According to reports from India's news media Mexico's Carlos Slim and Microsoft's Bill Gates have been overtaken to the prestigious honour of being the world's richest man by the chairman and largest shareholder of Indian's Reliance Industries. The report puts Ambani at nearly $1 billion richer than Gates.

Mexico's Carlos Slim and Microsoft's Bill Gates have been overtaken in the race to be the "World's Richest Person," at least for today, according to reports from India's news media.

The Economic Times and the Press Trust of India reported Monday that Mukesh Ambani, the chairman and largest shareholder of India's Reliance Industries, surpassed Slim, Gates and the well-known investor Warren Buffett, due to a strong rally in Reliance shares. Ambani owns almost half of Reliance's outstanding stock.

Here's how the Indian reports rank the top five as of today:

Mukesh Ambani - $63.2 billion
Carlos Slim Helu - $62.2993 billion
William (Bill) Gates - $62.29 billion
Warren Buffett - $55.9 billion
Lakshmi Mittal - $50.9 billion

when he dies only 10 million of that for each kid and an undisclosed sum for the wife and the rest goes to charity... what a waste.

His computer RROD'd so he can't transfer any funds , sorry.

Unlikely, since this guy's stocks will probably drop him out of the number 1 spot as quickly as they put him there. He sounds like a "all eggs in one basket" kinda guy.

Giving it to you would be a waste.

Funny fact.

If the inventor of the safety matchstick (G. E. Pasch) hadn't committed suicide. His kids would have been the richest people in the world. The guy had a total world-wide monopoly on matchsticks. His monopoly fell when he committed suicide.

And does anyone really care? That is the question.

Agreed. Strangely, I don't think this is news I wanted to see. On a side note, there are the Paris Hilton's of the world who live extravagantly on the riches amassed by their smarter, harder-working ancestors. And there are those who simply luck into wealth or collect it through nefarious means. But, generally, the reason the guy in the "rich" part of town has a newer car than you do or a bigger house isn't because there's some cabal of greedy, oppressive troglodytes working to keep your wages down but rather because that guy is probably smarter than you. Works harder than you. And, perhaps most importantly, made better decisions in his life than you did.

To put it bluntly, for every Paris Hilton in the world there is a Bill Gates and a Steve Jobs who rose to the top because of their brains, hard work and ability to innovate.

This will anger a lot of the class warfare people who are likely union supporters and subscribe to John Edwards' "two Americas" theory, but those people are mostly angry because nobody wants to believe that their lack of fulfillment with their lives is their own fault. It's always easier to blame some invisible, anonymous conspiracy.

A lot of people don't get that joke, but that doesn't make the point here any less true. If you're not as successful as you'd like to be in life it's probably because you're not that smart, or you're not making good choices in your life. Maybe you spend too much money downloading music off the internet or eat out at restaurants too often. Maybe you've been passed over for promotion because you've never opted to stay late at work and help out.

When I hear a tale of woe about some poor person on television or read about it in the newspaper I can almost always point to a reason why that person is poor, and it's usually their own fault. Like an article about a woman who can't earn enough working two jobs to support five kids? Why did she choose to have five kids in the first place? And why didn't it work with her husband? Or maybe an article about a man who says that he can no longer afford his health insurance even as he poses for news pictures in front of a entertainment system complete with surround sound, flat-screen television and a satellite box? With a fancy new cell phone on his belt to boot?

Life is all about the choices we make, and when you make poor ones it's your own fault not mine. Your inability to be successful is no mortgage upon the success I've managed to wrest from the world for myself and my family.

I hope everyone understands that, because I don't. Its amazing what a cut and paste can do to a pointless topic.

great. now india can boast 1 richest man. a few hundred thousand rich people. some middle class. and about a BILLION people living below the poverty line.

but dont let that keep you from the veneer of bollywood and the "evolution" of india, theyd have you believe.

not many know the true face of india. its al balle balle, no mention of people who eat rats and live under inhuman conditions.

Indians dont eat rats, thats the chinese people. I think people do realise that there is a lot of poverty in India :/

You'll find that people in 3rd world country will resort to eating any type of edible meat , not just china.

In regards to some of the posts , If your poor don't cry about get , get smarter , work harder , get richer otherwise stfu.

Doesn't stop Microsoft from doing a good job in that matter does it?

Despite MS's huge market share I think they are facing more competition than ever before , their OS has competition ( Apple ) , their office package has competition ( Sun Star to name one) , their console has competition (Nintnedo , Sony) , there is no market that I know of where MS have a 100% market share.

That is all great for the people who actually have a choice and can do something about themselves. I mean yeah brains and decisions are important but good ol' fashioned LUCK is needed too.

Luck like bein born in a country where you can actually do something about your situation because if you are born in easter Africa or many parts of central and south america, even a big part of asia, dude, you are $hit out of luck. Whole communities that before they are even born they are guaranteed to have a life of misery, hunger and disease and will probably not live to be 20, 15 years old? For every 1 person that make it and get to be rich or even millionare, there are hundreds or thousands of people that will most likely will have a life of misery.

----

But anyways the problem is mainly on what people focus on. Americans are paranoid/crazy for money. All they give a damn about is money and having more of it. Even an old dude who cant get an erection anymore will end his days getting more fortune and for what?

I really dont give a $hit about money. I already make the necessary money to pay and buy all that I NEED. Conformist? Well peolpe that happen to be happy with what they have are called that. But I prefer to enjoy what I have and the time I have free to enjoy MANY other things. Women, booze, games, traveling... I bet many rich people would trade all they have to have a life like I have.

Like brothas say: Mo' money, mo' problems

The difference is that Bill Gates made his fortune with business star while Slim made it by stealing and taking over telephony companies in a hostile manner.

Do you really think Bill Gates is still worrying about the richest man title? He's not and this is probably why---First off he's not even Ceo of Microsoft anymore he's like chief software engineer. Secondly, he gives a lot of his wealth to different charities. Thirdly, didn't the government split his company in half because they feared he would monopolize in a capitalist country. If it had not been for the split how much would he be really worth? Lastly, Warren Buffet is leaving his money to Bill Gates when he dies. These guys from India and Mexico what have they done for the under privileged people in their countries. Nothing that I've heard of. I guess they keep it all for themselves. So really think about it--who is the richest man?
