A lot of us have been getting that error when trying to flash our Wii with 1.9g for Mario Galaxy. :(

And yes, we've tried it with 1.9b and we still get the same error.

I ran the 1.3 disc and attempted to turn "Region Override" to "ON", but it goes back to "Off" everytime.

I've tried just about everything except opening my Wii, which I don't want to do because I KNOW it's an original WiiKey in there.

Everytime you put the config disc in it will always display the default settings not the settings that you have on your chip. (it reads from the disc not the chip)

To get it working insert the disc wait until it says disc stopping press A or reset to start then eject the disc before you press reset or A. It will then count up to 100% then put the disc back in it will tell you the same again and eject before pressing reset or A.

This should get you over that problem.

Mickey690, did you try this?

I did this, ejecting the DVD, the update seems to be completed, no error messages... but IT DOESN'T UPDATE ANYTHING. So, I am looking for an answer for this problem too.

Did you go through the process twice. The first time it just checks it can do it. The writing goes red (i think i cant remeber) when it is actually updating.

And yes I have done this method on 2 wii's and didnt have to do it on 1 so far.

I just tried that method.

It didn't work! Mario Galaxy still gives the unauthorized device error, which means I didn't get upgraded to 1.9g... :(

Yes, I did it in the two steps. I eject the DVD on both proccess ( Test and UPDATE ),cause I got the error in them.

So, If you got your wii updated using the "eject trick", this is a good news to me. Did you try SMG after this?

Mickey690
11-02-2007, 06:33 AM
Yeah all worked fine. On another forum I frequent ther are loads of people using this method with success.

Try burning the update disc again on a lower speed maybe? not too sure.

Does it give you the confirmation that it upgraded succesfully? ie do you hear Homer?

Yes I heard the Homer voice at the end, But SMG didn't work after the SMG wii firmware update.

So, you did this updating two times to get you wiikey updated?

No i meant the test and the upgrade. I upgraded 3 wiikeys i've fitted into friends wii's last night (fiited a few months ago just upgraded last night)

I just retry the whole process, ejecting the DVD before TEST and before UPDATE. got the message update complete, reboot galaxy.

You did this in two wii with success, this sound good to me:).

I will try to burn at a lower speed ( I burned at 8X all my backups games works fine at 8X, Verbatim media ).

I have All day to try, cause it is holliday where I live.

I'll post if I have any ( good or bad ) news.

Thank you so much.

It's not going to work.

I did exactly what he said (ejected DVD before TEST and before UPDATE) and Galaxy still didnt work.

And it's not a problem with the disc because my friend used the same Wiikey 1.9g disc (he burned it for me) and it worked with him.

Wonder if one of you that's having this problem have checked to make sure you have continuity from the Wiikey pads to the ic legs on the drive chip. I think it might be good because you are getting the "Update Complete" message. Just a thought.

Yes for my Wii, I didn't have to eject the dvd until the end, but It did do 2 pass throughs one was a check and the last one was the flashing/updating. Also when I put SMG In It did a system update and worked fine. Also are you guys sure you got the right smg release there were a lot of fakes going around.

well, like everyone else, i'm having the exact same problem....
i was told my wiikey IS NOT a clone....but...i'm having second thoughts...

gonna try to get a wiinja deluxe...it seems to be doing better than wiikey...

I got a Pal Wii with a Wiikey, burned the PAL update dvd and it passed the test and the update.
But only to play SMG, i had to turn my wii language to english.
You might even try to put your wii settings for the tv on 50hz or 60hz.

I have also tried the "eject the disc while testing and updating" method, and it doesn't work for me either. It says it's updating and everything but it's really not doing anything.

ok, as u ppl seem to be trying loads of stuff that i wasted my time on already yesterday here are a few facts about this problem:

* this eject trick does NOT work, it says test ok and update ok but really doesn't update anything, I tried that a couple of times.

