View Full Version : Video: Plug 'n Play Memor 32 playing backups on PS2 with Memento
We have been informed of a user-created video that shows the newly released Memor 32 memory card for use on PS2/PSTwo, booting backup games thanks to the hacked firmware flash from Memento. In the video you will clearly see the backups working as a result of inserting the Memor 32 memory card. The card is available to buy from <A href="http://www.divineo.de/php/affstart.php?affcode=66623&prod=ps2-m32" target="_blank">Divineo.de</a> / <A href="http://www.divineo.fr/php/affstart.php?affcode=66623&prod=ps2-m32" target="_blank">Divineo.fr</a> / <A href="http://www.divineo.es/php/affstart.php?affcode=66623&prod=ps2-memor32" target="_blank">Divineo.es</a> and <A href="http://www.divineo.it/php/affstart.php?affcode=66623&prod=ps2-memor32" target="_blank">Divineo.it</a>.

But you have to patch the games right?

yes you have to patch the games first before they will work.

Does it really take ~30 seconds to boot? Don't get me wrong, it's a great thing. But waitin' that long everytime I want to play a game.../o\

It's either that or don't bother playing backups (my method has next to no loading times ;))

or a chip, or the independence exploit, or swapmagic.

Make it work for the PS3... Then we'll think about it... (HDD loading is a must!)
Just wait and someone will probably find a way to do the same thing with an official PS2 memory card similar to the independence exploit.

i donīt doubt that it works..... but itīs interesting to see "The game can not be played due to region lock" message when he removes the memor32 from the ps2.. normally the red screen of death should appear as heīs using a backup and not a original one.
the second thing that is interesting is too see how thereīs a hack software for a memorycard tool that isnīt even released that long... i think the hack is older than the availability of memor32..
in conclution i think the same team is behind everything... another strategy to boost sales???
i mean the idea is great but they should clear things and not use people hopes to earn money like that(my opinion)

For the slim version that is.. or maybe with hopes it will work on PS3.
Owners of "fat" PS2 already have the much better way of HDAdvance/HDLoader.. Loading times are cut to the bare minimum plus it's free. No modding whatsoever involved, just an exploited memorycard with independance + HDAdvance/HDLoader ELF, an harddrive and network adapter. You can back it up straight from the original or dump the iso to the harddrive from the PC ala XBOX way.. It does require some work to be able to FTP a dump to the harddrive though. That's why most opt to cogswap the backup in.. or have a no-solder like me that ejects the tray without telling the console (V4 Gap PS2). Beware for broken fuses with those no-solder in anything other than V4!

From what I have seen, they patch the backup to appear to be a DVD movie disc. The PS2 will play DVD movies on DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs, etc. So when the Memor32 isn't in the PS2, it just thinks it's a DVD movie it can't play because the region of the disc doesn't match the region of the PS2. I.E. a US PS2 can't play European DVD movies normally.
When the memor32 is plugged in some sort of exploit perhaps similar to the PS2 regular memory card exploit is triggered which runs some sort of loader that most likely takes advantage of the ability of the system to read a DVD movie that is on a DVD-R/DVD+R so you can play the game.
When you put in a real PS game, it reads the disc and OKs it as being a PS2 CD or PS2 DVD or PS1 CD. This then enables the system to read data from the disc. If you have a copied PS game, it denys the system the ability to read data from the disc. But you also have the DVD movie type of disc. Since there's no reason it can't be on a DVD-R or DVD+R it just reads and figures its a DVD movie so it's allowed to read data. So then all you need is a program to get the disc's program loaded. Though you may need to patch the program like HDLoader does on the fly.
So hopefully someone will reverse engineer what they did or hack it so you could load it onto a regular memory card. Especially since I've yet to see a North American retailer with this thing, plus I doubt any special hardware is in the card itself.

Let's make some things more clear:
First of all, I saw it referred to as "hacked firmware flash". Well, it is not a firmware and is not a flash; but it is a hack, though :)
It is rather an exploit, like the independence one, but this one attacks MagicGate protection. So you can call it: "MagicGate exploit" ;)
The method involves an encrypted executable run from memory card.
Q: why it takes so long to boot?
A: because they (memento guys) used a large executable and the memory card is slow (not just memor32, any PS2 memory card). Remember how slow is to save from a game with a large gamesave (>1MB).
[scph30003/30004, v3 :D quite old I may add]
Q: why/when will be the trick available on official memory cards?
A1: a regular memory card is unique from MagicGate point of view. That means that any executable would need to be installed to a particular memory card. That is a problem for distributing. I don't know how memor32 cards are made but it looks like that from MG point of view, they are the same (they all use same cryptography keys).
A2: it might be already available if you know where to look.
Even if they are available, they cost too much for what it is.Reminds me of the ViperGC bullshit. Suddenly dropped in price when some competition came around.

It does require some work to be able to FTP a dump to the harddrive though.
Or just stick the hd in your pc (even in an external usb caddy) and use winhiip to install the iso's. takes less than 2mins to install a full 4gb game that way.

MagicGate was broken quite a while ago.. Nowadays virtually any Chinese memory manufacturer can make a MemoryStick Pro counterfeit in any flavor and yet pass with flying colors in all Sony's software checks to detect such cards.
The times where cards shared the same key are long gone..

I'm to lazy to bother removing the hd to later mount it on a usb case so that a few minutes after I can unmount it and put it back inside the PS2. Though thumbs up for reminding us! ;)

lol it would be pretty cool if this memory card also work for the ps3 to load ps2 games, becouse in fact it uses the same platform but just emulated. I guess if you buy a ps3/ps2 memorycard cable, you would be able to use this on ps3.
couse the slidecard trick also worked for a procent. am i right?

It sucks that you have to patch games for them to work.
When will there be a version available witch doesnt need patching?
Maybe this will happen in a later version of the memento software?
If so, then it will be interesting, cause it wouldnt make sense for ppl with alot of ps2 games already backed up. Id rather pay the same price for a professional modchip install then. But if this patch thing is ever fixed, i will reccomend this memento card for everyone :)

Without a hardware part you cannot get past PS2 disc authentication. That's why the only two ways to read data from custom made discs is to use CD-Audio or DVD-Video discs.

You can get past disk authentication in both all versions of PS2 and PS3 by swapping the disk with Swap Magic and tricking the drive sensors into thinking the Swap Magic disk never left the reader. Google is your friend.

You just confirmed that without a hardware trick you cannot get past PS2 auth :p Swap Magic is based on tricking the hardware.
The idea was to have software only solution.

Well I got one. I tried the exploit on my US PS2 and get a weird error
"Play halted due to Malfunction" cant wait till they get the NTSC version up.
The software seemed to work fine on Vista
