Opinion: MS should cut price of 360 in Q1 2008 to fight PS3's AAA titles

Bruce Everiss of Seeking Alpha raises the all important question of when is the major Xbox 360 price cut coming? Bruce indicates that by MS acting sooner rather than later, they can counter the PS3's upcoming AAA titles and by lowering the price of the 360 they can use this tactic which Sony just can't afford to follow. So do you agree that Q1 2008 is the perfect time for MS to further cut the price of the Xbox 360 in light of a potential onslaught from the PS3?


Currently Microsoft can easily sell every Xbox 360 they can make, fueled by the demands of the festive season. However, as we get into Q1 2008 the demand will, naturally, slacken off. This would be the absolutely perfect time for Microsoft to use the price mechanism to stimulate demand. They could put together, say, a Halo 3 package at a price where it was a “must buy” and so move a huge number of units off the shelf.

By acting sooner rather than later, they preempt Sony’s upcoming AAA titles. And by using the price mechanism they know that they are using a tactic that Sony just cannot afford to follow.

This really is a one off moment where Microsoft could put in the knock out blow against Sony and so win this generation of the console war.

They will probably be forced to do so because if PS3 manages to actually deliver their big titles and assuming that they work properly they will probably sell a lot of systems and if that happens while the 360 stands still then the 360 could be in a lot of trouble and have a hard time fight off PS3´s onslaught but if they manage to counter this effectivly then it just might be another nail in the coffin for the PS3.

Hopefully they will both find a way to come out of this as winners but there can only be one that wins and MS has to keep up with this so called onslaught if they manage to do so then both formats will survive.

I seriously doubt the Wii is going to get a price cut anytime next year and possibly the following. Why in the world would they do that when the console is selling so well? The PS3 still doesn't have anything close to Live and what they do have is flawed in every way. I was playing UT3 last night and I experienced so much lag. There is no chat and the biggest problem is that you can't access the XMB during while playing a game. There is no reason for MS to cut prices since Sony has so much catching up to do. I'd say Christmas next year will be the time depending on Sony's progress of course.

What made the orig xbox life so short? The ps2 did. The ps2 had the best game lineup, cheaper price, more exclusives, high attachment rate. Now the xbox 360 has those things vs the ps3. So the ps3 is looking more like the orig xbox did and the xbox 360 is looking more and more like the ps2 of last gen.

The sony 10 year plan is just damage control. Nobody really believes the ps3 can survive 10 years as bad as its doing (sony has lost a lot of money on the ps3 and now with ps2 finally dying off the ps3 needs to make some money and thats not likely to happen).

I don't see why a Q1 price cut would be necessary to combat PS3's AAA releases... the vast majority of those have already been announced as not being released until Fall 2008. So I wouldn't see a cut being needed for that reason.

But I wouldn't doubt Sony having another price cut before then. I'd see that as a reason for MS to cut also, not because of games.

q1 usually sux anyways for games. The best you can hope for is games that got delayed past q4 will come out finally. It should start getting good at the end of q1 when deadline have to be met. We should get some great games and some decent games that are full of bugs because they got rushed to make a deadline.

But after the kids spend their money from xmas there isnt much reason to think all 3 console sales will slow down. People are broke after x-mas and will be trying to pay off some debt for spending to much before xmas. Except for taxes, that might see a console spike in sales.

When someone calls Halo 3 Gaylo then i kind of give up trying to think it might be an intelligent person. Anyway ill try to answer your question in simplistic terms...... Im looking forward to none atm the same as i looked forward to none in 2007, i only look forward to a game once i know its release date, its price, and that the content is somewhere near close to what they say it is. So 2008 will be the same as 2007 asin ill buy games i enjoy once they are released and wont be suckered into the crap spouted by most developers (apart from COD4 that did kinda deliver on what they said it would). I have a question for you mashti PS3 fanbot.

I can stretch and say that the PS3 has features of the future like HD possobilities which the 360 also has and BD which is for the future of storing games (hddvd could also be considered a futuristic feature) as games will need more storage as they get bigger but that´s not needed yet all this has nothing to do with gaming itself untill we can´t do without the extra storage space for games.

All the above is for future gaming but for now nothing of that is something we can´t do without, the Wii has introduced us to future gaming by revolutionising the controller system but what has the PS3 introduced for us that is for future gaming that actually has something to do with gaming and affects games and how we play them?

The PS3 has so far showed us what we used to see as future in gaming with high graphics possobilities and that is the past as the Wii has changed the premises for future gaming and obviously the gamers has agreed if we go after actuall console sales. All the PS3 has done is show us what we used to consider future in the past and when it comes to future gaming for online they have nothing to show for compared to xbox 360 since their Live is showing us the future of online gaming.

To sum it up:

The 360 has shown us the gamers the future of high graphics and is the guiding light for online gaming for consoles.