* there is most probably NO problem with the connections. I resoldered mine 2 times and i'm 1000% sure the connections are right. especialy if connection 3 (that is mentioned somewhere for the update) is not connected u cannot boot any backups (eg I tried Metroid Prime 3).

* this is 99,99999999% NOT a "clone chip" issue. first of all there appear to be people with clnes that were able to successfully update. second of all my chip looks 100% exactly like pictured on wiikey.cn, every little detail of the pcb layout matches the one in the pic 100%.
of course if you have " clone" that doesn't even use the same hardware, which some seem to have, then this would be an explanation.
but for most of us here this is certainly not the case.

* I also tried 1.9b update before, i tried burning at 1x, 4x with padding or without, it's all pointless....

so the question is where is the problem coming from?
what do we have in common?

I have a PAL Wii which is at 3.1E FW now and I have a D2B chip and my Wiikey was from the first batch (no hologram). However a friend of mine has his chip from the same source and got it even a few days before me and for him the update worked.

Maybe the update won't work with D2B chips? Or D2B chips and early batches of Wiikey are the problem (some D2B update function missing...)?

I was getting "test failed: connections problem" message.. i tried this trick.. it worked to pass by the test, the update started ok.. but i didn't get update complete.. i got "error updating, see readme to use recovery modes".. i tryied to play a game (zelda) and it worked well... so, what I did wrong?
Before start testing I eject and put the DVD.. when I got test 100% I eject it again before the message "test failed: connection problem" and put it again.. then the I had to press reset to start the update.. before it I eject and put the dvd in the tray again.. updating.. then I got 100% and I didn't eject the DVD.. I wait a little then I got that message "error updating..".. i have to eject the dvd before this message? When I got 100%?

I'm in EXACTLY the same situation as you P1nky, except that my Wii is NTSC and at 3.1U.

And I have no idea what's a D2B chip. I only recently got my Wii chipped with a Wiikey, so I dont think it's an old batch.

I am not an expert in gaming mod chip but this sounds a little bit weird:

"While all tests have proven positive, the challenge now is to create a delivery system to allow existing Wiikeys to be updated."

As everybody knows, this statement came from wiikey.cn news page, telling us the update is almost ready to go.

Allow existing wiikeys to be updated!!! this sounds they have problem to update their chips. It looks like diferent hardware version, maybe something to make hard to copy or use their firmware, and this was a shot in their foot ( and in our aswell ).

Anyway, since I have this problem with 1.9c, this "Allow existing wiikeys to be updated", sounds very weird.

I also have no idea what a D2B is. I have a US NTSC Wii with 3.00U firmware, can't update to either 1.9b or 1.9g.
EDIT: also whys is that when I remove the disc while it's testing/updating, it says it works and it's all fine and dandy, even if it's not? :/

I got mine working!!! I was using the iso image that had both the 1.3 config and 1.9g. When running with that disc I got the error during test. Tried the eject disc during test and update. Said it updated fine. Popped in galaxy and got the 001 error unauthorized blah blah crap. That crappy update disc didn't work. I downloaded the one from wiikey web site ran it and now galaxy works.. =)

Hi,

Did you check if you flash te key correct, first time is testing, after the test, the flashing will start.
Here it worked like a charm, firt updated to 1.9b,then 1.9g
No problems here.
I read in many forums now,and people having troubles with it.
Maybe they where thinking the test is actualy the flashing.

i had the same problem, posted on the other thread though

day 1 wii, early wiikey chip (deff pre hologram)
wii updated fully
wiikey never updated before

i d/l the combo disc provided in the other thread, us version since my wii is an ntsc us

inserted the disc ran the test got 100% then fail

grabbed the one off wiikeys site(was somewhat down when i was looking before)

burned with imageburn

stuck it in and it worked

so if your having problems just burn the wiikey official one off their site if you havent tried that already, seems to work for a few people

I probally must do that "hex" config disc trick afterwards but will se, I update you on the process.

