Masses of gamers have confirmed on the Xbox and Bungie forums that their copies of Halo 3 are experiencing disc read errors (over 100 posts at the current time of writing. However, but that is not all, beyond the disc error reports, there have been lockups and even the dreaded RRoD reported belived to be as a result of Halo 3. At the current time, most reports seem to be from the standard edition not the LE version with some speculating the discs contain corrupt data which damages the hard drive. The problems seem to happen randomly with some able to play the game fine for a few short hour(s) before problems begin while others are saying the problems are limited to just a few selective game modes.

If your disc doesn't work, clean it, repair it, or stop using hacked firmware.
If you don't want to get RROD then don't put your console on the carpet (which is probably the biggest cause), and don't stack stuff on top of the console (game cases, etc.). If you play for extensive amounts of time, consider investing in a console fan.
Also, read the system operations manual! It came with the system for a reason. It tells you what to do and what not to do (including what I said above) to your system.

5- Never encountered a save game bug, neither have the 20 people on my friendlist who have h3.

6- Reviews affect the gameplay of h3 how? oh wait they don't its just words like what i'm typing now. If it was 1/10 or 10/10 the game plays the same.

7- Ill give you that one, good job the 360 has an upscaler built in however.

Happsai I'll wish you luck with you 360 as I just received my 4 replacement and I can assure I took care of the damn system.
One more tip that I've heard about is if your console is laying flat (horizontal), then put a dvd case underneath it to raise it. Don't cover any of the vent holes on the bottom! This half-inch of levitation allows more air ventilation. I tried this and I noticed that it really decreased the temperature of the air coming out from the fan and the console surface in general.
It shouldn't have to come to this just to prevent disaster, but maybe this helps with heating problems.

EDIT: Regarding your inquery to what issues Sony has had in the past, I would like to point at the PSP's dead pixels issue, and sensitivity to brickage. Also, PS2's horribly weak laser (dies if you play DVDs which was advertised as a working function), and the PS1 for having shoddy memory cards that delete and systems that just stop working (might work again if you flip it upside down). Sony's history has cost me a lot of money in repair work, and unlike microsoft, they offered NO free repair/replacements.

I absolutely agree. The target audience is not intended to be adept at heat or technology management.
I can't defend shoddy parts to make a shakey system. I point the finger at Sony's PSP and PS1/PS2 as well as X360 on that one.
All I can do is offer my own advice for minimizing the probability of failure, and believe me, a lot of people don't take the basic precautions (not that they should ever have to in the first place).

Having said that, I am very impressed by the PS3's stability. Sony's past consoles were pretty shaky (I've had bad history). Good for Sony!:D

If your disc doesn't work, clean it, repair it, or stop using hacked firmware.
If you don't want to get RROD then don't put your console on the carpet (which is probably the biggest cause), and don't stack stuff on top of the console (game cases, etc.). If you play for extensive amounts of time, consider investing in a console fan.
Also, read the system operations manual! It came with the system for a reason. It tells you what to do and what not to do (including what I said above) to your system.

True, MS made a sensitive product, but so much of this crap could be prevented if only people knew how to read directions.

I did not find much about RLOD in both mentioned threads, it's just the DISC ERROR which possibly results from a batch of badly pressed discs or something similiar.
People don't have any problems with other games, just Halo 3.

I think you have it all right most of the time its user error that kills the 360. But people will just not post that they had it in a cab on top of the receiver not getting any air :) Any way i got my 2ed 360 5 months ago and its playing great. I think MS has fix the problem. But if you like to play games that take 2 min to load and only have 20 to choose from get a ps3 and stop post **** about the 360. :rolleyes:

EDIT: Regarding your inquery to what issues Sony has had in the past, I would like to point at the PSP's dead pixels issue, and sensitivity to brickage. Also, PS2's horribly weak laser (dies if you play DVDs which was advertised as a working function), and the PS1 for having shoddy memory cards that delete and systems that just stop working (might work again if you flip it upside down). Sony's history has cost me a lot of money in repair work, and unlike microsoft, they offered NO free repair/replacements.

The only problem I ever had with my PS1 was the memory card issue (I finally threw out that memory card and bought a new one at the time, I think Sony had a bad batch)

My first PS2 I had to return to the store right away as it would not read any sort of DVD based media, including DVD games lol

Edit:And no I did not mod my original PS2 in any way, since it was a launch system there was no mods for it.... (not like I have a FlipTop and Swapmagic or anything now...heheheh)

On the negative side they should have known about this issue before it ever left the factory and also when the problem first arose they should have been more aggressive in making sure it wouldn't happen in the future...

All that being said I think MS has done an OK job with the whole RROD thing, I still would not buy a 360 just yet (I fear the RROD lol) as soon as they get that under control and its just a bad memory I know my next console will be a 360, I really really gotta play Dead Rising....

