Stephen McGill of Microsoft has admitted he heard Michael Bay's comments that MS don't really care about the disc format war and are just wasting time in order to roll out digital distribution fully. McGill noted that MS are focused on HD DVD movies and are working with great patners. But they also believe in downloadable content because it's not just about one solution as one solution won't work for everybody.

There were some comments made recently by Michael Bay, who felt that Microsoft might be opting for a different strategy, bypassing the next-generation of DVDs altogether and opting for a download-only service in the long term. What would you say to that?

SM: I didn't read his comments, although I heard about them, but hey, he's allowed his personal thoughts – I think he clarified some of those thoughts about 24 hours later – but for us we're focused on HD-DVD movies working with great partners, and we wouldn't have that offer for five free movies if we didn't believe in that format.

But we also believe in downloadable content, whether it's music, or movies – it's not about one solution, because one solution isn't going to work for everybody.

I'd think MS download strategy for movies is in line with that as well...they actually stated that theirs is basically a rental service and was primarily an option of people who just want to see a film and not necessarily own it. I think there is room for both.

not if you goto those forums where bay posted that. They are almost 95% pro blu-ray and egg on to try and get him to say something against hd-dvd or microsoft or paramount. Its a total 1 sided forum and its easy to say something goofy there.
