I can't answer a lot of your questions but I thought I'd say a few things.

I just installed a duo3 chip into my version 7 (large) PS2. The installation was tedious but not overall that bad. Probably 3-4 hours total start to finish and it worked out great. Every backup I've burnt (all games that I own!) has been successful using Fujitsu DVD-R 8x discs.

However, I really want to do the harddrive method because I'm worried my laser will wear out or my dvd drive will fail. I want this thing to last 10 or 15 years. If/when a harddrive fails it can be easily replaced, assuming IDE drives are still around.

I believe for the slim you need a USB hard drive.

1) I think you can still play online, especially if you have the original disc (and you should...) as any decent modchip will have a bypass to disable it.

2) I really didn't want to have to swap, so I'd say yes it is better than the swap method. However, I did my own installation so my total cost I think was $27.77 for the chip including shipping.

3) Installation is a pain (or costs money).

Pete

if you have a modchip installed in the ps2 when you online it can be detected as a cheating device and you would get banned from online games

personaly if i didnt have a modchip already i would use swap magic, or just wait for what its being made for the memor32
