The NY Times has awarded Mass Effect the best game of the year award. Elsewhere BioShock won best newcomer, best single handed resce of a major game system went to Ratchet & Clank and most difficult delivery went to E3 amongst other awards.

GAME OF THE YEAR: MASS EFFECT Story and characters aren’t everything, but these components of narrative have always been the weakest part of video games. For decades games have made up in frenetic action what they have lacked in dramatic depth. And that is a big reason why games have traditionally appealed most strongly to the demographic group that most enjoys frenetic action: young men. In its choice of milieu — science fiction — Mass Effect is not ambitious at all. But with its focus on character development, personal growth and moral tension, all fueled by a graphics system created to evoke emotional empathy, Mass Effect points the way forward. It may be a harbinger of a time when story and character are as important to video games as explosions.

in 2 more years there will be good games! ;)

But seriously... mass effect is a great game and a lot of fun but im not sure it deserves game of the year. I can see it being considered but like halo 3 i just dont think it was the best overall game of the year. Still its a great must own title though.

I really want Mass Effect. However, Ratchet & Clank looks good too. I'm missing those sort of games on the 360, I'll probably pick up a PS3 before next xmas.

BRILLIANT without doubt Mass Effect is GOTY, it's my choice for number one closely followed by Mario Galaxy & then Bioshock :D been a great year for 360 & Wii but I am very disappointed with my PS3 the only thing I have used it for all year is watching Blu-Ray movies

While not being the best "roleplaying" experience, Mass Effect is truly the most cinematic RPG experience I've ever had.

GOTY for me.

I can name two that I have that are good but not great: Resistance and Motorstorm. Neither of those even comes close to the quality that I can find on the other two systems however.

umm there the great games ??? LMAO Resistance I really liked but nowhere near GREAT and the others well Motorstorm I thought was very average & short arcade racer, heavenly sword was just another button masher, uncharted I was so looking forward to until I played the demo & found the character moves like he's skating on ice & is just a very poor clone of Tombraider, Ratchet & Clank is a fucking joke which reminds me of the old Crash Bandicoot games which gives you no freedom you just have to go one path & you can't explore anything, UT3 is just like all previous releases & warhark is just a online shooter.
Now for the Wii, I have thoroughly enjoyed the new Metroid had great fun playing with my kids with Mario Party, Paper Mario, Brain Challenge, fun for my whole family just to name a few plus Mario Galaxy was AWESOME, all these Wii games where innovative & just plain fun. And the Xbox 360 well that has been brilliant as well I have thoroughly enjoyed Mass Effect,Bioshock,Halo 3, Orange Box, Forza 2, PGR4, The Darkness to just name a few, and you think the PS3 had games to match these ??? you are a complete moron, I own a PS3 and would love to see great games come out for it, but this year it has been **** compared to the Wii & 360.

Can we have a truce for one freakin day...so Mass Effect got some kudos from what I understand its conversational AI was ground breaking enough that many other developers are now licensing it for their own games across multiple platforms, in the end that will benefit us all.

I want to know what makes these games so crappy, was it the amazing graphics? The indepth narratives in both games? the intense shooter action on Bioshock? Or is the RPG element of Mass Effect lacking? Because come on seriously Bioshock has recieved so many awards for its graphics and story, but it doesnt have online thats the only let down and as far as I can see. Mass Effect is following up to recieve similar awards. I'm totally non-biased when it comes to games but calling those games crappy makes you blind AND crazy. (possibly a little retarded ¬.¬)

Mass Effect is my favorite game of the year, and well deserving to be nominated for GOTY in my opinion. With that being said though, didn't the same publication state recently that the 360 was powered by the Cell processor, and list several major exclusive titles as being some of the best titles available for the wrong systems?

In the end, someone from a major publication shared their opinion a game which got an overall approval rating of 91.8% on gamerankings and 91% on metacritic to be GOTY.

I think The darkness came out for the ps3 as well...I might be mistaken, but i'm almost positive that it did.

BUt i think the 360 had the best games this year also. But ps3 is catching up i think. It's not a "what are you going to play if you get it" console anymore. Lot's of multiplatforms avaiable and a few exclusives make it worth getting it.

I'm just a bit disappointed with the blu-ray movies. Okay they are HD and all, but hd-dvd as a lot more cool features. Blu-ray seems like a HD version of a dvd, as opposed to hd-dvd that really innovates in terms of features. I got transformers for xmas and it blew me away. Not only it had great built in features, you can actually download content for the movie and add more stuff on the fly... Now thats something!

mass effect is a flawed masterpiece but it is the freshest game of the year by far. It has a better story and presentation than bioshock, but it has more flaws as well. Overall i consider it more interesting than bioshock and therefore i enjoyed it more.

Well I have all 3 systems and I play the Wii the least of the 3. IMO It's success will ultimately be It's down fall. It's selling so well most developers just want to make a quick dollar.80% of there line up Is straight shovelware. The system has more crap In the first year than the ps1 and ps2 had In there fist year.
