View Full Version : Is there a tutorial for the memor32 and memento hack??

Just got my memor32 arrived without any manual or CD for a driver.
Formatted it on my PS2 and plugged it in.
The hardware was found and completed the wizard setup.
Problem is that i can't find it in "my computer", usually when i hook up an external HDD through usb on my PC it appears in "my computer" but this memor32 not??
I know my PC recognised it but i can't seem to find it.
That way i can't put anything on it as i don't know where i should download things on to.
Does anyone know of a tutorial or explain to me step by step what i have to do to make use of my memor32??
Also, this feature to make the memor32 into a modchip hack... do i need a driver for that to or do i just need to download the file on it??
Here's the site...
http://www.mementoteam.com/
I'm really stuck, help would be appreciated!!;)

it's normal, you will not see it like a usb pendrive or storage, you have to use the "memor32 savegame maneger" to transfer your files in and out.
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/7412/20163856vf5.jpg
download it here: http://www.memor32.com/downloads.php
make sure you have the correct drivers (download in the same page)
to make it a modchip just format memor32 with you ps2, connect it to your pc and launch the memento firmware 1.1. (remember you have to patch your .iso to make it work)

to install the hack you only have to download the file and execute the mementoFW.exe file
just make sure you have the official driver for your system installed before you do this
you can get it at the official memor32 site

1. First of all, format the memor32 memory card, by putting it in into your PS2 and starting it. Follow the instruction on the screen.
2. Download "Memor32 Savegame Manager v1.1" from
http://www.memor32.com/downloads.php
on your PC and install it.
3. connect Memor32 memory card with your PC
4. Download the memento hack: http://www.mementoteam.com/
Now I am not quite sure, if you just need to execute the memento hack files or do it over the memor32 savegame manager. But when you are as far as this, it should work out by it self.
5 Now patch the Backup, which has to be an iso with the iso patcher from memento, burn it.
After you are done, put the memor32 back into the PS2 and the patched backup into the ps2 drive, press the reset button, after this is done, wait and play.

Wrote this in another forum: ;)
The Memor32 memory card itself works fine but im having troubles with the backup playing.
About the Memor32 card:
Nice large mc. First you stick it in your ps2 and let it format like you would any new MC card. This gives you a nice large 32mbyte to play with.
Installing the Pc drives:
The mc uses some special usb drivers. Get the drivers from the "official" download page. Suggest running the CDM 2.02.04.exe, it worked for me. Better reboot you pc after.
Hooking up the MC to the Pc aint hard. You just need a normal usb cable, or so i think. The first one i tried didnt work for some reason (works nicely with the psp tho? ). But the second usb cable i tried worked.
Once you have the drivers installed and the mc hooked up .. install and run the Savegame manager. That way you can see that the mc is actually connected to you pc (mc dosnt show as a windows drive letter). And you can transfer saves and such. If you need to transfter new files/folders to the mc put them in the "savegames" folder (inside the Memor32 programs folder). That way you can see the new files in the Savegame manager (and transfer them).
The Dirty part:
The mc in itself is quite harmless and dosnt do anything more than being a nice mc. BUT with the noughty Memento firmware on it, things should be quite interesting.
Installing the firmware:
Make sure the mc is hooked up to the pc. Then run the MementoFW.exe to install it. May take up to a full minut to install, and takes a good 5mbyte space of you mc.
Patching:
Make sure to patch your backup isos with the MementoDiscPatcher.exe first. Note that the patching is nearly instant. If you forget to patch you backup you will get the usual "This disc cannot be played due to regional restrictions" or "this is not a ps2 disc" message from your ps2 (depend on version).
Playing backups:
2 worked and 6 didnt. Couldnt get anything to boot from the browser. Only got those 2 to boot after resetting after a cold boot.
Running ELF from MC:
It worked. Tried both Tocswaploader.elf. Made a "BOOT" folder with BOOT.ELF and BOOT2.ELF and used the Savegame Manager to transfer. Both booted right away with only a single key pressed during boot.
Running ELF from USB:
It worked too ! Transfered the same BOOT folder (as described above) to a official Action Replay stick and everything boots nicely during ps2 bootup (by holding down and another key).

