View Full Version : Wii Maintenance Mode
Hi, I'm a newbie here, so please ignore any unwitting transgression of rules, written or unwritten.
Thought I'd found something that only I didn't know about but a brief search later I'm none the wiser.
Sooo... at the risk of ridicule, infamy and flames...
Power on your wii and at the initial health warning message hold down both the + and - buttons then press A.
Message: System is in Maintenance Mode Message board unavailable.
I haven't explored much yet except that some of the menu functions are unavailable.
Also, if you start the shop channel, a port scan would suggest that the wii is running an ftp server.
I am unable to get a login prompt as the server is reset as soon as addressed.
That's all Folks!
Explore at your peril.

This sounds very promising. Have you tried any of you original games you have backed up in this mode? The reason i say is that as far as im aware Nintendo didnt issue software Devs with special Wii's and prehaps this is how they ran their games when they were in development

some buttons in Wii System Settings won't work,
such as "Wii Connect 24", "Country", "Internet / Agreement & Contract".
i guess this mode is for reseting the wii to its original state from first day! :D

that would be great for those who have an half bricked wii ;)

My gut feeling is that this is the first stage of several actions that have to be performed. Quite frankly I'm staggered that nobody appears to have found it before me!
I think that 9 10 doh would not make it easy.
My money is on a sequence of bizarre clicks in different places or a certain password that will need to be entered possibly as the console name or pin.
It just seems a little too good to be true that they brazenly announce that you have found maintenance mode.
It is also possible that they have extra bluetooth codes from a "service" wiimote. I'll have a trawl as somebody must have mapped the button codes.
Happy hunting!

Great Find FiJ.
Hopefully this is the gateway to finding something really interesting.
Start mashing those buttons people!
EDIT: someone over at gbatemp posted this somehow fixed his half bricked wii.

Well this is odd. It deleted my recorded time for Battalion Wars 2. I was just playing, I quit the game, there was an hour and 30 minutes logged. I did this neatness, went into the News channel, it booted me out and then the record of me playing BWii was deleted from the message board.

Not sure if this would bee any different, but... has anyone tried copying any of the VC titles while in maintenance mode and compared them to those that aren't? Prolly moot but never hurts to try I guess.... :D
Also, as for the clicking in specific locations, that'd be somewhat ridiculous. More possible that there is a place that will take specific button presses or, as stated above, somewhere to type something in.

hmmm, cool, perhaps they can be copied with NONE console id from an outdated wii (which suffers from bad laser or other problem) to a new one.
did you try to find the string of your console id in your vc games in this maintenance mode? I'll later give it a try!

in fact if you press and hold + and - and then press any other button, you get the "maintenance mode"
EDIT you just have to press and hold + and -

Tried it on my PAL system and I get this when I click on Forecast and News channels:
http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/3586/maintenancebx1.th.jpg (http://img48.imageshack.us/my.php?image=maintenancebx1.jpg)
Weird, huh? I guess it's normal for the system to not use WiiConnect 24 in this mode, but I was expecting something along the lines of "Connect to the Internet first".
News Channel wouldn't fetch news for me either. When I exited, everything was up to date on the Wii Menu, so once I tried Forecast Channel all the info was there.
Hum...

Perhaps it disables the network connection?
Has anyone tried playing a game on Nintendo wi-fi?

Sounds interesting that this is causing such a wide variety of symptoms.
Here's to hoping it leads to something larger.

Hey guys, this is my first post, and I just wanted to let you know that the supposed FTP server does not respond.
I ran a port scan on ports 0-65535, and the only open port was 21, which does suggest an FTP server.
But...although I'm able to open a socket and connect to my Wii on port 21, the server does not respond. Disappointing news, yes.
By the way, I needed to open up the Wii Shop Channel to get the Wii to connect to my wireless network.
FTP data:
State:> Creating control socket...
State:> Connecting to 192.168.0.3 ...
State:> Socket connected, waiting for welcome message...
Error:> Control connection was aborted due to Timeout or other failure.
Error:> Control connection closed by server.
Sorry to bring the disappointing news...
EDIT: Woops, guess i read the first post too fast :p You already new this...whatever. I'll keep experimenting and let you guys know if I figure anything out though

I doubt that this means much, since it's a failure rather than a success, but I asked a friend (LoZKing) to try this on his Wii and try to boot the GameCube Action Replay. As when not in maintenance mode, the Wii refused to boot the game. I was really hoping something interesting would happen, but I guess Nintendo wasn't stupid enough to allow an easily accessible maintenance mode to disable game blacklisting. I don't think anyone else has suggested this; I'm surprised no one has. Oh well, maybe someone will find an exploit....
EDIT: Just had an idea! Has anyone tried MAC spoofing to try to see if the Wii FTP server will only respond to certain MAC addresses? I don't know if it's worth the trouble, but maybe someone could rig a raw socket connection to bruteforce the MAC addresses to see if anything happens?

it kind of sounds like a special mode used to test the system without leaving a trail. not much else.

What happened? What exactly did you do? What exactly happened? Any screens? More info please! :D
Thanks for the laughs at wiibrew. I did this using an Apple keyboard. Guess what? Huge shock coming for everyone here (wait for it...) yep, nothing happens whatsoever. Nothing. Please feel free to mock him now.

btw no one on #wiidev can confirm this works. tried and tested and doesn't apparently do anything.
so if it really did happen swear on a bible that it did. if it didnt, don't be destructive to the wii scene!

Actually my friend you arent the first. About five months ago there was a video posted with this info on the net. You can google for it. Sorry to steal your thunder mate. However I do encourage you to find out if there is any thing we can get out of this mode. Cheers, and god luck.

Also, confirmed fake.

What is fake? The Maintenance Mode? That does work. I can confirm it.
Are you saying the format Wii screen? Who cares?
So far nothing is good in the maintance mode. Someone will find out something good and till then "keep trying"

i went into maintenance mode and all it did was disable some stuff and i had trouble starting up games. i heard somewhere that supposedly maintenance mode shuts down some security, possibly allowing dvd-r without modchip but i was to lazy to try it.
