View Full Version : Bungie: Halo 3 graphics are not trying to be photo realistic, no one cares after play
A Bungie producer has hit back at criticisms of the Halo 3 graphics by commenting that the game is not trying to be incredibly photo realistic but it is vibrant, fun and accessible. He went onto say that at Bungie they think it is a beautiful game and those who complain about the graphics pick up the game and carry on playing it for four hours and that is the last time they ever talk bad on the graphics.
He said: "It's completely immersive. The art direction is immaculate. It's not trying to be incredibly photo realistic or painting this grimy world. It's vibrant and it's fun and it's accessible."
However, Joe Tung, multiplayer producer at Bungie Studios, was bullish in his response to those criticisms.
He told Pro-G: "Stuff like the water, stuff like our HDR (high dynamic range or next-gen lighting) model, I think that stuff is so beautiful and so subtle and over time I hope people will appreciate that stuff as much as we do right now.
"Something like the HDR is really beautiful but it creeps up on you over time while you're playing the game, the way the light behaves. Like I said we're really happy."
He added: "We think it's a beautiful game at Bungie. Folks who have complained about the graphics in the large part have said 'I don't like the way it looks' then they pick it up and they play it for half-an-hour and then four hours later they're still playing and that's the last time you hear them saying anything about the game."

it's true the lighting ..water effects are really nice but the terrain and texture are not that good
I like how the said the GFX weren't final in the Beta, stating they'll be improved and now the truth is out, it's apparently irrelevant. :D

i liked alien ressurection as well as many others on ps1.that was pretty bad in the graphics department but,it played an hell of a lot better than this,if i am not mistaken it came out in the last 10 years.also doom 3 on xbox was a great game, chronicles of riddik, tron killer app.
so noone cares, like they stuck some secret code in the game that runs and turns you to an halo bot?
the gameplay is bloody lame,so they can count me as 1 of those who thought it sucked and there are better games in the last 10 years in the fps department.
i played this for hours and i forgot it was halo.i was drifting off like i was on auto bot!
and over time?
they realy think i am gonna play this game over and over again.i got peeved at the multiplayer on xbox live i went out and bought warhawk.

Holy **** Saleem, you just can't let a Halo 3 story go by without branding the forum with some bullshit, half-witted response that nobody cares about.
YES, WE UNDERSTAND, you do not like the game.
I don't understand why you feel the need to do it, because the other 1.5 million gamers are satisfied. We know the game isn't about graphics, if anything should have been learned this year, it's that graphics don't make up an entire game (as we have seen by the success of the Wii). As for gameplay, it picks up where the last 2 left off but with major improvements. It's not meant to be revolutionary, it's meant to be fun. So I don't know where you thought it was "bloody lame" but you have not backed up your opinions with examples (and no, this is not an invitation to spew random unnecessary rants for the rest of the forums).

its really weird, some parts looks nice (not amazing) but then stuff like terrain and other scenes are like "ewwwww, didn't they make money on the first 2 games?" :)

i'd put two thumbs down for the gfx & comment. If they were aiming for this type of "game" then they should've developed for the Wii instead.

I know you like the game but I will help you out.
Fun: Multiplayer, co-op'ing with friends, theatre mode, forge, etc
Innovative: Theatre mode in collaboration with uploading it to Bungie/Your pc, and Forge on a console.

Another on ignore :o
Is kinda fun to deal with fanboys when they have a somewhat vaguely point, but, same RROD trolling nonsense? This is just blatantly stupid.
Moderators should know that one post of this idiotic kind will prevent 20 more debatable and intelligent arguments.

Ditto.
As for the graphics, it sounds to me like they did what they usually do: a really bad job at rendering humans (may favorite quote, forget where, was that they looked like "animated corpses"), and a really great job at rendering the environment.
I haven't played it. I'd like to play it, but I only know one person with a Xbox360, and it's mainly for his kids. However, I'm mostly looking for "new" types of games these days. Or "retro" type games (ideas that haven't been used in a while). FPS games do not rank high on my list of "must have" games...unless they are unique like Bioshock.

I played some Halo 3 last night at a mates house. What I don't understand is how can this game get 10/10 in reviews? It pretty looks and plays the same as the 2nd game. And people are saying it's a "next gen game". No it's not. It's on a next gen console but looks marginally better (HD) than it's previous installment. Granted I was never a huge fan of FPS, but still, after playing through the first 2 I expected more.

The graphics in Halo 3 isn't bad as it's rendered in 1080p and at 60fps plus the fact that the environments are bigger than any other FPS on the box currently so there's nothing that you can compare it to yet.... Maybe Haze but Haze currently looks worst in my opinion. Halo 3 one of the best lighting systems out there. When you're going on the bridge it's absolutely stunning.... Once again there is no bar for 1080p graphics yet so there is no comparison even though I would prefer it to be 720p with better effects....

Why do they even try having good graphics? Consoles simply can't handle them. PC FTW.

Well I don't care much for the game, actually if they give me a free copy I would put it on ebay the next day, but I agree with the statement. If the game is good, and you find it enjoyable you won't care about the graphics. I play a lot of SNES games and I have no problem with the graphics, but that's because I have so much fun with them.

Bungie: "Blah Blah Blah, this is why we didnt make any real effort because all halo 3 is Halo 2.5 online expansion pak"
Why was the 360 necessary again? Nothing this gen has really impressed me besides games on the wii. All bungie is saying is the 360 is a ps3destroyer box, not made as an effort to surpass previous efforts.
Well, dont expect Halo 4 to have any better graphics. Looks like Bungie is riding the wave of the sheeple, and reaping the profits. Not actually trying to devalop good games anymore. Go to hell Bungie.

I kinda thought similar until I went back to the second one since playing Halo 3. Halo 2 looks absolutely rubbish in comparison.
Take a look - I think people are remembering a game that isn't nearly as pretty as they think.