You raise a good argument. Consoles throughout history have had their share of functional problems. I completely forgot about the NES drive problems lol. Had to do lots of blowing and cartridge nudging to get it to work, but I was always able to get it after a minute or so. The top slot version of the console fixed it, but that was late in its life. I never owned a 5200, but I heard the controller only lasted weeks with or without usage.

The difference between then and now is that there are online forums for people to post and vent these problems and raise awareness for others and the manufacturers. Product quality therefore becomes more imperative than ever!

And I will concur that MS's warantee offer is the biggest insurance policy to ever be put on a console directly from the manufacturer (all be it after the fact). I can't help but wonder however, if the reason that they have this warantee while still not fixing the problem from a design standpoint is at all like the Fight Club philosophy of recalls. I really don't know, but I can't help but wonder.:confused:

One more tip that I've heard about is if your console is laying flat (horizontal), then put a dvd case underneath it to raise it. Don't cover any of the vent holes on the bottom! This half-inch of levitation allows more air ventilation. I tried this and I noticed that it really decreased the temperature of the air coming out from the fan and the console surface in general.
It shouldn't have to come to this just to prevent disaster, but maybe this helps with heating problems.

You're very welcome. Just make sure you use just one dvd case and center it on the bottom of the x360 so it doesn't cover any of the tiny holes down there. It'll look like a bit of an eyesore, but it seems to cut down on the heat.

Its a design flaw by Microsoft, deal with it. A timebomb, I have seen it happened with new 2 weeks console, and my pal only boots it on weekends. 360 has nice games, but the rushed out design and poor QC kills the purpose.Now how do we supposed to finish the fight?:confused:

this is a 100% microshaft problem,

they chose to run the fans way under there rated speed.
the heat builds up, damages the soldering and RROD.

as a nice bonus, the heat rises off the heatsink, into the dvd drive and slowly kills the laser & damages disks sometimes.

they should have run the fans at 12v, i dont care how loud it is - it's a powerfull console.
you cant have it both ways - you generate that much heat then you need to get rid of it after.

also, it would have been a lot more reliable if they had simply added a dividing wall inside the plastic fan duct to seperate the 2 fans between the gfx & cpu heatsinks.
as it is, because air will take the path of least resistance most of the air is drawn across the right heatsink by *both* fans - well done microshaft you assholes!

all those billions and they couldnt even get a second hand SGI Octane off ebay for $100 and run some thermal modelling software on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10/10? I'd give it a 9.9/10 if not a 10/10, its almost a perfect game. It always bothers me when ppl think that you can't ever have a game rated perfectly. Movies get rated "2 thumbs up" which is perfect based on their scale, or 5 stars which is also perfect. Are all those movies "perfect" by your standards? No. I don't understand why ppl say the game is short, I finished it on normal in 10 hours, which is by no means short. 5 hours is short. A game doesn't have to be revolutionary or open a portal to another dimension to get a perfect score. All a 10/10 means is that everything it presents does so in a perfect manor. It's also a matter of opinion. I'm sure final fantasy 7 got some perfect scores but I can't stand final fantasy, I'd give it a 2/10 based on my tastes. People need to learn to let it go and accept the fact that halo is a good game. Oh no its ms, we have to hate them because everyone does!

Lucky you. If you do some digging around on the other forums you will see literally thousands of people having these problems with different editions of the game and during different parts of the game, various cutscenes or after specific actions. There are even people saying that it not only doesn't play cause of a disc read error, but that after they get the error, NO games work for them anymore. Sucks. Glad this didn't happen to me but this crap is almost unforgivable. Not only do I have to worry about my console dying on me for no apparent reason, but I have to worry about the games I buy dying on me too. Either that or they render my console uplayable altogether.

Anyone having these problems should digg this story so that M$ and Bungie are made aware and can start on some sort of work around or patch.

This happened to me, and it wasn't a result of overheating as I don't play my 360 for over 2 hours at a time so it doesn't melt.

Was on Halo on LIVE, and it froze and made a grinding noise, and then RRoD'd. If I leave it a few hours I can reboot my xbox and all is well for a few minutes, but now my xbox has started freezing on my game demos, and it was fine before Halo.

I told I lie before, I used to play Bioshock for hours on end and never had any problems. I also thought it was Halo 3 that broke my xbox.

Can this be fixed with a software update or should I send it in?

If your disc doesn't work, clean it, repair it, or stop using hacked firmware.
If you don't want to get RROD then don't put your console on the carpet (which is probably the biggest cause), and don't stack stuff on top of the console (game cases, etc.). If you play for extensive amounts of time, consider investing in a console fan.
Also, read the system operations manual! It came with the system for a reason. It tells you what to do and what not to do (including what I said above) to your system.

It's funny that this is happening because I notice this issue after the last patch Microsoft release right before Halo 3 came out. After that patch came out my BioShock started getting the stupid read errors. I didn't think much of it until it happened while I was playing Halo 3 and got it was well.

I think people should report if it's happening to other games as well because it could just be a coincidentally tied to Halo 3 when I could well be the dashboard patch they release just day earlier.

