View Full Version : Microsoft allowed to ban Xbox 360 consoles which have fan modifications
According to one source, it is perfectly fine for Microsoft to ban you if you have a fan mod on your Xbox 360. A user of '360patches' was reportedly told directly from MS reps that his fan modification on the Xbox 360 is in violation of the terms of agreement so therefore MS can legally ban users from live for that very reason. His 12v fan mod wouldn't too hard to detect as voltage metering is something which should be easily detectable though bios settings.
Quote from Microsoft Xbox Live TOS "The Service may only be accessed with an original Xbox or Xbox 360 console or by logging into your account via Xbox.com.? If you are accessing the Service via an original Xbox or Xbox 360 console, you agree that? you are using authorized software and hardware, and that your software and hardware have not been modified in any unauthorized way"
You may be thinking well why is he quoting this?? Well because Microsoft have started banning xbox 360's with modded cooling. So if you've done the 12v mod your in risk of being banned for it.... How do I know this?? Because a friend of mine just had a nice chat with Microsoft About why he was banned and they explained it was because he had non-stock/modded fans.
Yes Microsoft Seem's to be going ban bad, Merry Xmas to you to Microsoft.

You won't fix your broken console, and you silence anybody who tries to fix it themselves. STOP BEING DICKS! Either stop the RROD from happening or STFU!
If I'm cheating by wanting my console not to overheat and fail terribly, then ****, call me a cheater, I'll be the one over in the corner with the only working 360!

Actually messing with power supply is a pretty good way to get rrod, if you want a fan mod so bad whats so hard to use external power for it? HD-DVD add-on for 360 has its own power supply for a reason.

I'm not entirely sure since it's been a while, but when I bought my 12 month live card last year I read all the conditions and such from the card and I don't remember reading anything about getting banned if you modified your fans. But most importantly it's a bad move from Microsoft as this will certainly cause costumers to turn on them. At least if Sony did it you wouldn't have much to complain about since we don't pay for the service to begin with. My 12 months is almost up but I honestly don't think I will pay for anymore.

And remember folks, this is the QUALITY MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE you get for $xx per year
You know, I saw a judge judy the other day where a person sold some cell phones on ebay and only sent the picture... in my books, forking out the cash to get an xbox 360, then paying for a live subscription on top of that - THEN getting banned from a paid subscription somewhat sounds like the same type of scam to me. You pay for it, you know what it's supposed to look like, but you don't have it in any way shape or form so you can actually use it.
Anyone banned ever actually get a refund for the time they can't use the service? I mean, them saying "its not you that's banned but xx hardware that is" is still no excuse to not provide a means to use the service or a refund if they deem your hardware does not comply with their ToS.

a real life or death situation were in now, the fans in the 360 suck ass so I put in a talismoon and some leds this explains why its banned, they're trying to force everyone to buy another god damn 360 or send it back to them and have to pay to get it repaired
this is still hard to beleive, but it makes things so clear
a simple fan mod gets you banned, this would mean that they are banning in many other areas too, such as led's, hdd mods, etc none of which have something to do with piracy, its basically come down to if you open your console, you are fucked.
this is all going to ****, when i heard ms would start possibly repairing banned consolesi felt great, but after this, :(:(:(

it is 12V which is set to 5V, so you should be safe
I modded mine to 12V though:( explains why i got banned:( + the leds
so if you use the connectivity kit you can kiss your arse goodbye and if you used led's you might be banned.
anyone know how many volts led's usually use because it looks like were gonna have to rig the modded internal components to use usb power now

Phone support isn't really the best place to get an authoritative answer on anything.
Im sure im going to flamed for this...but honestly how many people crack open their consoles and void their warranty just to put in some fans?? My guess is this is going to end up similar to the guy in teh forums that whines that he only "tried" modding and un-modded it and wont do it again.

in a way ms are actually helping people, people getting banned for "trying" to get around the 3 red lights will realise that its not worth it and the best way to prevent the 3 red lights is to play it in short spaces of time and keep it venterlated, and possibly live in a land of liquid nitrogen

If this is true the least Microsoft could have done was issue a public warning.
This would give their paying customers a chance to reverse the fan mod before any bans occur.
The fan volt mod is much different than the DVD bios hack.
If M$ considers it a violation that threatens the Live service or whatever I understand...

ok this morning i have cancelled my online xbox360 order with gamestation because i was certain i would get another old 203w model so i went down to one of their stores & spoke to the manager & he finally agreed to sell me a falcon 175w after i told him such & such store are selling the falcons now (i think they have instructions from microsoft to clear old stock first),so yes i have got the falcon in the end & lets hope the Fookin dvd drive is silent one as it was hyped up to be,this is the only reason why i'm getting rid of my september 2007 manufactured xbox360 because the noise is like hair dryer & i cant use it after 8pm.
btw while i was their not a single xbox360 was sold even at this low price (expect for mine) every one was buying the more expensive 40gb PS3 (all bought the bundles with games) even parents were buying their little kids PS3's.

Your obviously not old enough to understand contracts and agreements. IF you opened your console to modify the fan then you voided your warranty. If Microsoft can detect the increased voltage (which is going to put a strain on the power supply) then they have every right to ban you from using the service. If you are receiving RROD (and you want to fix it) send it fucking back for a replacement.
It's funny you tell people to stop being so pathetic. IF you had this problem you wouldn't be able to do jack **** about it... What would you do? Phone up Microsoft and tell them you voided the warranty by opening your console. Then you modified the default fan to a fan which draws more voltage and therefore is going to stress the system further. All to fix an RROD which if you hadn't voided your warranty could have been RMA'd at no cost. Way to go big man!

