Very few people expected Rock Band to outsell Guitar Hero III this holiday season and it didn't, but it performed quite well selling 364,500 copies combined during its first few weeks on the market. However, one gaming site thinks Harmonix made a few critical mistakes which prevented Rock Band from getting anywhere close to Guitar Hero III - no individual peripherals, no PS2 SKU and no Wii SKU.
As it turned out, Rock Band performed surprisingly well in its first few weeks on the market, according to the NPD Group, selling 296,000 copies on Xbox 360 and 68,500 copies on PS3, making for 364,500 copies combined.
It's clear that Rock Band was rushed to market, making three critical errors on its way out the door: no individual peripherals, no PlayStation 2 SKU and no Wii SKU. Guitar Hero's sales plainly state the vast majority of the mainstream base is still rocking on PS2, while Wii sales doubled from October to November. Alternatively, Xbox 360's and PS3's numbers dropped. Rock Band already solved the first problem, as the PS2 SKU arrives on shelves this week, and individual peripherals are supposedly in the pipeline for early 2008. There's been no news of a Wii version, but the voice of reason is enough to make us believe it's coming early next year.