Edit: All worked smooth, brand new Verbatium DVD+RW, Firmware 1.9g PAL update, first checked so it "tested", then press reset button, then it say "Ready to update", press reset. It updates, then it ask you to reboot your wii and you will hear Homer Simpson say "You are all nuts!"
Edit2: Used IMGBurn on Auto settings and my PC did actually manage to open the DVD on my PC so hmm werid but hey it worked for me, I hope the rest of you guys get it working!

This is weird and im wondering if its a D2B with cut legs problem. I updated my wii (D2B no legs cut) no probs at all. Then with the same disk i tried to update my mates wii (D2B legs cut) and it came up with the connection error.

Its definetely not the install of the wiikey as the backups still play fine. I think it is either:

1. The wiikey is actually a fake even though i have the hologram
2. The update doesnt work on D2B with the legs cut.

I cant see it being point 2 as i think more people would be on this post!!!!
I dont know what to think anymore.

I think im going to try and run the recovery disk and then the 1.9g upgrade. If i get it going i will post back.

If people are getting this error and they then get it to work please post back!!!!

OK thinking about it a bit more im starting to wonder if you cant do this update if you have upgraded to 3.1.
My wii was 3.0 and worked fine. My mates was 3.1.

I was at 3.00U and updated wiikey clone without problems. I've seen people stating on 3.1U and still able to update the chip. OK, I went through about 10 discs trying to get it to work. What did eventually work was when i used fixsize with the exact GC iso size, and burnt using imgburn - although I had used this program on previous burns and I used the same types of media throughout. I did, however, fully erase my dvd-rw before the attempt that worked.

I'd been using GCOS throughout, since I was finding that burning the update any other way wasn't working - so I'd suggest anyone using GCOS to try using fixsize and burning that iso instead. I don't know why the update is so sensitive to the way it was burnt... Just to note, i have an NTSC with the latest firmware, original Wiikey, D2A.

did you have the check your connections error or did the disc not boot at all?

I had the same issue with my US wii. Was initially trying with a GCOS image and that gave the connection errors unless I ejected the disc during the flash process but then the flash didn't actally write anything to the chip.

Downloaded the update directly from the wiikey website and burnt it at 4x speed on a verbatim DVD-R with Nero6 (using the recorder/burn image option) without resizing or padding it. This then worked 1st go without any errors with the disc left in the drive for the complete process.

@breeza: are you upgrading to 1.9b or already in 1.9b to 1.9g??

My problem on this thread (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?p=749370) is how make a disc without DRE for upgrading to 1.9b in 3.0U.

Then I tried 1.9g downloaded from wiikey website, run fixsize on it, put the disc it, then I got: "An error has occurred. Press the Eject button and remove the disc, then turn the Wii Console off and refer to the manual ... "
Tried it more than 5 times... same message.

ok heres my experience. I burned the 1.9g update onto tdk dvd-r with imgburn. No padding or anything. I put it into my wii and then when it said stopping drive I removed disc and then hit reset to update. Then it said sucess and then I put disc back in. It updated fine and then I had to use GCOS to boot into 1.3 config disc and set the region to the right settings.

Ps. My wii had the test failed error before i did this.

is SMG working?

Let me just say that I've verified that it's THE CHIP that is the problem. I'm going to try to explain everything I've found as slowly and as detailed as possible.

I had a wiikey that I got pre-installed. Now when I tried to run any update I would get the test failed check your connections message. I had burned the disk with Alcohol 120% with no padding or anything onto a DVD-R. The eject disk method did let the update run, however it would appear that there was no change and no update being done on the chip as I was still getting errors running SMG.

After all this I happened to have another Wiikey from a botched install that I figured hey, why the hell not try this. After opening my Wii and inspecting the chip I could not effectivly conclude if the first one was legit or not but it didn't matter. I then switched out this first chip that would not update for this second chip. I then tried several backup games to make sure it still worked. Then I ran the update disk and sure enough it worked. I then ran SMG and it worked as well.

