Hello,
I just bought a new PS2 Slim (silver) 79001 model. I want to start playing burnt games, although I read a lot about mod chips and swap magic. I am still not to sure what the best choices are.
I am hoping I can stick a USB HD in it then run games off there but I ain't much info from the forums. Therefore I am hoping for some expert advice from some of you regarding this. Also I was wondering if there was any way to protect the laser from being used too much.
Thanks for any help that is provided.

In order of preference (and compatibilty)
1) Mod chip
2) Swap Magic
3) USBeXtreme
I wouldn't recommend a USB HDD, they are slow and have lower compatiblity than their internal counterpart.
I have a swap magic, no problems here, cept I can't boot DL backups.
A modchip would be the best option, if it wasn't a 21 wire installation.

The swap magic seems like a good tool for not breaking the warranty. I know the mod chip has better compatibility but I read around on some forums saying my model (SCPH-79001) is too new.
If possible I would like to know more about problems with Swap Magic. What are the difference between DL backups and backups we create? Does that mean I cannot play DL'd japanese backups as well?
Also I noticed I need a special flip cover? Is that really required? because the warranty is right at the square leg of the system. If a replacement cover was needed then the warranty would be broken...

I don't know what **** you have been reading but I have seen modchip installation diagrams for 7900x model PStwo's.
The swap magic doesn't have perfect compatibility, I have one game that doesn't work directly but I have a way around it with uLaunchELF 4.12 on my USB memory stick. DL backups means Dual Layer aka DVD-9, ie those that are over the 4.37GB limit of DVD-5.
Special flip top?!?!, it has a flip top already, you just need the tools to stop the TOC from refreshing when you close the lid. Most retailers selling the Swap Magic with them, but its not hard to make your own. But if you made your own you would need to open the console to install them and the warrenty would be invalidated, but if you were considering a modchip this wouldn't be an issue.
I have seen those flip top lids and IMO they aren't worth it, its no more effort installing the swap tools.

I'm actually in the same boat you are. Currently, I ordered a Crystal Chip 2.0 Pro SLE for my new PStwo, and am waiting for it. From looking around and what other people have told me, the Crystal Chip will work on the 7900 PStwos and the installation should be very similar to it's previous ones, but i'm still trying to find an installation diagram for it, though that search seems to be rather fruitless..

Ummm I thought DL meant Download'd games lol. Anyway I found this guy to mod my PS2 (model 79001) he says he is going to use the Matrix Infinity. Since I know nothing about mod chips and what types are good... I was wondering if anyone know if this is the best one for this new model?
Thanks for the help! :)

you can do what i use, IS EXTREMELY EASY
what you need?
ar max with media player
what you do?
1. block the sensors
2. put cdloader.elf on a pendrive
3. boot it on media player of armax
now you are on cdloader,
4.put a high toc game, swap for backup
play

I did the whole USB HDD and it sucks first you have to format it properly then transfer the games through a program that formats them properly. All that is find but the problem comes when you have to play the games, even if they do work their laggy for the most part and movie sequences in between studder and skip. Games just were not meant to stream through the 1.1 USB port on the ps2. I did hear of a HDD extender for the slim which would work like the HDD for the older PS2's.

I do have a slim ps2 but i dont know what model, but the procces really easy,
to sumarize it, you just boot the mediaplayer from action replay, let it scan the usb drive for the cdloader, once it starts cdloader you make the swaps, and you are done :D
i guess its just a matter if your console will read action replay, and i cnt think of a reason why it wont wonrk,
so all you need is to buy original action replay that haves media player.
oh and own the biggest in size ps2 game you can find, because when you do the swap lets say with a 2gb game, your copy cant be bigger than 2gb, thats why you need a big original.
i cant find the guide i used or anyother that explains it the way that guide did for me, so if you get the ar max i can explain it better than i have on these posts :D

Thanks for the reply... The only thing that I'm wondering about is the action replay version I need. I went to eb games site and saw one that says AR Max evo for the ps2 however I think there was an older version of it that they don't sell. I see in the Max Evo specs it says it has a media player feature. Is this the one that you were referring to (looks like it has a USB flash drive with it)?
Just for clarity, I have the silver slim PStwo...

if it haves the media player, it can boot cdloader so its supposed to work.
but read on the action replay box, it should say what versions are supported