Make sure to unzip the MementoFW.exe first (to like your Desktop).
Then doubleclick on the file to launch it. You will then open up the Memento firmware installer (black screen). Press the "Update" button to initiate the install and wait for it to end the programming (one minut or so).
Savegame Manager is only used with savegames and folders (not with firmware install).

I have now about 27MB left on my memor32 and when i plug it in my PS2 and go to memory card options i see the memento symbol, a European flag symbol and a US flag symbol, i don't see a japanese flag symbol though...
Does that mean it can't play japanese imports??
Anyways, tried a US ntsc game on my pal PS2, it was "Castlevania lament of innocence", didn't work (got a message to put in a playstation 2 disc) then a japanese game, didn't work also.
I did suppose to only download the mementoFW.exe file from the download onto my memor32 right??
Or do i need to download other things to from the download... like the iso patch??
Or am i missing an other step when i put in my memor32 into my PS2 followed by an import game??
I read something about the DEV mod in which you have to pusch the R1,R2,L1 and L2 buttons...
Might be something to do with that?

Yes, you are very close :D You need to download (or unzip) the Iso Patcher too. So, get "MementoDiscPatcher.exe" and run it to patch the backup before burning it.
(if the iso hasnt been patched the backup wont work at all).

No, you didnt miss anything. (no import game needed).

Well, thats only if you wanna run ELF files (small executable files on the ps2). Dosnt have anything to do with direct backup booting (at first glance).

I see the exact same files :) But other people has been able to boot Japanese games so why not you too?
(got a message to put in a playstation 2 disc)
Thats the error message u get if you havnt patched with MementoDiscPatcher.exe, so .. patch away buddy. ;)

I think there is a slight misunderstanding here, i don't have any back ups on my PC or onto DVD for my PS2, i just want to run ORIGINAL US/japanese ntsc import games.
I might want to run back ups one day but for now only original import games.
I have read memor32 is a good replacer for the magic swap thing, so it does run original imports right??
Or do i need to install an original PS2 import game onto my PC and patch it there??

Yes, Memor32 only runs backups right now (only games that has been patched so far). So try making a backup and remember to patch it before burning.
If you cant get that to work let me know, then we are gonna try some more advanced stuff with some ELF booting.
BUT try making a patched backup first, its way more simple.

Okay...Didn't use any kind of software for this...
Copied the files from a US ntsc disc and have put them in a folder.
Opened memento iso patch, selected the folder but i don't see anything happening.
2nd i tried double clicking on filedata.BIN but got a message "error in iso image".
Do i need to use DVD decrypter or any kind of software (not that i used that before though).
I'm very new to this but i am a fast learner when i commit to something.
Does anyone know how to use iso patcher??

you have not to "copy the files from your disk and put in a folder", you have to crate an .ISO image of your disk (use magic iso, nero or any other program that let you create iso images), then is the .ISO file what you have to select when running the patcher. After patching the image burn it and put the backup in your ps2.
You dont need to put the patcher and the .dll in the same folder of the .iso, that only was needed with the first version of the patcher (DOS version).

I used magiciso and followed this little guide...
http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-makeiso.htm
To create the image i selected the right DVD drive the PS2 game was into, then as name i typed FILEDATA.BIN, i suppose the other 2 folders and system data aren't important??
It started to create an image and when it was complete i had FILEDATA.BIN on my desktop.
So i opened memento patcher and selected it but i still got the message "error in iso image format!".
I didn't select "export boot image" though (i had to choose between 2 options), maybe i should have done that??

?? I can't understand You named your .iso filedata.bin?
You choosed the only "filedata.bin" file for your .iso?
1) an .ISO image have the extension .ISO, and any name you want, if you make an image of the game Final Fantasy it should have a name like "finalfantasy.iso" or "ff.iso" or "whathever.iso".
2) the .iso image must contain EVERY single file from your game DVD.

Go to : http://imgburn.com/ and download and install the latest version.
In imgburn :
- Select "Mode -> READ" in the menu.
- Make sure "source" is your dvd drive with the game inside.
- Click where it says destination and select a name for your iso image.
- click on the picture with the disc and the green triangle to start.
This will create the .iso image on your harddisk. Patch it with the memento patcher.
To write it back with imgburn :
- Select "Mode -> WRITE" in the menu.
- click on source and select your iso image
- put a blank dvdr in the drive
- click on the picture to start burning.
I suggest you use some good quality media and burn at 4x, but do your own tests.