The Wii has shown us the future of new controlls and interactivity through those controllers.

The PS3 has shown us the future game storage and high graphics and that´s it.

The times where it was enough with higher graphics to be considered next gen is gone and PS3 has only the future of game storage which at this point doesn´t make that big of a difference maybe in 4-5 years we can´t do with out those storage capabilities but for now it´s almost useless so where is the future in gaming when you look at the PS3?

Also the Elite being priced $50 more than the low end PS3 also makes people think before choosing, had they went with the price points above, they would have both competitors beat. I always thought Microsoft was slow on price cuts during the original xbox, and it looks like they are making the same mistakes again.

I dont think you even own ut3 on the ps3 or have a ps3 , because if you did you might have a better idea about the game. Voice chat is included , though maybe not in the best most bugless way but it is enabled.

Now factor in the huge library of games and budget titles and there wouldnt be many reason to think the ps3 could keep up. Sony would be total retarded to introduce another sku with a lower price. So the question becomes can the ps3 go lower and not kill sonys game devision. People are overlooking the main factor here I believe?

Did we not read sales figures for games etc last week where multi platform games like COD4 out-sold PS3 versions by more than 3:1 ?
With stats like that then surely devs aren't going to be getting nervous about potential 360 sales just yet. Factor into that the fact MS (or more importantly Xbox Live subs payers) foot the bill for any online activity and NOT the developers... it still makes clear sense to use the 360 as your primary focus. Unless figures come in that sugest there was a last minute landslide rush to buy PS3's I wouldn't even be remotely worried about price cuts if I were MS. The devs will continue to support the console with the higher games attach rate and MS gets a nice chunk of commission on every game sold.

All last year you got PS3 supporters saying, give it a year and watch the slew of AAA titles come in. Granted things have improved for PS3 but there is no way that Sony can lay claim to having a catalogue anywhere near as good as MS at this moment. And with only a smattering of titles on the (mostly distant) horizon that isn't going to change any time soon.

Finally, as for a 10 year plan or whatever clap-trap Sony spout, I PERSONALLY like cutting edge technology. PERSONALLY (as a gadget freak) I'd say no console deserves to go on any longer than say 5 or 6 years tops. Things start to look tired and I want shiny new toys. I've loved many consoles right from the very dawn of gaming. Unlike some I'm too long in the tooth for nostalgia. I have fond memories of Pac Man and Pong etc... But give me on-line COD4 any day of the week in the here and now.

Where are you getting this decline in Europe crap? The 360 is as strong as ever in Britain anyway.

MS dont need to cut anything, all they need to do is keep getting the games out. If Killzone 2 is a triple A title I will eat my hat. The people believing that this is triple A have NOTHING to base it on in facts. Just a bunch of photoshopped pictures and the hope that they are right for once.

Of course MGS 4 will (should) be triple A but since its a minority audience that buy it that wont matter in the grand scheme of things.

as to your reply, of course you are right $199 is the crossover point into the mainstream (or it has been) at present $249 seems to be doing just fine ;)

ms dont need to drop the price in q1, in fact if they can hang on to $249 untill they get working hardware to market then the $199 360 would kill the ps3 dead, i feeel with the 360 its the premium / pro that needs to hit the magical $199 to rocket sales and i cant see that till xmas 2009.

Again how is MS in any more of a position to lower price than Sony is... The only time they have posted profit was Halo 3 quarter from software sales. They are still losing money hand over foot just like Sony. If anything Sony will be in more of a position to lower price again in early 08. Cell is shrinking in size and Blu-ray parts get cheaper by they day.

Personally im happy if i can invite my friends into a game , i can do that so whats so special about having xmb in game ?

You can invite me .... it's the same as my 360 tag; wigsplitter069. We can get a game going. Anyways, if you used a 360 you would understand the advantages of being able to go to the dash. Messaging, friend invites, chat, etc. It has nothing to do with porn at all. It's all about a seamless experience and actually having a system that does what you want it to do. You know like streaming music from your pc or HD while you're playing a deathmatch on COD4 or Gears of War. Don't forget that invite ;)

the 360 has a lot more titles to look forward to than the ps3 ever will unless either:
1) developers pull their fingers out of their asses and make some worthwhile games
or
2) sony make the ps3 easier and cheaper to develop for while at the same time making it cheap enough not to bust your wallet.

when the ps3 has a lot of decent exclusives and a good enough price, i'd consider a ps3. otherwise, i'm sticking with my 360 for now.

In a year and a half the ps2 dropped $100 to get to $199 and so far the in two years the 360 has dropped $50, I dont see another $50 hurting it much.