Conclusion: Again I couldn't tell if my first chip was legit or not but it seemes there is a bad batch of chips out there that won't update. I don't know if there is a software solution out there or what but the only thing I could get to work for me was just getting a new chip.

Good luck to all of you.

Ok, I lost time and some DVDs, trying to get my wiikey update to play SMG.

Tomorrow I will ask to the guy who modded my wii to replace the chip. The question is : Should I get another working wiikey ? Or a cyclowiz?

Cyclowiz teams released a faster update to the SMG and I didn't see anyone complaing about the chip doesn't upgrade or anything like that.

In the other hand, wiikey owners are having a lot of problems to do an upgrade.

I also heard that 1.9g update ( that never worked to me, as the 1.9b ), has a BUG regarding the DVD speed. this could be our problem, even people who does the update seems to have more noise during the DVD spinning.

I sent two emails about this problem to the wiikey suport, that they never replyed, And I never heard the wiikey team talking about OUR UPDATE PROBLEM, and I am sure they know what's is happening and they should at least give us an idea. maybe a wiikey recall

So, wiikey or not wiikey ? this is the question.

The Wiikey was already updated to 1.9b before I updated to 1.9g.

Thank you for your confirmation man.

Guess I'm going to trash my Wiikey chip and get a Cyclowiz now.

I *COULD* get another Wiikey chip which works, but I'm not going to bother.

ok ppl, i got mine working too, but don't ask how...

i used the parallel port flashing method and flashed the 1.9g directly onto the atmel chip. it boots galaxy now and get this: i can NOW also flash the fqn chip via the update dvd without any ejecting and/or errors!

if you want more info, you can find it here:

in GERMAN language!

big thanks again to arakon for his help! :)

in the end you just need two 1k ohm resistors, a 5v power source, a couple of hours time and good nerves :D

you can use the autoflasher with the 1.9g fw for the wiikey that was posted in this forum, you just need to replace the "sp12" with "pony-stk200" in the program.bat file so that it flashes using the cheap ass programmer :D

I posted this before allthat needs to be done is download it from the wiikey site and use filechop on it then burn it at 4x to verbatim dics. That all I needed to do to get past this error. I also originally did the disc remove method and realized it must have not been updating. I don't know is this is effected by clone chips or not.

Thank you so much for this post. I was doing the same exact thing... using GCOS. Error after error for me to that point. I downloaded the update directly from Wiikey website, burnt it with Nero, ran it and everything worked perfectly. I am now playing SMG! I had downloaded the update and burnt it once before and it didn't work. Worked perfectly this time. Before this I was convinced that I had a clone and that I was going to have to get another chip. Don't give up folks. Thanks again.

I get the error with every wiikey update and wiikey system disc.
The only one I haven't tried is gcos- 1.3 because I have no gc controller. I had 3.1E on my console.

Friend of me had a semi-bricked wii, caused by metroid prime ntsc on a pal console. His console was stuck on 3.0 wii- update. With the mario galaxy update his wii is not bricked anymore. But with 3.1e installed he now also cannot use any of the update and system discs from wiikey. Before the 3.1e update he could.

ps: I have used a system disc in the early wiikey days

I'd say its a faulty Wiikey/Clone that will need a fresh reflash of the Wii Hex, like p1nky has done.

All we need is for p1nky to be kind enough to list the parts used + a picture.

11-17-2007, 08:48 AM
My setup:

PAL Wii with 2.2E firmware
WiiKey default firmware (never been updated)

Here is what I did:

Downloaded the combined update iso from these forums found at: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showpost.php?p=746698&postcount=95

Although the instructions to make the ISO were in french (I think!), I nevertheless made it to the gaudy (and somewhat pervy) looking update screen. Wary of my little sister walking in, I hurriedly pressed the A button using a spare GameCube controller. After watching the progress bar go al lthe way up to 100%, I received the error message: "Upgrade Error: Test Failed Check Connections Try Again" in red.

