View Full Version : The mighty Mass Effect is just 6.74GB in size, plenty of room to spare
It has been revealed that the huge Mass Effect is just 6.74GB in size which of course is well within the upper capacity specification limits of a dual layer DVD-9. So hopefully this will fill Xbox 360 owners with a bit of confidence in light of various news which suggest that the medium used by the Xbox 360 is too small for future blockbusters.
We did get a sneak peek or the main screen on the dev kit and the size of the game is 6.74 GB – well within the contstraints of a dual layer DVD-9. When you see how huge this game is, you’ll see that even future iterations like Mass Effect 2 and 3 with their upgrades will not have a problem with disc space.

They forgot to mention that the leftover space is used by MS, check out ALL other dual-layer DVD games for Xbox360.

as long as the remaining space is not going to be filled with content we can unlock by paying later i'm happy, sometimes free space can be an issue.

Where did you get that from? Every game uses (a little bit over) 7gb. They can be bigger but it runs smoother with more space on the disc. Bioware also said Mass Effect had far more gb for even 2 DVD9s (there was a thread at their forums) but they have a few smart people to fit it on one DVD (I think the compression made the biggest part).
I'm not scared about the game size. There will be games with 2 or 3 DVDs in the future, but who cares?

nobody should care, its been in the gaming genre for god knows how long. having to swap discs is hardly an inconvenience especially after so many hours of play, many of gamers would take days to even get to that point. Everybody who is so on the bluray bandwagon wants to use every excuse they can to justify the media but in reality more space doesnt mean better games

Man i thought this fool was banned, nevermind will just add him to the ignore list.
On another note, the mod's really need to clean these forums up of the twisted fanboy's.
I used to love reading these forums but i hardly bother anymore as the fanboys run wild and ruin any decent debate.

Cant quite see the point of this article. So the games small enough to fit on a dvd9? Big deal.
May not need any more space, not like its a 40 gig game shoe horned into dvd or a 1gb game loaded with extras.
A games as big as it is? If its developed for the PC and 360 what size do you expect?
Last time I checked no games were released on the pc on Blu Ray and few games for the PC ever come on multiple dvd9.
So some games are bigger than others.

Less than what? Last time I checked XBox 360 was the only version of the game so there isn't really anything to compare it to.
Also if they can have some space left I guess they were able to fit in everything they wanted as oposed to the disc being full and having to cut corners to make it fit.

there was the gamecube with their 1.X GB discs but that did hurt them as developers would run out of space at times and then we had 2 discs games like resident evil 4(wasn't resident evil 1 2 discs as well?). wii discs are only single layered as well and its a supposal next gen system. but mini games dont take up much space and companies would rather sell us 5 different titles of mini games than simply putting them on one disc.

wow. so why didn't they use it up. put better music (uncompressed audio is so nice) and stuff like that. maybe make the graphics 1080P. if there is so much room, then why does lost odessey take so much room. maybe they should get bioware guys to re-do that game so it too can fit on one disc.
put more polygons on the characters.

Anyone who knows anything about the 360 disk structure knows that 6.74GB is pretty much maxed out. Theres DMA on each layer that takes almost 1.2GB of space. So what room to spare?

so do we really need a 100 billion terabytes to make games still? UH NO, we never did.

Doesn't surprise me, better coding, efficient compression and the use of in game cinematics (as opposed of fmv's) means we don't need a blu-ray disc for 60+ hours of gameplay :D.

Mistwalker soen't care about compression, thats why the game will take 4 DVD9s

duh.... and all ps3 games over 9gb are uncompressed. What's you point, the fact is that a huge game like ME fits on the single DVD 9.

HAHA HAHA AH ELELELEOO Next gen is where you turn on your system and it displays these 3 red lights and wont work, then wait for 2 weeks for M$ to send you a replacement, then you ***** on the forums for 2 weeks and try to diss the ps3, then you finnally get your repaired box back only to have it Red ring again a week later.
Truely next gen. 360 fanboys please STFU.

ya. so you don't think enough ps3 fanboys bring up the RROD argument? i'd have the ps3 if it had any games worth playing, but it doesn't. so essentially that ps3 you may have in your posession is a brick. absolutely useless for the purpose it was built for: GAMES. that's until MGS4 but even then, i'll play it on my friend's ps3 since that'll be the only game of note.
