Bungie Responds to Legendary Complaints, Cinematics ARE Remastered

Gamers who viewed the second bonus DVD included with the $129.99 Halo 3 legendary edition would have been no doubt disappointed. The box claims that all the cinematics from Halo 1 and 2 are on the disc completely remastered with high-res versions however this doesn't seem to be true. The cinematics look very poor and the colors washed out with many gamers complaining as a result. However Bungie has responded by stating that the cutscenes were remastered and are better than the originals and sent apologies to those who felt they are getting ripped off.


The Legendary set includes all cinematics from Halo 1 and 2. While the back of the Legendary box claims the movies are "completely remastered, hi-res versions," this doesn't appear to be the case. The cinematics are poorly compressed, with washed out colors and considerable artifacting. It wasn't long before irate fans who were expecting something better were on the Internet complaining.

Today, Bungie Writing Lead Frank O'Connor responded to the concerns:

"The cutscenes were remastered, the pop-in reduced and they were output as as high resolution TIFFs one frame at a time to improve the quality over the originals

They were not, contrary to popular internets remastered in "HD" and this was always advertised as a DVD disc, which obviously can't play HD content anyway.

Apologies to folks feeling ripped off, but the false advertising claims are well, false.

I hate Halo but TBH, I think the Legendary is a better deal. Think about it, it costs like a few $ for the Halo DVD and the packaging. The extra stuff and the helmet would make H3 more worth it in terms of value per $ lol.

this isn't unheardof for pricing for a lim edition. Diablo and War3 cost me a pretty penny for the collectors editions. one I remember being in the $120 range.

The helmet is awesome and quite good build quality. it's solid. it's sitting on my shelf above my monitor along with my various other figures. including the red lim edition Starcraft marine...

I'd have to agree though at the terrible quality of the "cinematics"... note, scripted in engine. not FMV cinematics. it's a piss-poor job. c'mon bungie. you could have at least included them as hd files on the dvd. I mean. the 360 plays HD WMV files. honestly.
they could have at the VERY LEAST re-rendered it with higher poly models. rather than just capturing to tiff files. it's not hard to do. just load the map and character models and run the scripts through 3dmax and boom. there you go. high-res rendered videos.

they're lucky the helm is so nice. the packaging is also top notch. anyone notice the outer cardboard "sleeve" has a door poster on the inside?.. sweet, but I can't bring myself to cutting it apart. :'(

did you notice cortana's eyes in the clouds....im cutting this ***** and hanging it asap.....i havent taken my helmet outta the box, just pulled the dvds and started playing yester-morning

havent even watched these "re-renedered" cut-scenes yet....but i did play the hog jumping up to level 32 and gave up lol

I'm sure a lot of people are thinking, "oh! this will appreciate in value" or "I'll sell it ten years from now on ebay for twice the price" :confused:

The hype was just used to sell a helmet, a game, and some DVD's at a high cost. In today's world "limited" edition doesn't always mean it appreciate in value over the next 20+ years. Everyone is a collector so as long as a lot of people have it, its not worth much. Maybe your grandkids will be able to sell it when they find it collecting dust in your attic .
