broke.

You say that the clip that holds the ribbon cable broke off. How can you be sure that the cable is connecting properly to the board? It may look like it is, but if there's not enough pressure applied to the ribbon it may fail you on that.

Yeah.. I agree.. I ca almost garuntee you if you have broke the ribbon connecter, this is the area you should focus on.. Seeing how its impossible to fix them, you have two choices order a new drive, or order a new connector and replace it.

yeah, well half of it broke off, but it was secure enough to hold it for 3 weeks. when i removed the chip, the rest of it broke off, so yeah i just got a new drive and will try and sell my dms drive to anyone that wants to resolder that ribbon connector.

I have had success with ribbon cable connectors by shoving a credit card type of plastic(sanded down)in place of the old lever. Just cut it to EXACT length and shove it in between the ribbon cable and the top shell of connector. Careful here. If the plastic is to thick, it can crack the outer casing of the connector; and just as shitty.... if to thin it wont do ****... Then one can apply a small spot of glue to secure it from vibrations. Try it, might be able to save it... however... if it were me, i'd buy a new drive.