Better stick to dvd-r and dvd+r, as RW media usually aint read by the ps2 laser (you can try of cause .. you can always erase the RW media again).

I just burned the memento patched "castlevania lament of innoncence" to a DVD+RW with imageburn, as i didn't have a DVD-R lying around and i have an old chunky model PS2 i was suprised that it reads it!!:)
The memor32 and memento software is great so far with this game, i don't see any hick ups in gameplay, picture or sound.
I did expect the image to be full screen as it is an NTSC game but it's not though.
A month ago i considered buying HD loader and a big HDD for my PS2 so i could swap games with my friends and burn them to the HDD.
This way i won't need a DVD-R for every single game but will it work flawlessly copying PS2 games through computer to the HDD:confused:
Will it be worth the hassle or should i rather opt for about 60-100 PS2 games stored on DVD-R's??

I have a PAL PS2 but the original game i made a back up of was NTSC.
I thought it would be fullscreen since the game is ntsc but maybe the problem is with the console??
Allthough my mate his PS2 has a modchip an he has fullscreen.

what im wondering is, is there anything i can edit to make it compatable with my ps2, or would it just be easier to wait till the new patch comes out?
the patch hints at 4-5 days but that was like 7 days ago.. so yeah lol i got my girlfriend being like 'why did u buy a 100 thing that doesnt even work?' :(
does anyone know the SPECIFIC date they're gonna realease the patch...
any info appreciated, thanks!
PS. i also know abit ab out scripting and stuff so yeah :P

From my current observation of this teams firmware releases, i don't think it will be too long a wait. Right now, i'm assuming they are trying to fix as many bugs as possible before releasing the next firmware update. Much better to release a proper update than a half baked one. I would be shocked if it isn't released before the end of next week.

I'm using the memor32 and memento hack for my back ups on an old bluky PS2 rightnow without probs.
Is it as compatible with a slimline PS2 or are there issues?
Reason i'm asking is that a new laser for my old PS2 may not be worthwhile the money if it should fail.
Instead i could buy a slimline PS2 2nd hand for that money, and the lasers on that are cheaper to.

Seems like there are "issues" with the v7900X range using v1.2e firmware (so people use v1.1 instead as that one works).
On the other hand, firmware v1.1 has "issues" if used on some old bulky ps2s .. but has now been fixed in v1.2e.
So, overall memento works on all ps2 if you use the right firmware. Also theres has been like 3 version firmwares released in like 3 weeks .. who knows what next week will bring .. some hdd booting thing .. or not?
Bulky vs slim: Hard too choose, really. The slim is way more quiet and then there is the size thing. Only real difference on the bulky is the internal hdd support, but will you ever need that? I have a hdd and i still barely use it. Next ps2 i get myslef will probably be a slimline .. but its way to early to tell.

Buying a 2nd playstation 2 (slimline or bulky) to use might be worth in the long haul for people like me that wants to hold on to their old games in the future.
I was considering the thought of having a HDD for PS2 for storing my games.
But if back ups are properly burned at 4x speed on good quality DVD's like Taiyo Yuden and good taken care of, they should last for many many years.
The only thing i can think of having a HDD is that it's a cool thing to have but transfering games from the computer to HDD seems to be more complicated and a hassle.

Depending on the game, there might be incompatibilities, some are reported to be working and some don't at this moment. You see, memento is still in development so there's good hope that all the problem you might experience now will be fixed in a near future :)
Report the games you find who aren't compatible with your memor32/memento in this thread (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=89458), same goes for the ones that work and you can browse it to find games that others report to be working.

I have bought the memor32 for my nephew for Christmas and will be helping him back up his games etc..
Questions.(sorry if they seem basic but I need to get my head around this)
Does the iso patcher only work on games that have been back up via your DVD drive. Will it work on games that are down loaded?
Do you have to have the MC connected when you do the patch?
Other than the Firmware, driver and patcher is thier any other software that I need to download?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The patcher works on downloaded games.
You don't need to connect the MC when patching your games.
No, you just need that! (Of course you'll need dvd-burning & backup software too)

well maybe you're trying to patch a CD image and not a DVD, or your iso isn't an iso but another type of dvd backup

I am making a legit back-up of Prince of Persia The Two Thrones (have it sitting right in front of me) its pal, used DVD decrypter to get an iso, patched the iso, put the v1.2e on my memor32 programming complete, put the memor in the ps2, put the game in, and i get the memento splash screen, then that dissappears and it the screen blinks and then nothing :S

Left it for about 10 mins and nothing happens, hope there is enough info, ive done quite a bit of reading and have heard of this problem, but not in this much detail, and i think that was when they were trying to use ntsc games in a pal system (btw i have a pal system).
Thanks,
Max
Also on the side, no updates from memento since beginning of december, when they updated the site every few days, anyone know whats happened to them???

