View Full Version : Not doing WiiKey updates

I've got a US NTSC Wii modded with the WiiKey, but I guess the guy didn't do that a great job installing the chip or something, cause I've tried updating to 1.9b and 1.9g previously, and I got that error during the update process, about checking the connection or something.
So right now, I'm still on 1.2 and likely unable to update this thing forever.
I haven't had a problem with it till now, cause I've been rather busy and hardly played it, and the last games I got for it months ago were RE4 and Mario Strikers.
However, I've heard stuff about how the new updates are required to play SMG and probably other new games.
Is this true only for backups/cross region compatibility? (Cause I figure no matter what, an original copy of the proper region game should play on my set right?)
Or what other games are affected by my WiiKey being stuck on ver 1.2?
Thanks very much for any help in advance. :)

I would try the other methods for getting 1.9g to work. I have never had a problem like this on the many wiis i have done.
I am not sure if there are any other protected games - i heard geometry wars might have it, but it seems a strange choice.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Actually right now I've kinda given up on updating the WiiKey, cause I've tried everything, padded/unpadded, different DVD media, etc, but everything gives me the "check your connection" error.
I searched the forums and I found a few mentions of this too, and the cause is supposedly a problem with the installation or soldering of the chip.
I've no clue how to solder or anything technical like that, so I don't dare mess around with the inside of the Wii, and the guy who modded my Wii is no longer reachable.
So I guess I've to accept that my WiiKey is stuck at 1.2. While this isn't a problem right now, I'm not sure if I'll require the benefits of the updates sometime in the future.
For example, I assume if I were to try an original NTSC SMG now, it'd work. But what if I put in a PAL version of the game? Or a backup?
Just need to confirm these things to know if I would be fine holding onto this set of mine for now, or if I would be better off getting a new modded set to play future games.
Thanks again!

I had the same problem. The solution that I found (which was online somewhere) is when it says press A button or reset to start test, you need to eject the disc.
After the test is complete, put the disc back in. When it says ready to update press A button or reset, eject the disc again, then press reset and let it do the actually update. This should work. This is actually the only way it worked for my friend and I. Hope this helps.

This method is confirmed not to work. It has the impression that it works, i.e. you hear homer and it says completed 100%. However when you actually try and run SMG it will not work.
It is not a problem with the installation of the wiikeys either. It is simply a bad wiikey. The only confirmed way around this problem is to build a port flasher and re-flash the wiikey.
