Ben Heck has revealed his latest crazy piece of modding innovation - a new one handed Xbox 360 controller known as the 'Access Controller' which he notes took him almost as much time to complete as the Elite based laptop mod (so a long time). The idea of this soon to be manufactured controller is that you lay it on your leg, table or any surface and get to gaming with one hand, moreover the five sections are removable so you can chop and change them as you wish which makes the controller suitable for both left and right handed gamers.

Anyway, today I’m going to show you all the prototype for the new single handed controller I have designed and built, which I’ve been calling the “Access Controller”. This is actually the second prototype, a more refined version of the first. Alongside the new Elite-based Xbox 360 laptop (yes, it is coming) this has consumed most of time in recent months, hopefully explaining the drought of new projects.

Here’s the basic principle: You lay this controller on your leg, table or arm of a chair and all the buttons are available on the top surface. The gag is that each of the five sections is removable and you can plug them anywhere you want. This not only makes the controller work for both left and right handed use (simply mirror the layout) but it also allows the user to optimize the button placement on a game-by-game basis. Even if the user has partial use of both hands it should still be easier to work with than a standard controller.

Erm..
it was designed with one armed people in mind (after a gamer who lost an arm in Iraq contacted him(?)).
So not a waste of time.. a nice thing to do for people who couldn't enjoy something as easily as you.

I especially like the interchangeable parts. I think he said all of the different bits sent every possible signal enabling them to be changed.
Very good idea, means people can have it how they like.
Must have taken a long long time.

Hopefully none of us will ever need this, but its a great thing for those who aren't able to play regularly.

Gee I expect if you had only one arm any controller made for people with two arms would be a waste too huh?

It's not only made for one armed people, but also people with deformed hands.

Totally agree! Microsoft should pay for this design and manufacture it.

Um... I know this is clearly geared towards one handed players... but its not entirely new....

The swappable module thingy was done back in 2005 by Gamester when they made the PS2 Radica Phoenix Revolution Customizable Gamepad.

Check it out:

This is the controller. You can see the "swapping" already done. This is just one of the possibilities. Hmmm... playing PS2/3 in XBOX/360 style...

Here's the second one... the module thingies removed... switch and swap!!!

Sorry for the unwanted advertising of that place, they were the 1st pictures I could find when I remembered this... :(

Wonder if it works on PS3... darn... no home button

Not only made for one-armed and deformed hand people... but for people who want to fap to Master Chief.