Firstly I OWN Forza 2 & have played it on the latest Ixtreme & it works PERFECT, the only reason it has not for you is because you are a DUMBASS and have tried playing an incorrect copy which does not include the security pacthes hence Ixtreme refuses to load it as that is built in so MS do not detect it.
Secondly about your comment on having the 360 on the Carpet, I changed nothing I just used your EXACT quote, so it's not my fault that you stuffed up in that response.

Firstly I OWN Forza 2 & have played it on the latest Ixtreme & it works PERFECT, the only reason it has not for you is because you are a DUMBASS and have tried playing an incorrect copy which does not include the security pacthes hence Ixtreme refuses to load it as that is built in so MS do not detect it.
Secondly about your comment on having the 360 on the Carpet, I changed nothing I just used your EXACT quote, so it's not my fault that you stuffed up in that response.

P.S. The link you have provided is not the document I was referring to, but I'll give you a freebie. On page 3 of the document, it clearly states not to put your console on any soft surface that may block ventilation. Did you ever noticed that carpet is a soft surface that flexes when you put weight on it? And it consists of fibers that are dangerous for any electronic device that vents from the bottom.

No sorry leet your wrong again, my 360 is still running fine with no problems, maybe I am lucky who knows, my ps3 is also fine & so is my Wii, the only thing I wished was there was some new decent games for me to play on my PS3 as at the moment all the good stuff is on the 360 & wii the PS3 has **** at the moment, which sux cause I paid a hell of a lot more for my PS3 the only good thing is I love my PS3 for my Blu-Ray fix :D

You're obviously not even reading my messages anymore. As I clearly stated twice I was not referring to the Setup Manual. All I'm saying is that this manual does mention soft surfaces, and we can use common sense from there. But even so, we're talking about the wrong document. I'm done arguing with you about this. You have made too many mistakes in misreading or not reading my posts at all. I'm wasting my time repeating myself.

As for the misreading of the firmware issue, let me put this in chronological order for you:

Its a good game, you can't change the graphics too much otherwise it wouldn't be Halo anymore, the specular lighting, HDR, and particle effects are much better than Halo 2.

Ok So its the biggest game of 2007 BUT:

1) Exept Water and some HDR graphic its Halo 2 in HD.

2) Game last 4 hours max if u are blind and impaied,and u need to visit some levels up to 3 times like running in circle.

3) Spend 80€ on the Limited Edition and u get a nice set of scratched cup holders.

4) Pay 60 € to play the game online the only rumored good thing bout the title and Live crashes almost an entire day.

5) Save your game and u risk it to start all it over again ?

6) Rely on reviews and u can see they received up to 800$ bribes for them, nobody of all the 10/10 online magazines rates even mentioned....

7) They advertise HD video content on the limited and legendary boxes 80/130€ and u ll find out its low res REMASTER HIGH QUALITY but always LOW RES .......

8) Advertised as 1080p even months before its launch and now we find out its 640p.

9) Halo 3: Finish the Fight, more like Finish the Console - mass Disc errors/RRoD reported.

I am havin fun with this,the hype lasted 2 days.We need just another mess or bug and we will do a Perfect 10 for REAL this time.

I followed this thread the past 2 days, first of all my 360 got those RRoD FROM Halo 3, would somebody have told me this before - I knew he would be joking.

Anyhow - I googled this subject quite intense for a fix and found a good explanation from ars technica link (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2006/6/16/4353) in which the RRoD problem gets pinned down to overheating.

I opened my 360 cleansed everything even my DVD drive, let the upper cover open - powered up - played for over 2 hrs - Halo 3 - no problem at all.

Next Steps:
Make the complete fix mentioned in the above linked article, sell this piece of crapp with my 360 blaster and some games on ebay and buy meself a PS3 60 GB (replace it with a 250).

I had this box for almost 1 year - brand new - I only play occasionally - I've seen enough games on this system, the graphics are poor - geometry intensive scenes are not played in full frames, the antialiasing is poor, etc.
I think the little more modern concept of the PS3 is safer for the future and I already know now games will have better antialiasing and more stable fps.
Its quieter and as far as you can tell by now - more stable.

Anyway - this RRoD episode really got me wondering - I rather start to buy games - I know I will play on a safe(r) system than having to fear my 'next' 360 will not stay stable.

btw: i think 'home' will kick ass - by the end of this fall season ps3 user base will grow more compared to the 360, latest in spring we should see a difference.

One point that i have been missing(DL's rule) is that you buy $60 games for your 360.some costing $160.and what will happen to all of those games when you get the RROD?send it to warranty,wait 5 weeks and then get a used 360 which breaks again.It's just like wasting money.

I don't want to open my 360 and play.If this was the proper way than they would have mentioned it in the "owners manual".

I bought skate on my ps3,knowing it scored 0.5 lower than the 360 version(burned already).but at least i know that i can play it for a week continuous and still play it the next week.... you get my point!
