I can't for my life get the MC exploit to work. I burn install CD's according to whatever guide I've tried, then when I run my PS1 game NOTHING happens. Oh yes, the PS1-game starts. Urgh. I've been trying to do this for 4 hours now. Can anyone help?

the way MCX works, is that you use a method of booting a burned disc, which btw must hold the correct code from your ps1 disc, then loads the correct files to you mc. then when the (i believe its called a bootstrap overload?) occurs, it loads the files from your MC. if not done correctly, you get a loaded or failed game.

ok, lokk at this wiki page. it greatly explains what goes on with MCX other than just "stick it in, do this, do that. that should work." it helps if you know the puroses of each of those this and thats.

EDIT: i can also help you with this if you still can't manage MCX successfully.

Ok. So that all seemed very logical.
All this seems to apply to what I've done.
I've mostly used this guide: http://www.mikestyle.com/tutorials/exploit.htm
With relevant changes where they were needed. All installs fine, but when I boot my original PS1 Metal Gear Solid, the game starts - no exploit execution.
I have also checked so that SLUS_005.19 (MGS) is in the titledb.
EDIT: HDLoader v0.8b runs fine if I boot from CD. I've copied 2 games to my HDD and they both work fine.

first thing to check, is the memory card you installed to plugged in? is it in slot one? did you have enough room on you MC to fully install the exploit?
second, make sure you placed all files correctly in the installation proccess so that it reads correctly from your mc.
third, did you put anything in your exploiit for your ps2 to actually load?
fourth, you can try a different game.
if you still have issues, post YOUR personal procedure and i'll see what i can do.
btw, which method did you use to load your exploit disc? (disc swap, mod chip, AR/GS2, or some other method?)

1. The memory card is the right one and it's in slot 1. The card was completely empty when I installed the exploit.
2. I placed the files exactly like in the guide I linked to. Should be right?
3. AFAIU, I included KeyLauncher, HD Advance, ExecFTPs, HDL Dumb Server
4. No difference. I also tried Castlevania SOTN.
My personal procedure was really exactly like in the guide. I only changed in KL.DAT (BADATA to BEDATA). I have a Europan machine - Could this somewhat be the problem?
My machine is modded with a Duo 3 Gold-chip, so I just run the disc and the installer starts.

ok. allow me interject something...why would you want to use an exploit when you have a modded system? you should be able to put
PS2MENU.ELF and all your loaders on a disc, then run them striaght from the disc. let me know if you want to use the exploit anyway and i will do a little research as to a europian exploit for you.

I'd like to not run of a CD, but if the MC-exploit won't work. Sure.
PS2Menu? Is that what I should use?
Could I run FTP etc from CD?
EDIT: I want to be able to via FTP transfer my games to PS2 HDD and I want to run them from there. That's really all I ask for from my machine. If I have to do it from CD. Fine. But I don't know how to do that either.

for your purposes, you can place your files on your hd from your computer. then place your hard drive in your ps2 and run HDLOADER.ELF from a cd. if your hd is not a ps2 hd then you must connect it to your computerand format it with winhip (winnhip?) or with HDLOADER.ELF on your ps2. but make sure if you format it, to do so before you load any gameson it. if you have a usb external drive, you can use usbextreme from a cd. any questions let me know.
EDIT: using the MCX is essentialy running it from a cd (sort of)

It seems like a util-CD will be the easiest way like you are saying.
So how do I do it then? How should the layout of the disc look?
EDIT: I'm going on 7 hours now, trying to make something work. It does not.
I give up. I will put an axe though my Ps2 now.

its actually quite simple. you place you ELF file on the cd and burn it. it gets a little trickier with lutiple ELF files but it is esentialy just as easily done. you place all of your files on your disc and use PS2 menu to control which one boots when it is placed in your cd drive. i will post soon on how to setup PS2 menu.

quick question...do you have a cd or a cd/dvd burner? it dosen't matter which disc you use but you must have a dvd burner.
EDIT: you cannot use a cdrw/dvdrw. you must use a cdr or dvdr

No problem. I have both a CD-RW and a DVD+-RW. I have plenty of regular DVD-Rs.
EDIT: I just want to run HDLoader, some app that lets me FTP to my PS2, and maybe a filemanager or something. I was trying to put together a disc, but it didn't work.

you should definatley consider using ps2-linux for your needs. you can do just about anything from here. since you have a mod chip, you can download the iso's, then install then to your ps2.

I'm getting PS2 Linux as we speak. I'll give it a try, even thou I don't know how linux works.
EDIT: I'm thankful for all your help mate, but I seem to have figured it out now.
I burned a CD with uLaunchELF and through that I transfered it to mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF. That let's me boot uLaunchELF without a CD. From here, I put in memory card 2 and placed HDLoader, HDL Dumb Server, ExecFTPs, etc. All works perfect.
Now I do have one question. I use the HDLoader V0.8B (without any patches) Now I found HDLoader Patch 2.53 with lots of stuff to patch. Shall I just apply the all, or are there some that are not needed?

i'm not exactly the rightperson to ask. but i would install the patches as i had issues. no sense in forming a bigger mess that may royaly screw you with un-needed files. i wish you the best of luck!:D
