View Full Version : Interesting Xbox 360 PC case mod puts that RRoD to constructive use
A tech blog has conducted a feature on an interesting Xbox 360 PC case mod which integrates a 3.0GHz intel processor, 60GB HDD, a red fan and 8 USB ports. Some of the lesser specs include 512MB RAM and integrated graphics. So if you ever can't be bothered to send back your RRoD 360 back to MS for repair, perhaps this modification will capture your imagination.

When my original 2005 Xbox 360 finally succumbed to the dreaded Red Rings of Death, it ended up going on the scrap heap. This enterprising modder showed a bit more creativity than I could muster by turning his overheating Xbox lemons into a souped-up glass of PC lemonade.

I saw this video yesterday and i'm seriously considering buying a 360 shell and doing this mod. I have a shuttle SN25P so my motherboard is half the size needed which will give a lot more room to work with. Preferably due to the size of the motherboard i'd have a lot more space to work with and could integrate the power supply inside the case. Preferably I wouldn't have any of the PC sockets exposed and i'd route all the outputs to the 360 AV and power socket. (dvi port and audio). And i'd use USB instead of serial for the keyboard and mouse.
The biggest problem I see is lack of graphics card. The PC is pretty useless without one.
You could work around the problem by using a PCI-X riser card like one of these:

Then you could add a modern graphics card to make the PC more functional. Anyway I'm definitely considering this for the new year :)

With the power supply outside it's a total mess.

Meh....
I dont see the point! i mean yeh good effort....but its not that great!
Gotta sort out that psu! The xbox hd should be an additional drive and not the boot in my opinion...could probably fit an biiger hd inside the case if your smart with the spacing.
But yeah...fair play.

So let me see he went from a console that can play COD4, Gears, .... Now instead he has a PC with worst specs that can't play any of those games. A lot of good 32mb shared intel graphics are going to do.

Its kinda awesome , but except for fun of modding , why would anyone put a pc into such a box of the death ? The shell of the console itself might not be , or rather isnt , but the process is still in a nutshell putting something quite heat sensitive , into a piece of hardware that often die of overheating .

Now, I would like a case mod to replace the XBOX 360 case to a PC case and also in that way lower the heat of the machine. That would be nice if someone makes a different designed new style case with different locations of fans to lower the heat and minimize the RRoD.
Is there something like this available??

the whole point is that it is a rrod 360 and so cannot play any games

the whole point is that it is a rrod 360 and so cannot play any gamesSo you fix the thing for like $10 like many people have done. If your to lazy to go to home depot to pick up the parts, you can go here http://www.x-clamp-fix.com/catalog/product_info.php?info=p5_X-Clamp-Fix-DIY-Kit.html and it's $15. You can't tell me this person isn't handy enough to handle that.
To me the project looks like a downgrade not a upgrade. If you want to make a HTPC then just buy a shuttle case.

already done this. except that i rewired **** so that the vga-out was where normally the xbox-360 video cable has to be plugged etc.
he just took a motherboard and dumped it into the 360, big deal.

Wow! Great indeed! If my X360 cannot be fixed from its 2RL, that's a interesting option.

You've contradicted yourself. You said the 360 shell isn't the problem, but then say that it will be a problem if you put a PC into it.
Also, the real cause of the RROD isn't actually overheating, it's the GPU becoming disconnected because of X-Clamp failure. If it was simply overheating, after it cooled off it would work again however most RROD's don't ever work again.
