View Full Version : Popular Mechanics top five Halo 3 gripes

Erik Sofge has published Popular Mechanics top five gripes with Halo 3 as follows; 1) No co-op missions 2) Getting lost 3) Indestructible glass 4) Cortana and 5) The Finale. Anything else out that might bug you about Halo 3 or perhaps you disagree with some of the points raised by Popular Mechanics?

1. No Co-operative Missions

While Halo 3 allows you to fight through the campaign with up to three other players, once you’ve beat the game, that’s it. Games like Ghost Recon revolutionized multiplayer by letting up to eight players—whether perfect strangers or old friends—take on additional, self-contained missions against an array of computer-controlled hostiles. These co-op games aren’t tournament matches with a bunch of bots thrown in to mix things up, but squad-level skirmishes with an organized opposing force. And anyone who’s tired of getting killed by the same anonymous 13-year-old from the same camped-out position knows that human-on-human killing sprees shouldn’t be the only option.

I was playing with my bro just this weekend and we were haulin through the whole campaign.apparently the campaign missions don't count, but GRAW2 style co-op missions do... which is strange considering IIRC, GRAW2 doesn't allow you to play the campaign mode in co-op, so that's the only way to play co-op in GRAW2...

hey, and the 'unbreakable glass' the guy is talking about are the energy shields/bubble shield!

the entire point of that stuff is more strategy!

I've been playing through the campaign via co-op LAN and achievements have beena awarded. Havent hooked it up online in the co-op mode so I can confirm that one.

No Co-Op missons? Who Cares? You can play any of the Solo mode missions in Co-op up to 4 people and thats 100000 times more fun the GRAW "no meaning" co-op missions.

2 Player Co-Op over Live on legendary is the best co-op thing i ever exp.

1. Except that it does allow for Campaign Co-op...
2. I do agree with the getting lost, but I do appreciate that if you are lost for an extended amount of time, it points you in the right direction.
3. So what's the other option besides indestructible glass? Walls... which yo can't see through. Most of the glass is destructible, but you do come across a couple that don't budge. This is taking place in the year 2550 (or somewhere close) I'm sure we might have very strong glass by then, maybe :D
4. Just so I don't post any spoilers, they could have done something to introduce Cortana a little better/earlier.
5. No comment...

dude, i mean they "don't count" according to the guy at popular mechanics.

he dismisses the campaign co-op as "not counting" while extolling the virtues of GRAW2's seperate co-op missions.

A-MEN!

Its about time some reviewers got their heads out of their fanboy asses and reviewed this game for what it is.. halo 1+2 in HD.. nothing more.

I beat this game in like 8 hours or so [in one day in one sitting] and i was less than impressed. I could care less about multiplayer [im rare i know] so the singelplayer game was worthless.

I haven't played it, but if Cortana is voiced by the same annoying actress as the first two, then I continue to hate that character. Having a 15-year old girl attitude as your grim sci-fi epic AI personality is just lame.

1) AI driving is retarded.

i'm not a halo fan, but i had to respond to this,
what the hell does "popular mechanics" know about gaming?

this is like some playstation/xbox fan mag posting about the merits of a suspension bridge!

also, popular mechanics posted that the world trade towers came down because burning jet fuel melted the steel.
now politics aside (something they cant do it seems)

jet fuel burns at less than half the temperature of the melting point of steel and the steel was encased in concrete anyway.
if burning jet fuel could melt steel then it would melt the engines it runs in.

so this magazine is just full of bs these days.

1) Full of jaggies
2) Polygon count sucked for faces
2) Cortona aways stopping the action for her stupid ghostly speech
3) Not enough earth missions - again!
4) Ending sucked
5) AI Driving and Gunning sucks. Trying playing with legendary mode and you rather just kill your ai team mate, because he will get you killed.
6) Brutes don't seem that much smarter.
7) Not enough levels for single player - this goes back to #3

The polygon and jaggies problem really destroys the graphics. Maybe with Halo4 Bungie will use a better game engine.

well alot of these reviewers are paid by microsoft, the whole g4tv show (5+ hrs) was a PR paid time slot by microsoft, even stated that too.

yes popular mechanics does see flaws, but every game has them. The problem is the PR and over-hype of the halo3 and giving it a 10/10 or 9.8/10 makes people really wonder, is this the best game ever, is it for real. It did what the trilogy was suppose to and that was to finish the fight then go into sleep mode.
done.

so its true then the last battle has to be played out the same way all the time? like going thru dragon's lair (go left only or you get killed, then go right) style of finish?

was it earth shattering graphically? no not really. it was good. or is good.
audio was nice.
AI remember AI are programmed by humans, and we have our faults.
I don't think there is a DMV in the future (thank god), best you do the driving.

i stilll see bioshock, Gears of War and (now mass effect) showing off what the xbox360 can do better than halo3. and when COD4 comes out soon, you will see alot of people switch to that for online play. i am still having a ball with warhawk and playing 32 player games.

Yes, i wonder if more levels were planned just that they ran out of the dvd9 space. so more $DLC$ to come.

but if you believe all (paid) review sites, JUMP IN since halo3 is the best game ever, even thou they said bioshock was the best game ever. just remember to roll once you JUMP OUT the PR band-wagon of Halo3.

BTW: i watched the whole G4TV 5.5 hrs of halo3 PR (paid programming from microsoft halo3 bungie). and the whole thing about cutting off a street in new york city and making such a big deal, hello, or should i say HALO, its NYC, do they film shows/movies all the time there, and it was late night not during day. its a permit you request. duh. but the hummer was just gay. they should of actually had a troop of soldiers walking up the street with backpacks that had the wares, that would of been better.

I've never seen a game that doesn't have "jaggies".

And maybe some of you are playing a different game than me, but I never saw any fog or massive pop-up when I played through.

Thank god there were no GRAW type co-op missions, GRAW2 co-op missions had overly simplified controls from the single player game in tedious small maps, so much so myself and my mates stopped playing it and went back to Rainbow6 - Las Vegas. Now if it was Rainbow 6 type co-op fair enough, but I don't think anyone expected to get that anyway.
