My Wii doesnt spin the discs. They insert/eject just fine. Once inserted the laser clicks and trys to focus but the disc does not spin.
If I manually rotate the disc occasionally it will start to spin up. (So it is not a fuse issue)
So my questions to further my investigation:
1) Should the disc spin before focusing? Meaning does the laser focus and then spin the disc? (perhaps my laser wont focus and as such doesnt spin the disc)
or
2) Does the disc spin first and then the laser gets focus. which would mean something with the motor not moving the disc without my help to get it going.
Any other suggestions would be great as I have an 8 year old who is dying to play GH3.....

Did you try loosening the screws of the drive and/or playing a disc with cover off?
Sounds like waaaay too tight drive to me.

I did take the drive further apart and got the drive to spin. However a minute or two later the whole wii stopped working. No lights, noise, nothing.
Any ideas what would cause that????
I left it unplugged and plugged it back in an hour later and still no lights or sounds.
Suggestions?

Sounds like a blown fuse now.... you either have a short or an overload.

I have the same problem, but...
When I start the Wii, the disc is spinning. Then I eject and change disc. Then nothing happens.
BUT if I then turn the power of and on again it almost everytime starts to spin the disc.
This happened to me after attaching a D2Ckey chip to my Wee.
Today I removed everything to original but the problem still exist.
I got a feeling that when inserting a disc "online", the dvd-rom doesnt pull the disc all the way in because i dont hear the "click".
A ordinary dvd-rom for computers has an selftest that pull everything in if it isn't. Perhaps a simmilar phenomenon?
Is there any fuses you guy are aware of? first I thought that it was the sensors on the dvd, but it injects the disc so I dont think its that.
Please let me know if anyone has any more suggestions. I will try to borrow another Wii and shift the "electronics" on the DVD.

Check if the pins in the power connector on the drive (the white block) are still correctly aligned. I once had a lot of problems with a drive and it turned out one of the pins was bent and did not make contact. A little fiddling with a needle to get it aligned again and everything worked perfectly again..

My problem is solved now...
I borrowed a microscope connected to a 21" monitor and searched for problems at 30-40x zoom ;)
I found a resistor that was broken. (Point X on the backside)
After replacing that everything works.
