Is this a fake wiikey and how exactly do you end up with a bricked wii?

Hi i'm new to the forums so please be gentle :D

Ok so i know that wiis can be chipped etc. But how does a console actually end up bricked? Does it depend on the type of chip and combination of software on the wii and the chip firmware?

Also i recently bought a chip from HK but i think i've been jipped. The guy said it was an original but i have reason to believe it's fake. I've looked at a few pictures of original wiikeys and the main differences are that the c1 and c2 lettering on the pcb is the wrong way. The tiny chip next to R3 has the number 102 on it (you can't see it in the pic, but i checked with a magnifying glass), the dodgy looking wiikey stamp on the back and general crappy looking crafting of the actual pcb. What do you guys think?

I should have researched more before buying as i didn't even know there were fakes floating about :/

Yep, looks like a fake to me...

With regards to bricking, yes you just need to be careful with what software you run and when you run it. i.e. don't try and run an ntsc game disc that includes a wii firmware update when your wii is a pal console. Things like that really.

Common sense is all you need, I'm yet to run into problems :)

The best way to avoid a brick is to have your system on the most current firmware update. And Metroid Prime Corruption requires the original disc to be run before a backup can be used.

And yes, it appears that the wiikey you were sold is a counterfeit. But it should work as wiikey hasn't cracked down on fakes yet or maybe ever. If you are concerned you could always try modchipstore.

Not true ..... you can run the required update from a backup disc

as you can see you still have the atmega8l chip that is also on the real wiikey.
if it works and can update, then you have no need to worry.
