How to easily spot a Falcon Xbox 360, just look at the UPC

A gaming site has posted up an easy method to spot an improved Falcon Xbox 360 hardware unit. All you have to do is check the UPC symbol and hope to see 175W which is the wattage for the newer power supply. Why would you want a Falcon based model? Well because they use much less power and are quieter and should reult in a lower chance of failure.

It is not news that the Xbox 360 has some serious tech issues and it breaks a lot more than it should. Fine. MS has changed the chip configuration and there are some benefits to see if the Xbox 360 you are about to buy is the right one.

Here is how:

All you need to do is look at the UPC symbol and see the 175W, which is the wattage for the newer power supply. This confirms that a Falcon chip is inside and not the Zephyr, which is an older model.

The Falcon chipped models have a much less chance of failing due to aluminum heat sinks and uses much less power so will be a lot quieter.

i've noticed that CPU's heatsink is barely warm, and i really do mean that. GPU's HS is hot, but not as hot as it used to be in my old console (first gen, no hdmi, old heatsinks etc), so that may be a good sign - time will tell.

good but i doubt 65nm cpu will fix the RROD problem,anyway to save more money on parts microsoft is releasing a 65nm gpu "jasper" in august 08 which should fix or reduce the high number of RROD.they should also look at the extremely noisy dvd drives problem,mine is the latest BENQ & its as loud as a lawnmower.:confused:

This is old as time itself :confused:. I Went to my local Circuit City and had a dumbass employee get me like 4 360's arcade and all were 203 watts (old mobo).

I think that the falcon should be easier to spot entering 2008. Im planning on having one vanilla to go online and another to mod.

from what i remember it was a halo edition 360 (which not all halo's editions have 65nm) and it was not confirmed to have a falcon mobo/cpu and new sinks. regardless, all i know is i can back up kidman64 and say that my falcon doesn't even get that warm after long sessions of h3, mass effect, orange box, cod4, etc. the extra copper tube and heat sink expanded off the gpu may help out a lot? all seems good...but i'm water cooling in january anyway, so screw it. :cool:

the article is about how to find a falcon by the label on the box at the store. if you had a zephyr (the old mobo) and think you may have gotten a falcon in a switch with m$ and want to check here is what ya do. shine a bright flashlight in the bottom vent (opposite of the hdd end) and down towards the mobo and you should see some round inductor rings standing upright that look like they have copper wrapped around them...if you see 3 you have the old zephyr. if you see only 2 and an empty spot on the board where the 3rd would be, then you have a falcon.

I ran COD4 for 4hrs today and you could hold your hand over fans and it was not even hot. The new 360 are working great here.

Back on topic, Arcade 360's with falcon are more difficult to spot. For some reason the Pro version is easier to get with a falcon.

You shouldn't have to take it apart at all. The label that says it is the barcode label from the cardboard box. Otherwise you can also look at the new power supply, it says 175w as well. The old one would read like 235w I believe. I just repalced my 360 and confirmed both of these.

I have my box i only exchanged the console box is my old one the box wasnt faulty lol...

I did the same thing. But I kept the new power supply since it runs at the lower 175w. I didn't know if you happen to keep the power supply from the new machine as opposed to your original.

Nah just swapped the main unit...like i said its got a new manufacture date so im pretty sure it will be...