About your game not playing, this is probably a compatibility issue and will be solved in future firmwares. Have you checked the compatibility thread to see other test results with the same game?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7JXVJlvrcrE that is the latest sign of life from the memento-team... It's one week old though, I guess they're very busy with the firmware and new website that they are launching... I guess we can't really demand anything, but I'm so eager to see the new features, I have mementoteam.com set as my start page and I'm equally annoyed every time I see that there hasn't been any update :p

okay i just tried final fantasy XII, this time version 1.2e gets stuck on the memento splash screen, and again just a blank black screen on version 1.1
Do you think there is any point trying one of the betas.
I have a v5/6 ps2.
Any help/comments much appreciated,
Max

I strongely advise to follow up the mini tutorial in post 16 in this topic if it hasn't been done yet.
It worked great for me for either memento 1.1 or 1.2 on my bulky PS2.

Did you try a reset on your PS2 if it didn't load the first time?
I usualy have to reset the console (do not push reset to long or your console will switch off that way).
If it still doesn't work the only thing i can think of is that the memento software may not work properly becausse of the type of console you have, not sure though.

Yeh i tried a reset, the only other thing i can think of is my media, the only thing i have right now is 2nd class media. (ive checked that massive media thread for noobs) but its all have. The only funny thing is that its 8x media, and i have a good sony writer, but imgburn seems to think i can only burn at 2x :S ant figure this out, im sure its screwing up my disks, burnt 3 last night, all failed to verify within the first 30%, and verify speed is at about 0.3%, something funny is going on :S

could be your writer, i use a pioneer DVD RW DVR-108.
It came as standard with my medion PC.
First time i tried to burn i used a DVD+RW so i wouldn't waste DVD's.
DVD+RW's work with my PS2 but doesn't work with all PS2's it seems.
But a DVD+RW wears out the laserlens quicker of the PS2 so it's not recommended as your defenitive format.
So far i used sony DVD-R's, they work well but i just ordered a bulk of 100 DVD+R's from Taiyo Yuden which is of a very good quality.
But i guess the type of DVD doesn't solve your problem.

Yeh i nearly ordered 100 for £30 the other day, but i think ill order just 5 or 10 and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for the reply, i dont supose you also know why the forum posts are back-to-front ie: the last post is on page 1 :S

I'm defeniltly a step closer.:)
NTCS games won't play in your PAL console. So you will need to convert you iso files wich is in NTSC to PAL (I use Util.PS2.ntsc2pal.Converters.-.5.3.03)

yeh ive heard quite a few ppl saying patching the games doesnt work due to screen alignment, but ive had patched games working on my pal tv/ps2.
I have been using "ps2 ntsc2pal with yfix" found it on a torrent, works a treat!

Making a backup of an original ntsc game with imgburn and use it with the memor32/memento did work on my pal console eventually, without converting anything.
I just didn't quit understand how to use memento at that time.
Not sure torrents need converting though.

Not sure i understand you completely but you have to open the savegame manager as i had trouble to finding the memor32 on my computer.
Read the first page on this forum, i think that might help.
If not... try http://www.memor32.com/
Or the forum...

This is a good place to learn more.

I looked at the link you gave me and NO, you can't play original imports straight away.
As with any game you still have to make a patched backup from the original game, import or not.
I can play Japan and US import backups on my pal ps2 with the memor32.
So, yes, it's better using the memor32 to play imports if you don't want to spend money on a Japan ps2 console.
Read carefully post 4-16 in this topic, maybe you did forget something.
After some trial and error i finaly understood how it works and it's very easy once your used to the process.
Try it, and if you still have problems just ask or explain what you did step by step.
Don't know much about vista though.

Ah!!! this way the memor32 can only serve you as a savemanager and a big memory card.
I f you can burn it is awesome for backups though, like a portable modchip.