Ya know..I like my PS3, my 360 and even my Wii but so far there is nothing on the PS3 that has made me go "wow! the 360 couldnt do that", yet daily there are posts about how everything else sucks and the PS3 is the future...yadda...yadda...yadda. Just because you believe a bunch of hype and hoopla about how the Cell processor craps out rainbows doesnt mean its ever going to live up to it. Developer after developer has said that there is virtually no difference performance wise between the two, yet there are still raving fanboys who insist that any crap that comes out for their console is fantastic..I swear they could have Howard Stringer **** into game boxes and at least 10 people here would talk about how great it smelled and how the firmness was just right. Before you think that this is a PS3 bash, trust me, the 360 and Wii fanboys are no better. Blind and Mindless devotion to anything is dangerous whether its religion, politics or yes game consoles.

The real question though is...why does it matter so much? Better yet is there anyone over the age of 18 that cares? If you enjoy the games you get and enjoy the consoles features who cares if its the "winner" my favorite console last generation was the biggest looser of them all yet I know I've gotten more than my moneys worth out of it. What it comes down to is a bunch of kids that worry that if their console "looses" they arent going to be part of the "cool gamer" crowd...why not enjoy what you have and not worry so much about what someone elses opinion is in your console of choice? Its a waste of time, just eggs on the people who have a differing opinon to hit back even harder next time and frankly all involved end up looking like pathetic children.

I own all 3 consoles, that makes it tough to be a fanboy, what it does do is allow me to know the weaknesses and strengths of each and post from personal experience my opinion on each. My personal opinion is the 360 is leaps ahead of the Wii and PS3, some don't agree and think the Wii is, but next to never does someone who owns all 3 put the PS3 in front because to this point all it has done is try and copy the other 2 with the exception of the Blu-Ray player, and the things it has copied, motion from the Wii and online service from the 360 and both are very sub par.

Again how is MS in any more of a position to lower price than Sony is... The only time they have posted profit was Halo 3 quarter from software sales. They are still losing money hand over foot just like Sony. If anything Sony will be in more of a position to lower price again in early 08. Cell is shrinking in size and Blu-ray parts get cheaper by they day.

Microsoft has shrunk the size of cpu and graphics chips also, that's what all they hype is over in the new falcons. The reason Microsoft can't post a profit in the games division is because they are paying for 3 years of repairs on 33% of it's console base, that's a lot of postage and manpower for sum 5 million 360s. If the falcon chipset is solid and a fix to these problems then the repair costs will fade away, until then I think you have a point.

Well said, people who have never owned a 360 will never understand the seamless integration, how awesome is it to be playing Guitar Hero 3, and your buddy sees your online and what your playing, sends you an invite to play Halo, you accept, pop in the Halo disk and it puts you right in the game with them. Or how about achievements, or the online gamercards which you have in your post sig as do millions of others around the web. Sony is so far behind and has so much work to do in catching up it's no wonder Home keeps getting delayed. I think once Home launches Sony will actually be up to speed if it's executed properly, I still have my doubts on the whole avatar and walking around to play online with friends and that is going to work, hopefully it will just be something you can choose to use or use the features through the XMB with out going in to home. Time will tell.

It's a fairly unusual name and I believe I specifically remember playing in a lounge he was in yesterday for about an hour. If it was him (and I'm pretty certain it was) he kicked the living sh!t out of me LOL. I am absolutely useless by the by, so that may be part of the problem... however he did look pretty sharp.
I'm also fairly confident I played him a fair bit last year on COD 3 as well. If a player sticks in your head for a year it's fair to say he's probably pretty nifty.

Hopefully I'll level up over christmas with a bit more time online and I'll be back a bit better (with a decent gun at least)

its true that it does make it hard to be a fanboy if you have all 3 although i've seen several posts by yourself that could be described as a little overzealous in regard to the 360 ;)

however like yourself i'd rate the ps3 bottom of the heap, i already have a pc and a media centre pc that will play any media format i can throw at it, i have an upscaling dvd/divx player and an hd-dvd player so NOTHING that isnt related to playing videogames holds any intrest to me at all when it comes to games consoles. Effectively this makes the ps3 nothing more than a lrge, nice looking fingerprint and dust magnet .

we do however differ greatly when it comes to our other choices, firstly i hate fps games, i can appreciate their good looks but i simply hate them, my 360 (a launch premium) has never had a paid for online service, not even the free month card which i gave to a friend, i make a strict policy of never buying a game that needs a patch to fix issues so that severely restricts the number of 360 games i could buy to a mere handfull (although still way more than the the ps3), the wii on the other hand does everything i want, it plays games, i can play a good single player game like zelda, metroid or smg as well as my large collection of gc games and on weekends when i have friends round its a party animal.


as to your 9 year old comment at the start, personaly i've spoken to 9 year olds with way more sense than some of the imbecilic fanboys on here (mostly they seem to be ps3 fans even when they dont own one)