I decided that someone had messed with the update - only an idiot would put that kind of background on(!).

So I decided to download from the official WiiKey site. After erasing the DVD+RW and burning it on, I got to the same screen. I decided that the WiiKey team are a bunch of sex starved perverts. However, I proceeded to press the A button on the GameCube controller and this time it got to 100%, it said it was successful and so I went ahead with the proper flashing. At the end though, I didn't hear any Homer Simpson voice until I pressed the A button and the console rebooted itself.

I then got the Config Disc v1.3 and configured the WiiKey to Region Override to on. (That was the only thing that was off).

Even though I got Mario Galaxy PAL, I decided not to chance anything and went to update my Wii firmware from 2.2E to the latest using online update. Once that was done, I put in Mario Galaxy and it took a while to recognise the game and just before that it said that it was initiating an update and I confirmed and let it proceed. After that it recognised the game fine and Super Mario Galaxy loaded up fine. I havne't played it very much yet though.

The moral of the story is - make sure you download the firmware from the official WiiKey site at: http://www.wiikey.cn/

I think my WiiKey might be a clone - it was suspiciously cheap when I got it last year and there was no hologram.

I think I've the worst problem. Below were the steps I've taken which cost me several dvds.

(a) 1.9g (failed to flash)
(b) 1.9b (failed to flash)
© Update 1.3 (Failed)
(d) Update 1.2 (Failed)
(e) Update 1.1 (Failed)
(f) Try using GCOS 1.3 (able to load the menu but no gamecube controller)
(g) Try looking for gamecube controller (Not sold in my area)
(h) Use the HEX technique (http://psx-scene.com/forums/wiikey/58444-wiikey-clone-install-after-3-0-firmware-how-fix.html) FAILED
(i) Try using kkwarez 1.2 setup (need a gamecube controller)

I've burnt every dvd using verbatim dvd-r. Some using filechop. Some no need. I've the original wiikey ntsc-j fw3.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My latest progress were :
(a) Downloaded 1.2b. Found to be working. Caused me to have ecstasy. No need game cube controller. Turn the region on.
(b) Tried 1.3 disc. Failed. For the benefit of the doubt, I redownloaded 1.3 from the wiikey website. Burnt it again. Tried and still failed to load.
(c) Tempted to use my remaining 4 dvds to burn again 1.9b (although I've done it twice). But later gave up.

I just got my pre-modded Wii a on Friday, and spent the entire weekend trying to tackle this 1.9g upgrade mess. I've tried every variation I have found. The only thing that loads is that padded GCOS; the 1.3 set up off the official site gives me an error. I did the region override, I even reset it to defaults -- no go. Both 1.9b and 1.9g simply give back the error connection problem. I burned both padded and non padded versions, used 2 different types of speeds (16 x then down to 2x), and 2 different types of media: Same crap.

The guy who I bought the system from said "send it back and I'll see what's up". I don't know whether to send it back or wait for a possible solution. I mean, it's not defective, and I went through hell to finally get a pre-modded unit, and I was happy to see that EVERYTHING that I threw at it worked. I don't mind waiting for some sort of fix rather then sending my system back, but I'm just worried that all of us who are having similar problems may not ever see a way around this? What happens in the future when other games need firmware upgrades..... we'll surely be screwed.

Many people with Genuine Wiikeys are having this problem.

Hey Red, I am thinking of ordering a genuine Wiikey as I'll have to open my Wii anyways and take off the clone chip and flash it by the way you recommended, so I thought it would be better get the genuine one and get it installed in ONE GO, aka open the console, throw the junk off, install the genuine one, and don't ever get to open the console again.

