View Full Version : FlashMe Concerns

This isn't the usual "What if Nintendo change something?!?!" concern. This has more to do with the flash protection circumvention.

Before you use FlashMe, you have to connect point SL1 on the ds in order for the flash to work. Further FlashMe upgrades don't need this, seemingly FlashMe removes the requirement to short the points for a firmware upgrade to happen. This is all well and good for convenience when upgrading. But i have a problem with it.

Imagine that some friendly chap decides to write a bit of homebrew DS software, calls it WebBrowserDS.nds and uploads it to usenet. A bunch of people download it and install it on their DS in excitement, run it, then *BAMMO* instead of a web browser you get your firmware overwritten with a bunch of nothin' and a little grinning face spinning about both screens... Some people are arse holes...

I think the protection should stay in place....

That will not happen if you wouldnt want to download everything as the first person. ;)

The Xbox has theoetically a similar problem and nothing has ever happened. Dont always expect the worst of people. ;) Someone who knows how to code for DS is mature enough to not do such crap. I guess.

Hopefully you're right and this won't happen.
I remember someone posted a cobra bios for the viper GC that broke it, ok you could fix it, but people do these things :(

They can never flash the small part protected by the SL1.. Thats the failsafe, a failsafe that do NOT exist on NDS without Flashme. so I'd say people without flashme is more in danger then those with Flashme.

So if someone make a program that reflash your firmware on your FlashME NDS, you'll be able to reflash it, the same way you usually do it. But boy. those people with NON FlashME NDS.. they have a brick I guess.
