View Full Version : Bill Gates breaks his promise, no IPTV this year?
MS has issued a statement that the fall 360 firmware upgrade will not include IPTV functionality. At the CES show earlier this year, Bill Gates promised the service would be launched this year, however it now looks doubtful. By the end of 2007 partner companies will be offering IPTV services to Xbox 360 owners, he said. Many reports at the time suggested MS would have problems with such a service witch DRM being a major issue for IPTV operators and content owners.

Who cares about IPTV I want the XVID support. Actually this firmware is kind of a let down anyway. I would like to see is more codecs, ms/kb support for 360 games, and better BC. If it cost x amount of points that's fine.

That will explain it a hell of a lot better than Zeus.
It is scheduled to be released by the end of the year to service providers.
It's up to the service providers when the service will be deployed.

The software is useless to 95+% of people. The only way its useful is if you get IPTV from your ISP and they use Microsoft TV at the backend. In the US this is Verizon FIOS. Not sure if anyone else in the US uses it. I know there is a service in the UK as well and I do believe there is a company in Japan as well.
Overall though this has no effect on most xbox 360 owners. When the price of the system comes down in 2 or 3 years it might become a standard set top box for some of these services.
Microsoft first demoed this over a year ago so I am not sure why its taking so long to send the install disks out.

Not trying to insult you or anything man, but...read pezjono's post lol.
As for the IPTV, I have a pretty darn good cable company, so I'm sure they would agree to it, and if the feature is released, woot more power to me. If not oh well it's no big deal, but I'm glad they are considering such a feature.

Feel free to insult me. But try to find something that actually contradicts what I saying if you are going to do so.
Pezjono links to the Joystiq article which says is that Microsoft Media Room will be provided to service providers by the end of the year and it is up to them to provide it to customers. Which is fine except what it fails to point out is that it is only being provided to companies who are already providing IPTV using a Microsoft solution.
If you check the Microsoft Media Room website it lists the companies who are going to be using the software. Only company in the US is AT&T U-verse service. In the UK its BT, France Club Internet, and so on. Total there are 11 who are already running the software needed on the backend and 7 who are listed as using a trial version.
The one I listed earlier Verizon's FIOS does use MicrosoftTV on the backend last time I heard but its not listed as using media room. So I suspect it might not be compatible with the 360.
I doubt your cable provider has enough bandwidth to support IPTV without major infrastructure changes. I have read some articles about cable companies looking into it but they are talking about a total change from the current setup to an IP based setup. If you check the list of providers on Microsoft's site you will notice they all appear to be telephone companies.
