View Full Version : New MS DRM patent prevents you from skipping ads in download videos
Microsoft has very recently filed a new patent which will stop you from skipping adverts in videos that you downloaded and watch on your computer and presumably the Xbox 360. The method uses DRM to prohibit any kind of playback until you have watched the required amount of adverts. The patent is available to view at uspto.gov.

Well that is true :) but the patent doesn't necessarily apply to XBL or the 360. The main focus seems to be Windows media player but the patent covers all sorts of devices, applications and delivery methods. Considering Microsoft bought a huge stake in faceparty advertising it's hardly surprising that Microsoft don't want people skipping their ads which they (or other companies) are paying them to display.

if the stuff you downloaded with adds was free then it's fair game. if it's something you paid for then it's just one more reason to look for pirated stuff.

i think it may be for the upcoming iptv, a way to guarantee adverts are being watched. Its a good idea if it means free to view content, but knowing microsoft........

Haven't had to watch an ad yet myself, but if I ever do, the amount of content on Live justifies it for me.

I think MS currently and will generate enough money from Adverts alone to make XBL subscriptions free but being the greedy bastards they are they'll continue to rob the consumer for everthing they have.

First the Fan Ban scandal and now this. You WILL NOT modify you're own hard worked for console and you WILL watch our adverts!
I have no objections at all if this means free content, but that is unlikely if M$ have anything to do with it. What makes all of this even worse is the fact that you have to pay for XBOX LIVE in the first place.
I own a PS3 and I have to say, I'm very happy with the PSN free and open approach. I was really tempted by the 150 pound offer in Gamestation for a 360 Arcade but after this afternoons posts I think I will pass. I honestly see the console as having great exclusives but those games are tragically outweighed by cronic unreliability and also having to pay for all the extras I require such as wifi and somewhere to store music, clips or DLC.

I don't see what the big deal is. Microsoft might be planning ad supported movies and TV shows for people that don't want to buy them.

Way to pay attention, no where does the article mention the 360...DVD's have had non-skippable advertising for over a decade and people still buy them. I really dont get the whining...if folks dont like it...dont buy it that sends a message far better than just complaining to yourself. If enough people agree with you and dont buy it will force them to change.
Where are the ads people are complaining about...I have seen some before a few of the free tv shows and such that have popped up but not on the few movies I have purchased.
So now PS3 fans think they will not only get free online forever but ad free online as well....

Its not like there is any ads on any videos you download. And so what if there is a few ads, they are usually informing people about new content or games anyway. Not random b.s like most of you idiots are making it seem.Xbox live is a service and if you don't like it DON'T PAY FOR IT!I'm sure theres a lot of fun to be had on PSN anyway:rolleyes:

lol dude dont u see tho? first fan bans, then being forced to watch ads?? next it will probably be a certain hours of xbox live a month to reduce server costs for them :/... xbox live is nice but is it really worth it? i havent bought a subscription for it in a while now since i got my ps3 :) now im 100% sure there will be no user created mods for ut3 on the 360...

p.s. this is only about the 360
i'm glad i have reflashed my dvd drive so i can skip those crappy screens at the beginning and not have to watch the warnings...

Yea hooray for the hackers and the modders, lets get behind them....not. Seriously, there is a reason why MS takes steps against any form of modding/hacking. Because the same people that are whining now, would be the same people that would whine, "everybody's using hacks on XBL".

If you did get it as i did after i got my ps3 you would turn it on and be disappointed in the build quality and most likely take it back. The only reason i got one is so i could play games the ps3 does not have like ace combat 6, halo3... If the game is multi platform i always get it for ps3

Way to pay attention, no where does the article mention the 360...DVD's have had non-skippable advertising for over a decade and people still buy them.
Could you tell me which retail DVD's contain non-skippable trailers/ads? I know of plenty rentals that do that but I've never come across such a retail (with over 1200 DVD's).
Having non-skippable copyright warnings is bad enough (which is why lots of people rip to dvd-r and use that rather than an original), but ads would be terrible.
And so what if there is a few ads, they are usually informing people about new content or games anyway.
Way to go describing what an advert is. "Informing" (trying to sell) of new content and games. What else would it be?

Thats obviously for some kind of ad-supported online rental for PC or 360, although it doesn't make much sense for PC because it will be cracked in a week.

I own at least 1 DVD like that but its very old I don't think they do it any more not even on rentals at least not in Germany.

Well. when you using hotmail. If you pay. no ad for you. But if you don't pay. You can use it for free - ad support.
That's it. ms going to make xbox live free & ad support or pay and no ad.

i highly doubt they would put this on paid content but let time take its course and we will see...as for those denying the ads on xbox live you have to be blind. once your xbox connects to live you get ads on all your tabs with the exception of the system and media tab (i think lol).I dont agree with that at all, an ad on the main marketplace page is fine as it is the market place and it is relevant but when I pay 150 points for a theme and it gets about 30% covered because of an ad thats BS...just my two cents

Ok, just so everybody knows, not everybody has ads. I have technically had a "child's account" for 3 years and never had ads. Since my account was upgraded (and allowed to use MSN services on XBL), I still don't have ads on my dashboard.
Not sure what is causing this but hey, I'm not going to complain.

I think people are taking this way out of context. Sure there are ads on XBL but most of those are ads you can live with. It's not like we have to watch a 2 minute video before switching to the Demos tab or anything. This is stating that while watching a video, you cannot skip the ads. Now if you download a video through WMP or 360's dashboard and you paid for it and it made you watch a commercial, then yeah that content should of been free since if you paid for it, it should be free of commercials and be nothing but the movie. But if it's a free movie, then you can't really complain. The level of ads on live now are nothing since they are only a banner here and there and nothing that is the equivalent of a commercial that we have seen on some videos. Like for instance, when you watch a news story, they usually have a commercial play in between one story and the next. You can't skip the commercial. This is most likely the same thing.

Everybody demonizes Sony for DRM when the co-conspirator is Microsoft.
DRM was Microsofts dream, Sony is but a piece of the DRM puzzle.

This could be another way of MS trying to get more funding as we all know the RRoD problem is way out of hand and they should have sorted some sort of extra cooling method even if that isnt the cause. (It could be one of many things.) but this way when they get large companies to post advertisements on live they know their ads will reach their demographic, meaning that they will pay more to make sure their ads are seen. And this could be another legal trap as some people who have modded their consoles, as some download the XBL movies onto their computer and put it directly onto their HDD maybe there is someway that making adverts impossible to miss, thus helping MS monitor who has a modded console. (But this is only speculation :))