Now, since you said many people with even Genuine Wiikeys are having this error, you think the genuine one that I'll get (thinking of getting it from modchipcentral) will have that same error again ? I'll be devastated if it doesn't update :(

Do you think I should get a completely different brand ? like may be a Wiinja Deluxe or Cyclowiz ? I presume the solder connections of the clone and the genuine Wiikey ones will be the same and thats the only reason am ordering a Wiikey in the first place.

Thanx a lot in advance for the help. Am so confused :(

Hi mate,

It would be impossible for me to say in regard to getting a full working genuine or not. It’s a gamble either way, you may be alright then again you may not I am afraid.

Maybe email the company to make sure the modchips work with SMG?

Best thing I can suggest is getting that kit I pm'ed you about. That way you can always update the chip if need be.

Other then that trying to get a clone/genuine from someone that can deffo confirm that it upgrades.

I would've certainly given it a try mate but all of that is so confusing :( and I don't know anyone who would help me out if something goes wrong.

Also, the wiikey that I am thinking of ordering will be installed by a professional modder who installs PS2 chips but has ZERO knowledge about Wii modchips. I'll have to explain him everything with diagrams, pictures, and may be videos how to open the Wii and install the chip.

Now, its quite difficult for me to understand the programmer in the first place, let alone explaining him what to do.

I have noticed that my backups sometimes wont read properly when i insert them in the wii while it's off, or boot up the wii with the backup inside.(Get the ? unable to read disc error) When I boot it up with no disc inside I never get this problem. So my question is:

Do any of the ppl still unable to update they're genuine wiikey have this problem too?

What about ppl who have succesfully upgraded? It's probably unrelated but maybe there's a link?

i have a genuine wiikey and so far all methods to update have been in vain, i'm using Sony Dvd-r's and a Sony Gw drive burning anywhere from 6-2x and it's not working, my wiikey reads and i've taken a mulitimeter to check connections and it all works and what not just refuses to update and flash

tried padding the image or switching to a different brand? like tdk or verbatim?

I have tried TDK, and verbatim isn't sold at walmart and i'm over my budget for Online spending this month ;-;. I've tried padding the iso, did so with file chop and nothing came of it. i padded it to the size of a GC Disc. is there anything else i should be doing?

My wiikey is now 1.9g! Currently playing SMG at 59 stars.

Initial setup:
- US Wii
- 3.1U FW (through net)
- I inserted SMG disk and auto update itself. reset wii.
- inserted 1.9g disk and got the CONNECTION ERROR
- burned at least 15 VERBATIM DVD-R. no success.
- almost giving up hope.

- remove wiikey and installed it to my friend's new wii. (US 2.0U FW)
- run 1.9g update. ALAS!
- SUCCESS updating wiikey. (without eject trick).
- reinstalled wiikey to my unit.
- run smg. SUCCESS!

Woah...man.. why didn't I think of that?

Sounds like this may be the breakthrough solution I've been waiting for.

Now I just need to learn how to uninstall and reinstall Wiikey..heh (my friend has 1.9g working and on his Wii, so I can use his!)

Thanks :D

Nice work!! Still it's a bit of a mission.
So it looks like its the initial firmware thats the problem then. If you are on 3.1 then it can be flakey.

hi guys,

i got the same problem cause i used an old dvd-burner. connection error blablabla

then i tried to burn the update disc on a friends computer, quite new one and tadaaaa, the update worked.

i think, its quite useless to burn a big amount of dvd's with a different speed with the same burner, just change the burner or use the comp of ur sister or dad or whatever. maybe it works, worked for me, it worth a try!

Greetz

(Used Verbatim DVD-R, 4x Speed, LiteON burner, all games and wiikey stuff works fine)

I'm disgusted that wiikey is not coming out with some explanation to the original wiikey's owner. At least they should have acknowledged the problem. Huh

:D Burn 1.9g pal update using Nero 6 on Verbatin DVD-R @ 4x

1. Boot Wii with GC controller connected and insert wiikey update 1.9b then run update remember first load bar is just a test, when 100% press reset for real! update to take place (RED LETTERS) to 100% till "insert coin" turn off Wii.