Opening the 360 to mod the drive or install infectus is bannable (not sure if infectus is detected like xbox 1)
Even if ms somehow could detect voltages  you just phone up and yell at them, a fan is not an illegal modification it may violate the warranty but they cannot legally ban you for it.
The same goes for led mods also don't forget the external coolers also suck voltage directly from the power supply slightly lowering the voltage the power supply receives.

Yeah, I call major BS on this post. Anything you plug in can make the systems voltage vary. This includes any external fans that are plugged in such as the Nyko that pulls right off of the power supply. As with any system the voltage always varies. You get spikes during intense gameplay. It is never consistent and cannot be monitored. If you believe this sh1t story you are 100% certified dumbass. However, if you open your case and remove the sticker you have voided your warranty and MS can ban people for any reason. It's in the terms and conditions. Again, there is no way for them to detect fans.

When you purchase the console, you can do whatever you want to it. Fans, hacked drives, jet engine, etc.
However, MS has every right to decide who to allow onto their network. They purchased and set up the infastructure, they paid for the servers, they paid for the it people to keep them running.
It's their network, not yours. When you sign up for LIVE, you are given a list of rules that you must adhere to in order to use their service. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you don't follow the rules of the service don't come bitching to the internet because you got tossed.

No, its actually very easy to detect, go into your pc's bios and look at the fan settings and you will see the rpm, voltage, etc, the 360 does the same thing
so fan = ban

But yeah, this does look like a retail selling strategy. this is ridiculas
frst M$ sell you a faulty console then you use your brain to fix it so M$ ban you.
typical M$
Maybe the voltage drop monitoring was built in to combat mod chips? It's a poor situation when you can't add a fan to stop your system from giving up the ghost. Sadly, every console that gets banned now only have had a fan added to the system, not the drive flashed. Considering the known faults of RROD maybe MS should have turned a blind eye to this mod, as people will now remove the fans, and MS should expect more faulty consoles to head their way.
Very poor PR from MS indeed, as it will surely bring the whole RROD back into the news yet again.

That has nothing to do with an add on fan. I'm aware that you can see fan RPM and all of that from the bios. However, the fan has to be plugged into a specific place. So, these add on fans actually plug onto the 360 motherboard? If so then yeah they could possibly detect it and it goes back to my last post and the fact that they can ban for any reason. Well, that kinda sucks if they are doing that.

I called them and emailed them and got almost the same thing 3 times
It is illegal to install a modification in your Xbox 360 console. If you install a mod chip or “soft-mod”, you void your warranty. Additionally, we do not allow any player who uses a console that has a modification installed to use the Xbox Live service. This includes the use of add-on fans, Led's, and the Nyko Intercooler EX. It is very easy for Microsoft to see that you had/have these console modifications, this is the reason you were banned. If you purchase another Xbox 360 in the future do not modify it in ANY way or you will be banned again.

I still don't know how they can detect the Nyko Intercooler EX but all 3 reps said that they can and that that will get you banned, but how, I have no idea, maybe they were just lying, the same goes for led's
When I get my elite back from repairs,(its on its way) i think I will sell it on ebay while its not banned.

What do you mean? If you break the seal that voids warrenty. Then MS has the right to ban you. And they would have no idea if you put a new fan in. The only way would be if the bios is checking how many amps the fan is running. Witch i know thay are not doing. This post if just one more im pissed at MS.
PS you FKOFF

Uhm I don't think you can detect the additional fans.
Here is the reason.
Such Fans may use something like 1-2W... thats really not much to have an impact on the power supply. So the voltage is NOT gonna drop. The power supply should be able to support a few more W ... those 1-2W are in the tolerance I think.
So as long you are soldering the Fans to a part which can supply enough ampere and 12V for a few W, there should be no problem.
The voltage is only dropping if you have stuff which really uses that much power that the power supply can't support any more (like having a High End SLI System with a 300W power supply ... the voltage won't be stable anymore and the computer will fail to run properly).

Im going to call bullshit on this one...first off the Nyko Intercooler EX is an external device not internal however im sure if you worded it vaguely enough for a MS phone monkey to hear the word Mod...look up mod in their handy dandy phone support notebook and read whatever it says. Why folks think that $7 an hour call center employees that arent even actual MS employees are the ultimate authority is beyond me....

Purchase your Nyko Intercooler today! Use at your own risk. You may be banned from Xbox Live when used. Stupid MS

Just use the internal USB ports for power as those cannot be monitored since USB can be daisy chained and can have a variable of voltages.. Also MS has no idea wether you have a controller connected or an ipod or any of a million diffrent USB devices.

Yeah, I call BS on this. I have an entirely modded Case and Cooling and never been banned. This "A friend of a friend" type stuff sounds like a hoax to me.

I just got off the phone with a M$ representative and they said that if you are reading this you will be band from Live.
Nah, for real i think scorpion is right...this has to be B.S. Can anyone actually confirm that they have been banned for using whisper fan or LED mod? ( no friend of a friend)
Ps- I'm going to email M$ with a youtube link dedicating them Chef's salty chocolate balls from south park ...

so if this is true.... it's prolly because of modding the power to 12v? Otherwise if you left the fans in the original state, even the talismoon fans, then you are ok....
still a ridiculous reason for a ban...
thats a lie i had the fan mod for my 2006 model and i never got banned it was like a vacuum too