2. Boot Wii with GC controller connected and insert Wiikey update 1.9SMG hotfix update then run update remember first load bar is just a test. when 100% press reset for real! update to take place again (RED LETTERS) to 100%till no-change in screen then disconnect GC controller and you will hear Homer "you are all nut's" then turn off console to red led. and pull out power cord from console.

3. contect power and reboot to dash insert SMG BU and SMG PLAYS FINE!!!

This is with a Wiikit clone.

My second Wii with Cyclowiz was sooooo much easier to re-program this hot fix but then The Wiikit was £6.00 and the Cyclowiz was £26.00.

Well every thing is Just fine here with two kids playing SMG.......

I've been thinking why is the wii drive unable to detect copy games. Is it because of the quality of the burn or the quality of the dvd? If it's because of the dvd quality, is it possible for us to buy the type of dvd needed so that the wii drive can detect the dvd and play it like an original one? If that's possible, then we don't need to use a mod chip to play a same region game. Hmm

Original disks are pressed and not burned. You probably can create your own disks that would be read but you would need the DVD pressing machine!!

search on what the latest mario-related modchip patches did, and how the wii started to detect dvd recordable discs and you will know their latest trick of detecting em! ;)

Basically this is what I have concluded.

If you get the error check connections try again you most likely have a divineo clone. Burning it with filechop padding, regular, diff media and diff speeds dont work (unless the first disc was burnt wrong then try a couple more times). Wiikey.cn will not release an update to help a minority because the majority is happy. I have wasted exactly 14 discs. Tried recovery cd's, tried boot disc, tried eject method, tried different media types, tried everything.

why would they release a patch to fix things for people who bought a chip that was basically stolen from their design :P

@manias
because some people with "originals" have problems. I have a clone. Thats right I admit it. For $7 it was well worth the run it had. It still works just not every game and im still happy just wanted to clear up others misconceptions. Most people here got it installed or premodded which seems to be the problem because they were told its real when its fake.

Yeah it's really annoying people are getting ripped off that way. But generally people with proper originals don't have these problems. So they won't "fix" anything :/

Ok, So i called the guy who installed my WiiKey thru OzModchips. I was having the same problem as everyone else. Could not update my chip as it said "check your connections etc.." and kept getting errors about "Error 001: unauth'd device detected" and so forth.

So anyway, called the guy, and he said that he had that problem a bunch lately. So he did some research for me, and found out that chips with an SS scrawled in pen on the back were locked from any writing to the chip. So no updates were possible, he has no idea why they did this, but he changed the chip for a new batch, and it updated fine and i can play all games now with no worries. So basically it is just a bunch of WiiKeys that were sold with a lockout on them that blocks updates.

So basically, take it back to whoever sold you the chip, and ask them to switch it for a new one.

Hope this helps anyone else out who is having the problem, i was getting so frustrated and went through sooo many blank cd's. Thank god its all fixed now.

Good luck to you all.

This is my first post here...sorry to dig up an old thread!

I have a US-NTSC Wii from launch, and in August of 2007 I got a Wiikey installed in Seoul, Korea. I was told it was the real thing. Never a problem with it.

I never updated it all this time, but this week, I finally got around to trying the 1.9s US update. I downloaded the update from the official site, and burned it using Active@ ISO Burner 2.0, ImgBurn, and Nero 6...used five DVD-Rs so far, and every single one has turned up the same problem everyone posted in this thread, which I've now read in its entirety: 'Error: Test Failed Check Connections Try Again'. I used both padded and non-padded versions. Oh, and truthfully, my DVD-Rs are a pretty cheap generic variety.

I'm new to this, so please forgive the ignorance, but here's my question: Has a real solution (other than installing another modchip) ever been found or released? Could it be my DVD-Rs? If so, which brand would be my best bet?

Thanks in advance, and sorry again for digging up the past!
